Lunch Report for Monday, August 8th 2011

Hey,

Sorry this is so late. My work day stretched out a little longer and well, here I am.

I run a small company that installs,finishes wood floors. We have been doing this since 1979 and today's floors were Brazilian Cherry. Myself and a craftman who has been with me for 25+ years sanded and stained a kitchen and livin groom floor by 2:30. It came out beautiful.
My final pass over it was with a 18 inch buffer with a 120 grit screen. We hand stained it with a clear penetrating sealer and got the hell out. The top coats are water based.

People say that when I start talking about work that I can't shut up.

I thank Ed for letting me do this all week. This is my third or forth time hosting the Lunch Report but am offically only a lurker. I am honored to be asked.

My name is Casey and go by y2kc here and down the dial at the Heritage Owners Club website. My wife and I have been collecting pre-bbe G&L's since 1991 and have more than our share. We have one off's, prototypes and even things like a lefty Marquis and lefty Broadcaster. We went for the cleanest and the one's you just didn't see every day. Having seen, played or owned just about every pre-bbe G&L there is, there are are a few that have eluded me.
G&L question: What new or old G&L has slipped through your hands or you just can't locate?

For me it is the Bluesboy. Our own Tim Page designed that with G&L. It's basically a copy of an old Fender design but done the G&L way. Quality work and first rate materials.
Ed has offered to send me his to try but I don't think I would give it back. Its beautiful.

O.K. tomorrow will be on time, I just have to coat those floors with sealer. We will talk buying guitars, beer and G&L.

Anyone tried a Sam Adams Imperial White?

Hey Casey,

There is a 30th Anniversary bluesboy calling to me at the local shop too.... Beautiful instrument but I should have my real prize shipping to me this week (finally) after an month build I am both excited and worried. I hope to get it before the weeks end, if it ships before Wednesday I should as the Luthier is 400 miles from me (and across a border). Can't say I condone collecting poor innocent guitars, but as long as each of them gets play time I digress. I am a firm believer that they are made to scream not to pose. While this doesn't stop me from owning some very beautiful specimens, they all get their stage time so to speak.

The floor sounds like a beautiful one.

I drooled over BB#1 (quilted top) on the BB site for months and kicked myself when it got sold. Cut to a few years later and the guitar not only had gone through a handful of guys but had also suffered some damage. When it came up for sale I jumped and it's now one of my prized possessions. There have definitely been some others like a back-loaded G-200 and a natural, flamed X body . I am lucky that I have a few nice Leo-era G&L's including a prototype ASAT with a MFD hummer in the bridge position, and an early Cav that has a warmer circuit than typically used, but I know there are many others I would love to have like one of those ASAT III's with the hummer in the bridge.

Welcome Casey, As you are a refinishing or finishing expert I can imagine what you could do for a guitar! Great career and it has to be fun at times but also hard work.

I missed a G&L last week that I should have jumped on but it had sold over the weekend. It was meant to be. I was AG&B today and my Bluesboy Bigsby had sold. Someone got a great guitar. I had a weak spell and I will cover that in another post. I would like to know more about the water based transparent paints. Are they good for gloss and they must be durable if you are using them on floors. How would they work as a guitar finish? Keep it coming Casey!!

Hi Casey. It must be great to have a partner who is also into G&L guitars - and I thought Darwin was lucky!

My Bluesboy is my favourite G&L I own and I can't speak highly enough about them. That Seth Lover pickup is simply amazing. I've come into a bit of money this last couple of weeks and have been watching out for a suitable G&L on ebay but alas nothing has come up and the Australian dollar is slowly losing some of the ground it made against the $US, making G&Ls utterly affordable. The few weeks before I had the cash in my hands I saw so many slip away at great prices it hurt.

I was serious about my offer to ship you the Bluesboy. I really love that thing (even without a Saddle-Lock bridge;+) and it would be worth it just to know that you were checking out my guitar. Anyway, the offer stands and always will - so long as I do.

No, she may not be as stunning as jonc's #1 (few if any guitars are), she is an excellent example of the breed and worthy of a good fondle (is there such a thing as a bad fondle? I think not!)



As to G&Ls that might have slipped through my hands - good question. When our good buddy Zombywoof lived in the area, I was over at his place playing some, swapping guitars and stories back and forth, he offered me the opportunity to purchase his '86 (maple-bodied) ASAT OR his '85 Broadcaster. I played them both through the modest '80's Champ that I brought, and my decision was easy. This particular ASAT just spoke to me, and I am now the proud and happy owner.





But looking back, I'm wondering if I couldn't have worked out a deal for both somehow. Owning a Broadcaster seems to me to be a thing of special honor - much like being nominated Lunch Reporter ;+)!!!

Never tried that Sam Adams you mentioned, but I like many of their brews, especially the Boston Ale. Twist my arm.... - ed

Great start to the week, Casey.

There are three G&Ls on my "buy without a second thought" list - an SC-1, a first-style SC-2, or a G-200 - assuming the price is not some eBay seller's fantasy. I haven't come across any of these when I've been in a position to buy, though. I was told by a Guitar Center clerk in Cincinnati last summer that I had just missed an original SC-2 (not a re-issue) that hung on the wall for several months and eventually sold for around $300. I think that is what inspired the collecting I've done over the past year.

I would be very inclined to go for a reasonably priced Cavalier or HG since they just don't come up that frequently, although I have the dual HB sound covered with a couple of other instruments.

It's interesting that you mentioned the prototype ASAT. I just found a copy of Band of Susans' Wired for Sound CD. The liner notes contain a picture of what appears to be an ASAT with a Tele-style pickguard and control plate and with a single pickup (like an SC-1). Is this what yours is like?

Imperial White is my favorite Sam Adams brew, but I would probably go with a Goose Island 312 or Flying Dog's In-Heat Wheat or Woody Creek White first. I was a big Sam Adams fan when I lived in New England, but they just didn't seem as good after I moved to Ohio. I think it might have been a regional difference in the recipe (that is, the ones brewed in Cincinnati seemed to have a much blander taste to me).

The lunch reports recently are really interesting. Ed, that double Bluesboy is hard to beat and the special is no slouch either. Jonc had a super pic and I forgot to mention that I do love Sam Adams and would swizzle a few when they first came out. Now I will have to try Imperial White but I am broke and I think that Ginny is going to keep me that way for a while. If I had some, I would sample a few tonight. Life is not easy but it sure is fun. Ladies, we are open for new members tonight. Sign up tonight and I bet there are some prizes if you check!! As a starter we could give away Blargs avatar! Southpaw is running out of room and has a bunch of sweet guitars, maybe one of those. Hi Casey,

Good to hear from you! There are plenty that have escaped me like water: a GbL LE, 2005 Butterscotch ASAT Classic 'S', and several pre-BBE ASAT's and G-200's. But then again, due to people like you, you find other (rare) models. So no complaining here.

That first series of Blues Boy models is special. Yes, there is nothing wrong with the production model and there are hardly any differences beyond the vintage fret wire used on the Buffalo Brother Blues Boy Limited Editions and the special faux-tweed case. I have the one built for Tim (#9); not as pretty as jon #1 but she sounds absolutely magnificent.

Ed, I just hung it on the wall and it is like a light. I may have plundered the Gray Goose but I am already on the way up. That is the nice thing about being on the bottom, you have no where to go but up. I think she is starting to like it but I may be delusional, not a bad state to be in sometimes. Late? This is my first chance to visit my favorite site and it's 11:00pm, so we all find time to come round. Great to see ya Casey great start.

The most painful G&L that got away was a ASAT Commemmorative that I just orderd and my newly married wife found out; SO I was quickly reminded we had just moved, had no money, I did not tell her about the purchase and I had just purchased a Signature ASAT Classic....cancel of order came next

Let's say she has come around. She supports and sometimes promotes G&L purchases. The ASAT Commemmorative is still elusive but one day...

I had a chance to buy an ASAT Commemorative for $750 and missed it. But I'm a Legacy-body guy. Missed a few of those, too.

I had a chance to buy a Broadcaster for $1400. It was certified by Gabe Dellavigne as a genuine Broadcaster. I just couldn't justify the expense at the time.
