String Tree's
I have a G&L 1992 LEgacy that has graduated tuners. (Locking Spertz)
The guitar does not have the string tree's. Is that ok ? or should i have the string tree's on?
Guitar plays and sounds fine to my deaf ear lol but i was curious.
Also i had a 2006 or 07 G&L Legacy upgraded to the same graduated spertz locking tuners
and the guitar tech did not remove the string tree. (only one on the newer Legacy)
Can i take the string tree off and its ok? or should both guitars have string tree's put back on ?
The newer G&L Legacy only has one string tree
The older Legacy has 2 holes where the string tree's were

Re: String Tree's
Removing the string trees may not necessarily cause a problem but locking tuners do not change the string angle on a G&L. Leo's tuner design makes the string move to the lowest part of the tuner giving a higher string angle on the tuner side of the nut. Personally I would not remove the string tree. They are not installed on Fenders that have LSR nuts and I believe it would not be any different for a G&L. The fact that the older Legacy had a string tree (holes) I would say that it still needs it. Others may have a different opinion. The other Fender that doesn't have a string tree is the EJ model which has a different headstock angle. I have a Fender that has an added LSR nut and I still left the string tree as I didn't want the holes showing. The string tree normally will never cause an issue.-- Darwin

PS
i have the bridges blocked as i never use the whammy bar on all my G&L guitars. Does that make a difference when deciding what string trees to buy ?

Re: String Tree's
Blocking your trem has no effect on string trees. I recommend Graphtech string trees, just to help eliminate an friction that could occur. Not sure what Darwin means by 'Leos tuner design' though. I do not think graduated tuners are enough for the flat headstock of a G&L though.

That is my next axe a S-500. Just want to find and older one. I am a big fan of the older G&L's. The 3 Bolt Neck is bomb imho.

Re: String Tree's
Sirmy, if you look at the non locking G&L tuner (Schaller) you will notice a more pronounce taper from the top of the post to the bottom. This causes the string to quickly work to the bottom of the post as it is wound. Compare to a Fender tuner and the taper is much less. Fender also used Schaller for many years. I am almost certain that Leo designed this to keep the string close to the bottom of the shaft. One of the reasons that the strings should be wound properly.-- Darwin

Re: String Tree's
All G&L Legacy models (old or new) come with a single string tree. Perhaps aWaltb wrote: The newer G&L Legacy only has one string tree
The older Legacy has 2 holes where the string tree's were
-Walt
previous owner of the older Legacy relocated the original or added another
string tree.
Hope this helps.

Thats interesting. Obviously someone drilled a 2nd hole for another string tree. So i would be best to just add one string tree to the B and E strings then.
Thank you everyone for taking the time to help me out and make sure i do it right

Re: String Tree's
sorry, maybe I missed why, but why not put on 2 string trees, you can get a taller one for the middle hole?

I say that because my guitar teacher has a strat and it has 2 string trees on it, one higher than the other

Re: String Tree's
I guess i could just add two string tree's but as someone mentioned above the G&L originally did not come with 2 string trees and i want it to be like it was originally if i can. But just putting a 2nd tree on will prob be a lot easier then trying to cover up the hole.astutzmann wrote:I say that because my guitar teacher has a strat and it has 2 string trees on it, one higher than the other

FWIW (0-$.02)
Black string trees look better. The string tree should take a back seat to the headstock lettering and allow the hardware (especially chrome) to dominate.
