Today I want to talk about "living da dream" and the "follies of youth," and also touch on the hazards of shipping instruments. But first off, lunch, when I finally come up for air at work, will be a marinated portabello mushroom on dutch crunch (scooped of course to keep the innards in the sandwich) with red leaf lettuce, home made pickles and roasted german butterball potatoes.
Many of us wanted to be rock or pop stars or at the very least, make a living playing music. For most of us music is an avocation and not how we make our daily bread. I gave it a good shot though by starting out working in a recording studio to managing and producing a number of bands and records. The biggest heartbreak being a major producer wanting to pick up the band I was managing only to have them implode just before signing. After that I vowed never again to work with anyone where band members were involved with each other. I also spent a lot of $$$ recording and putting out my own records but like many, still have a few boxes of these sitting in the closet. These days the cost of entry is much lower and digital access has totally changed the game, but that wasn't even on the radar back when the $$$ were only flowing one way. Still, I don't regret a moment of it and if never really successful, it was a great ride and the single my pal and I put out got a "Singles Pick" in Billboard (when Billboard mattered and 7" vinyl was still relevant). We followed the 7" up with an EP that cost even more money including 3k spent on the cover alone. Talk about the follies of youth and what I could do with that dough now.
Day After Day

Question 1: Any follies of youth you'd like to relay?
Shipping Instruments and Amps or package, package, who has the package?
I touched on the fact that BB#1 had a mishap in shipping during its life and needed to be repaired. Over the years I've been pretty lucky and have only lost 3 instruments and 3 or 4 others damaged. The two things I learned are NEVER ship during the holidays since the seasonal help will often rip off anything they can, and for the most part insurance is useless. It was different before the shipping companies went to outside auditors but once they review your case, your packaging, and every other detail, they MAY offer to settle. IF, you give up the instrument. Which leads me to this story. I saw a really sweet looking, mint-condition, Leo-era ASAT on Ebay and hit the BIN. Was really looking forward to getting this guitar as the guy said it was basically unplayed and weighed under 7 1/2 lbs which is super light for an 80's ASAT. The great day arrives and on my porch is the box. But something doesn't look right. The box is wrapped in a plastic bag and soaked with what smells like perfumed oil. The guitar was half out of the case and all told things were a mess. USPS said they would honor the insurance but it meant giving up the guitar so after a lot of back and forth the seller gave me a 3/4 refund and I kept the instrument. It also seems as if it wasn't in quite mint condition either as someone did a nice job on the input jack and tried to remove it without the right tool. In any case "enjoy" the pics.
Question 2: What if any shipping horror's have you experienced?
G&L Question - Desert Island Guitars (with electricity)
Ok, I know this is lame as everyone does the desert island thing but considering there are lots of new folks around I thought it would be fun to find out what G&L (either one you own or want to own) would be your pick. For me it's an easy one. And no, as much as I love BB#1 my pick would be either my beat to crap Cavalier or SC1. Both of which are lively, resonant, light on the shoulder and sound great.
Question 3: What's your desert island pick?
The "Is Don, Is Good" spot that Jamie posted the other day was great and reminded me how much I like commercials when they're done well. I can remember a lot of great tag lines like "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" or "Where's The Beef?" and with Youtube finding these are a whole lot easier. One of my more recent favorites are the Malibu Rum spots and especially the one with the line "I just want to buy a melon." Which btw, is a very fitting statement and scenario for many things in life these days. I'll be posting some favorites over the next couple of days and hope you enjoy them. Will try and reply as best I can since I'm still in fire-drill mode at work, and thanks again for checking in.

Man you have some good stuff for lunch.
I have never shipped a guitar or bass or had one shipped to me, so I have no horror stories to relate to you.
I have bought All of my instruments in person so I have no one to blame but myself if I get taken. LOL
I hope you fixed that ASAT. It looks like a bit of compound and a new jack would've fixed up that guitar to where a 3/4 refund would make it a sweet deal. How bad was the case damaged?
I like the RUM commercials.

the "mottling" is so deep into the finish that it would need to be stripped. whatever that "oil" was it was nasty. the jack is only part of it. other abuses were heaped upon it as well though not sure if by the owner or who messed with it in transit? the case was ok but totally drenched so i had to finally toss it after multiple airings and cleanings. it sucks when nice stuff is ruined and could have been avoided. and since you enjoyed that MR spot here is the follow up called "Traffic Jam" with the famous lines "my fish is sick" and "oh man, it's total gridlock."

I've been lucky with everything I've had shipped to me and with everything I've shipped to other people. That's probably 10 transactions. I have a lot of faith in the post office and have never had cause to complain. However, I live in fear that something will get broken one day and I'll be left without any compensation.
Those Malibu ads are great, shame Malibu is so horible. I got really sick on that stuff when I was 18 and I haven't touched it since. What is the ad with "I can't believe I ate the whole thing"? That's a fantastic one!
Desert Island: My SHBB, my Supro amp and, if I may, a tremolo pedal.
I'm yet to work out how you Americans get mushrooms to stay in your sandwiches/burgers. Pictures?

I'm enjoying these Lunch Reports immensely. I'm too busy to add much, but I want to say that the Enemies in the Grass song is awesome. I'd like to hear some more. I remember that you posted a different song that you played on some time ago, and I really liked that too. A girl was singing.

Here's a nice little primer on scooping your roll so the innards stay in:
http://www.subwayscoopit.com/
Malibu Rum does suck. But they have funny ads. Although some of the funniest, though not intentionally, and actually rather sad, are the Paul Masson wine commercials with a majorly rotund and aging Orson Wells spouting the famous line "We will sell no wine before it's time."
"I can't believe I ate the whole thing" was Alka Seltzer's tag line for years:

I'll try and rustle up some more tracks. The track with the gal singing was my last band. I'll see what else I have there too if you're interested.

Hey, don't knock Malibu Rum. I've gotten it to stay down. Twice.
No shipping horrors to report, thankfully. I do have a couple of instances (my Hamer P-90 Special comes to mind) where the packing was so gawd-awful that it's a miracle that nothing bad happened. The box was too short for the guitar case by about four inches. A couple of pieces of tape was seen as sufficient by seller to overcome this minor inconvenience.
Look forward to listening to the tracks later. I have bedtime duties looming in a moment....
Do think of me if you ever have some talented musicians around who only require a good song to make something happen. Never know.
Foibles of youth: About 25 years ago, I started a Delaware corporation which I planned to use to publish original music. Every year, I pay the franchise tax and the resident agent fee, but I've yet to do anything with the damn thing. This has cost me tens of thousands of dollars probably, but ending the company's life to me would be akin to forsaking my lifelong dream. So I continue to pay up while I strum alone in my basement. Boo hoo! - ed

Jon, that sounds like a good sandwich!! Blarg, you have to slice the mushrooms before you put them on the sandwich!!!
Jon I'm sure we all had visions when we were young. In 1965 it was decision time. we had a chance to go on tour. We were all married and we all agreed that it was time to pursue careers. In retrospect, it was probably a good choice. But you have experienced it which many have not and still dream about. Our lead singer has never gotten over it. He is a retired teacher and still has visions of being a rock & roll star although he knows better. The rush of a gig is his life.
I like your song today. it is well done. Were you influenced by the Byrds? It has that Hillman and bunch sound. Great stuff and keep it coming. It is so good to hear music instead of distortion and grind!
Sad situation on the guitar you had shipped. It was not pristine as the guy claimed when he shipped it. At least you came to some sort of settlement with him. I have had several guitars shipped and never had an issue. I will not ship one in the winter months in Minnesota due to the cold. I must be fortunate as I have bought over 70 items on e-bay and never been burned. That is luck and it will happen sooner or later. I try to screen the seller as much as possible. Again, I have been lucky.
The rum commercials are fun. I do like Malibu with orange juice. I seldom do hard stuff and am a sucker for good beers. Philby has me figured out, the young whipper snapper!
If I were on an island I would probably want my ASAT Special. I would like a 3 day notice so I could install a Bigsby before I was stranded. I would also take my Vox Tonelab and a good set of headphones. Listening to the output of the Tonelab is something. If only an amp would sound like that. Now, I would like a good supply of fine beers and probably Ginny on an island next to me within a very short swimming distance. She would get sick of me listening to the headphones and playing the same songs over and over. I wouldn't mind having one of my Gretches for backup. How many options do I have?????-- Darwin

Hi Jon
Late reply ... combination of the timezone thing and that I can't open mp3 files at the office.
That was a great track and I'll echo El Fugs recollection of the tune you posted in one of my LRs a few weeks back (I still think that track would have been at home on Sarah Blasko's "What the Sea Wants ..." album). Great work on the record covers too.
My Desert Island Guitar ... would probably be an accoustic rather than electric. Probably go with the Cole Clark 12 String. Dual benefit of fuller sound and changing strings would fill more time when Island boredom sets in.
Ads with tags. This one created one of Australias most overworked catch cries. Still hear people using it even now ...

cheers, Robbie

Just had a listen to Day after Day, jonc. I like the production a lot.
Before I tell you what I think of the song however, I need to know whether or not you wrote it ;+) - ed

Robbie, that's a riot. Thanks for posting. Haven't seen a Cole Clark acoustic but I've played his Culprit and I have to tell you it's one very sweet guitar. Might have to spend more time with one in the near future.
Ed: yeah, i wrote it but was overruled on the chorus part. which is why the phrase just keeps repeating. my pal, who is singing, just couldn't get the words right, or maybe he just didn't have it "under his hat" to put the chorus across. In general the lyrics are very 60's typical and as always, there were things i would have done differently. especially if i had been singing on it. feel free to shred it to pieces.
