Lunch Report for Tuesday, August 9th 2011
O.k. I hate computers or this website or both. I have written to good lunch reports today, submitted them only to have them vanish into nothing. I reponded to everyones post from yesterday twice and I am not doing it again.
Getting that out of my system helps a little.
I don't use a computor for work. We use loud machines, scrapers, sandpaper, stain and finish. Thats it and nothing vanishes into thin air. I would go crazier than I am if I had to use one of thes things everyday.
Your posts were very uplifting yesterday. Its good to know that George and Leo's original guitars have not been forgotten. As far as missing guitars due to lack of funds, just remember I have more guitars than all of you combined and never paid outright for one. I put money down and payed them off one at a time. O.K. sometimes two at atime.
Favorite finds of mine include:
1. sc-2 in the middle of Illinois. Waked into a small town store that had nothing at all. Owner asked me what I was looking for, told him G&L, He tells me he has 5 at home. Mint sc2 flamed neck $300.00
2. Hardtail cav, no pickguard. A guy with a music store calls me with this guitar. He has had it since new in the case. One of the lightest guitars I have felt. Dead mint. $700.00
3. Hardtail sc3. Got this in Wisconsin at GOOd AND LOUD MUSIC for $240.00. My son learned how to play on that guitar.
4. Mint maple neck comanchi and an ash f-100 hardtail. The owner told me that they would only sell them as a pair. $1000.00
5. Broadcaster. Drove to Indiana. The farmer pulled the guitar out from under his bed and the guitar still had the plastic on the pickguard $1100.00
6. All the guitars I got from Milt Smith in Portland Micigan, thanks Milt.
These deals will be back around as the economy forces people to sell their keep sakes. It sucks but its true. Strike a deal, give them a down payment and pay it off.
Discloser: My meds have been adjusted and the need for more G&L's has deminished. Before seaking out and buying pre-bbe guitars please consult with a mental health professional.
G&L question: What vintage feature do you miss the most from todays cnc made guitars? For me it is the micro tilt neck adjustment. That thing is awesome.
Beer question: I am 53 years old and have just now started drinking. Oh yeah I was a kid of the 60's and seventies but somehow never drank alcohol. What is your favorite beverage?
Outa here, my two black cats, George and Gracie have something screaming outside so I must go extract a rabbit or chipmunk from their jaws. Damn radio named cats!

Re: Lunch Report for Tuesday, August 9th 2011
Micro-tilt is amazing. I am very curious what year my favorite f-100 is, but refuse to take off the neck because it so perfect, and hasn't moved at all since I dug it out from under the bed and started playing seriously again 10 years ago. I don't play really low action on my newer guitars, but The feel of that f-100 is still my favorite over all.
Favorite beverage? Unfortunately, I love them all...If I could only have 1 vice the rest of my life it would probably be red wine. But I love my single malt scot's whisky, I have had over 200, and my favorite that is even moderately accessible is the very common Macallans. Beer? I am not really a Connoisseur, and there are thousands of really good ones. But here are my favorites that have stomped the test of time: Guinness, Bass (Hey, i think it's better than Harps), Pilsner Urquel, Coors Banquet Beer, Budweiser Lager, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and Full Sail Amber Ale. When I go to a micro-brewery you'll find me headed straight for the hops....
I wouldn't mind seeing some of that pre-BBE stuff...or some floors for that matter!
edit: removed some nonsense....hopefully most of the nonsense.

Re: Lunch Report for Tuesday, August 9th 2011
I don't go looking for Leo-era G&L instruments, but if I run into one I'll be interested. I picked up my 1990 SC-3 exactly that way as it was advertised in my local Craigslist a couple of years ago. I went and checked it out and bought it. I don't have any personal experience with other Leo-era guitars, but this one is a very nice playing and sounding guitar.
My 1976 Fender Stratocaster and the SC-3 have micro-tilt on them, but I never needed to use the feature. On the other hand I had a couple of other guitars that could have used a micro-tilt adjust but didn't have it. I ended up shimming the neck in both cases and that worked great too.
I never like drinking alcohol and never picked up the habit. My favorite drinks are hot tea with cream and sugar, and Coca Cola.
I did not get around to responding to the LR yesterday, but I do have a wood floor story. 7 years ago we bought and moved into a new house. A portion of the house has a white oak floor. About 6 months after we moved in we noticed that a good portion of the wood floor boards were warping. The way they warp is really strange: Normally you'd think the edges will warp up, but in this case the middle of the boards were bowing up along the length of the boards. Eventually the builder came to look at it and agreed that it was a problem. Even then he dawdled for almost a year. What finally happened was that we were going on vacation, so I notified the builder telling him that this would be a good week to fix the floor, otherwise if he wants to fix it while we are in town he would have to pay our hotel bill while they re-sand and re-stain. That finally got him into action and the floor got fixed. It has been OK since. But even now neither the builder nor I know what cause the boards to warp the way they did.

Never had a pre cnc guitar so no comment.
As far as booze goes, I'm 54 and I think I hate Gin. Otherwise we are good to go, flavored vodka, vodka, rum/brandy/cognac, rye/scotch not so much except when my scottish brother in law is in town, wine, especially nice bold reds, beer (but love wheat, micro brewed pints), blue moon is ok in a pinch, lol. All of it is good, I say. My Dr., not so much!

Re: Lunch Report for Tuesday, August 9th 2011
y2kc, I have had this happen but usually I am able to recover by using the back button. I am still upset with computers at times but they are a way of life for many of us.
There are some of my G&Ls that I wish I had a microtilt on, and I shimmed them which usually takes more than one try. With the microtilt is is a simple adjustment and you are done. It looks like you have some pretty cool G&Ls. I don't have any pre BBE but the most recent builds seem to be the best ever. The one I picked up yesterday was the best I have had and it was built about 3 weeks ago.
I do have favorite beers. Due to health reasons I generally drink light beer which is kind of a waste. Sometimes I splurge and drink the good stuff. I am also a lover of microbrews, generally the amber or darker ones. I do really like Grain Belt Nordeast, a local beer, and generally have that when Ginny and I go to BIg Louies on Friday nights.
I like how you have bought you guitars. Being a retired guy I have some time. Yesterday I got in trouble hanging in the guitar shop but there is a method to my madness, even if it seems feeble and lame. I drive a 93 Olds 98 in very nice condition. It needed front brakes so this morning I replaced the front pads and had the rotors resurfaced. It took me a little over an hour for the job and I saved a hundred bucks. That is a hundred bucks toward a guitar. So when I am driving down the highway in my Olds, I am chalking up funds to procure a guitar. Twisted logic, but it works. Sounds like you have always had a bullet proof plan. Unlike you I haven't reached the point where I am no longer looking but I have been trying to slow the pace. Frankly, that hasn't worked either so far this year. But life would be dull if a person had reached all there goals with nothing left!--- Darwin

Micro-tilt and old-style serial # on the back plate. I have to agree with Darwin that from a build and finish perspective the guitars and basses coming out of the factory are second to none and have a much more polished look than the Leo-era instruments. That said, while I like many BBE-era instruments and still kick myself for trading in my Trinity, my favorites are the Leo-era ones like this. As for drinkables -- any beer that is on the dark side.

Same here, the micro tilt neck adjustment. Big fan of it. And hence, 3-bolt necks are just fine and dandy too. Second would be the Bi-Cut Bird's Eye Maple neck. Love those too.y2kc wrote:G&L question: What vintage feature do you miss the most from todays cnc made guitars?

Re: Lunch Report for Tuesday, August 9th 2011
First, a response for yesterday, I have also played or owned almost every Leo era G&L there is but there is one that has eluded my grasp, which brings me to todays response.................................I'l give you a dollor down and a dollor a week for that flamed maple X body Interceptor.
I don't do the new G&L thing so I guess there's nothing I'm missing. I've tried a few but they didn't last long. I do still own some early BBE guitars, pre 97 so I'm not missing the micro tilt on those.
I'm pretty busy and don't have much time to screw around on the computer so losing a long post or e-mail just sucks!
Oh wait, there is one other Leo oddity that I haven't had yet and that would be an early commanche, if you got one of those I'm sure I could pay off two at a time, if you do me the double deal I'll up the anti to a hundred down and a hundred a month.
I drink only beer and I'm not a beer snob, just give me a cold Bud and I'm happy

Re: Lunch Report for Tuesday, August 9th 2011
After yesterdays report I pulled out my pre-BBE ASAT. That thing is sweet. I haven't needed to use the micro-tilt on it but I'm glad it's there. I'd love to see the metal string ferrule block come back. I've replaced the plastic ones in my modern ones with aluminium ones and there is a noticeable improvement. Surely it can't cost much more to make them out of metal.
I'd choose wine if I could only drink one thing. There's so much variety there, from sparkling wine to sherry (I'm really into dry fino sherry at the moment). I do love a beer too and generally stick to them when I'm out because when you spill wine on your shirt it's much more visible. Favourite beer is Cricketers Arms, a local lager which has becoming increasingly hard to find now that my local bottle shop (liquor store) shut down with no notice. It was literally there on Friday and gone by Sunday - completely gutted, not a poster left.

Re: Lunch Report for Tuesday, August 9th 2011
While I know little of the BBE era, the one thing I miss about the pre-CNC era is the truly custom nature of each instrument. The hand-finishing meant variations between one guitar and another and that worked in my favour when I got my Legacy as the neck felt like it fit in the palm of my hand. I'm an old-fashioned guy and I really like the fact that no two instruments are exactly the same. With respect to alcohol, I love a good porter, stout or other hearty beer, and I do have a fondness for good Bordeaux, which can be picked up for a song when I visit Montreal.
With respect to making payments on a guitar, I did that on my first instrument, a crappy classical guitar that I bought from the music store around the corner in my teens. Every other guitar has been cash on the barrelhead and, other than that first $150 guitar and my Legacy, all my other instruments cost $100 or less.

I've had my LR disappear when I was on duty too, Y2KC. Try typing it out in a word processor e.g. MS Word, then cut and paste it into the board when it's good to go. If it disappears, you've still got the original in MS Word to cut and paste again. That's what I ended up doing.
My only USA G&L is a 1995 S-500 with a micro-tilt. I never tried (or seen) a new CNC instrument for comparison, so I can't really comment on the differences.
Beer is about the only alcoholic drink I can stomach, but there are some good ones out there, especially from the smaller brewers. I like lagers and wheat beers, but ales and stouts are perfect for cold winter nights. I'd like to be able to drink and hang out on the forum at the same time like Darwin does, but work is the only place I get time to check what's going on.
For general purpose, all round drinkability I like these.

Also, I'd like to aluminium saddles make a comeback. For extra twang.
Phil - If you ever feel the need to try out or look at a CNC made G&L let me know.

Micro tilt for me too.
I am a big fan of dark Ales, Camerons dark from a nearby micro brewery is a staple of mine, very similar in flavour to nut brown ales, which I tend to like a great deal.

Heya y2kc,
Nice week so far...
I lost a LR last year during my last stint as LR'er and it really sucks. If I remember correctly, this new version of the site times you out after a certain length of time so you lose your content. Once I suss'd that, I made it a point to copy and paste my content so not to have it happen again.
I prefer the fit/finish/feel of Leo-era GL's. Too many changes on the new ones imo. I dig the micro tilt/3-bolt neck feature as well as the nitro finishes that tend to yellow and wear over time. I think that's why some of the early G&L's are increasing in $ as 20+ years down the road they look & feel like vintage fenders...
Now that I'm in NZ, I drink a beer daily with dinner and really enjoy it. Find it helps the digestion. On a rare day I'll have two but generally just prefer the one. Fond of darker beers - Pilsner, Guinness etc... ocassionally lighter beers like Steinlager or Kingfisher. Hard Pear Cider is pretty Fab too.
Cheers,
Kf

Philby and Katefan got this right. I too learned the hard way to use Word to create posts of any consequence. No problems now. Also, links that you past into your word processing document work after you copy and paste them into your post.
I'm most sorry that you lost your replies to yesterday's responses. I enjoyed the day and was looking forward to your take. But onward...
What were the questions again?
Oh yeah. I really like cherry. Flooring.
I like beer and I don't drink wine (though I think I most certainly ultimately will if I am spared), but lately (and here go my job prospects), I like straight vodka. Chased with Gatorade. I am easily amused.
Regarding beer, if I still had any money after the past few weeks, it being summer, I'd probably order up a Stella Artois or a Pilner Urquell. When it's hot, I also appreciate Steinlager as well as a lot of blue collar stuff. When I lived in Baltimore, I lived on National Bohemian. When I was a teenager through my early twenties, Molson was truly a nectar of the gods. Once they became big, however, it was never even anywhere close to the same.
When it's cooler out, I like Guiness and to sip my way around the most interesting offerings of a high-quality, local brewery:
http://www.dogfish.com/brews-spirits/th ... /index.htm
But I digress. I seem to recall a G&L question. This is my final answer: Aluminum pick guards, though I also like the short-lived skunk striped neck on a couple of old models... - ed
