Looking For Input-Taylor Solid Body

Post by darwinohm »

The last three purchases have been G&L and I am looking to add something new. I have been looking at a Taylor Solid Body, double cut and have played it. The body and neck work is awesome. The frets looked glued on as you cannot see any evidence of them being set in the ebony fretboard neck. They are set in. The sustain is unbelievable unplugged. It has an unplugged sound very similar to my Gretsch's. Do any of you have any experience with these? They are large humbuckers. I have never owned a Taylor but these are very intriguing. The scale is similar to a Gibson and I can live with that. Anyway, let me know what you know about these. Ginny is borderline luke warm on this and I have a ways to go. I told here that the quilted maple top was the most beautiful I had ever seen. Her reply " I have heard that before". Thanks in advance.-- Darwin

I've also been interested in these - they're priced right and some of the hardware looks really cool. They seem to be as rare as G&Ls in these parts. I hope someone here owns one

I too have been intrigued by these Taylor solid bodies, as well as the Larrivee RS series solid bodies.

Keep us updated please Darwin!

Very, very well made instruments, as you would expect from Taylor. They miss the mark, though, at least for me.

I've heard dealers say they have a hard time moving them. And I know that in general, Taylor acoustics seem to not hold their value as well as some other brands like Martin and Collings. With that considered, I suspect that you may be able to find some very good deals on these instruments. It's a familiar story, ala G&L vis-a-vis Fender.

Good luck!

I have always been curious, but have never actually gotten my hands on one. They do 'option shop' orders like G&L now I gather, and they look really nice though.

The Taylor people demo'd these guitars at Fat Sound a few months ago. The were well made and sounded good, just couldn't find anything "special" in them that would make me purchase one of those over one of the other top brands. But, if you can get one for a reasonable price, you probably won't be disappointed.

This is something I've noticed with a lot of manufacturers. I've played a lot guitars in the last few months, trying to find one to buy (its a tough life...) and while they've all been very nice, none have left me with that 'got to have it' feeling. What's happening here? Has all the 'mojo' been used up?

Could it be we've become more critical or analytical in what we really want? I've got a handful of wonderful guitars and I'm hard pressed to find a new one that would do something better than what I already have. So, for me, when I play a new model guitar I am listening for something that isn't covered in the guitars that I have. And, when I find it, I ask myself how often do I need that sound? About the only thing lately that I have played that has the uniqueness and usability is The Grosh P-90 Electrajet. While I have a great sounding Hamer Newport 90, the Grosh P-90 is just different enough to warrant the purchase.

The Hamer and the my Grosh Retro Classic are my two main gigging guitars. I'll switch off the Hamer with either a PRS Archtop Jazz or my George Fullerton classic - ASAT Classic.

This is the deal with my carvin guitar (not the bass, the bass is fine). It plays effortlessly, but overall that is it, it doesn't have the special something I get from my G&L. It is nothing more than the sum of its parts (as I gutted it, and replaced a whole tonne of the parts :happy0007: to try and improve it, it worked), something needs to supercede that to have 'it', imo.
