Is this a G&L in this video?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Is this a G&L in this video?

Post by blargfromouterspace »

I was watching Dale Watson clips and came across this one. Looks very similar to the G&L headstock, but I'm unsure that it is one. Any thoughts?

Nope, it is likely a Tomkins Custom Guitars and Basses guitar made in Australia.

Dale has a link on his website to Tomkins Guitars.

Hope this helps.

I don't think it's a Tomkins. They have a very distinctive headstock and pickguard shape and I believe that Dale received his first Tomkins in '98, two years after this video was (probably) shot.

It's not a G&L as far as I can tell (zoomed in on some of the video shots).

You might ask him as he's on some of the social networking sites (myspace, facebook, twitter).

Keep us posted.

Yes it is.

The prototype ASAT classic pictured was given to Dale by Leo Fender, IIRC. Dale covered it with fabric and clear poly finish so it looks like a sparkle tele. You can clearly see the ASAT headstock in some shots as well as the string tree position near the nut dating it to 1989-1992. I believe there was a write up in Guitar Player some time in the late 90s regarding this.
Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.

Thanks for the info, yoeleven. I did a bit more digging and couldn't find any more info.
