G&L in the news

Post by guitar_ed »

Hi All,

Glen Campbell and G&L are in this article http://news.yahoo.com/campbell-shines-1 ... 41647.html. I kind of grew up listening to his music.

BTW: It's not widely known, but Glen did play with the Beach Boys for a brief period.

I didn't know that. You learn something everyday. Ed, I have to be honest. Your avatar scares the hell out of me. Sorry it makes me think you have a straight razor coming to give me a red smile. If I offend you I'm sorry, but I had to say it.

I recall Glen hosting Midnight Special in the late 70's and mentioning the Beach Boys gig. My parents caught a show of his in Vegas or Reno NV and came back with a lot of tidbits like he is such a great musician yet he does not read music. His version of Wichita Lineman is hauntingly beautiful. Few songs hit me with such nostalgia. I reserve playing it to once in a great while. I want to preserve the feelings it brings up even though it also reminds me of an unhappy period of my childhood. The lyrics also describe a lonely tale. It has gotten to the point where I value a song's ability to bring up feelings from long ago. I was a different person then. It is an interesting experience to feel the way I did from this perspective. There are a few songs that I am careful not to diminish associations by creating a new context in a different time period. There is this one song that we were playing a lot when I was visiting my sister and brother-in-law in San Diego during Easter break from high school. It was just before some life altering events. Those people are all gone now including who I was then. I really love the song but I do not play it all the way through.

Yeah, I believe Glen Campbell was with the Beach Boys for "Good Vibrations". GOD bless Glen Campbell.
