Any pics of Light Tint Gloss?

Post by Parker Hinson »

This is my last decision before ordering a custom S-500 and I haven't seen any guitars with the light tint gloss. I'd really like to compare the light tint and the vintage tint before ordering so if anyone has the elusive light tint then please post pictures! Thanks in advance!!

I'm in the same position and I brought this up in another thread.

Here are two eBay auctions from the same dealer who claims both guitars have "lightly tinted gloss necks".

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

Unfortunately neither auction has adequate photos to show the neck color.
From what I can see in the photos, if these are actually light tint, they don't look much different than clear gloss.

Not yet. I've emailed a reminder to Dave.

Stay tuned.

yeah I used the search and saw your post Eddie but I don't think much was ever posted. And thanks Craig!

Also, I was wondering about the variance in the Vintage Tint. I have seen a ton of them using Google Images and some seem to be a rich golden color, almost orange, and then some that are a beautiful straight yellow. I have read that there was a change in formula or production at some point in time, is this the reason for the change in color variations? Or does the wide spectrum still exist?

See What is TGN? in the G&L Knowledgebase.

Hope this helps.

So would this be the before or after the switch to automated vintage finish?

Not sure what you mean by "automated" vintage finish since all neck tinting was/is done manually.
Any guitar built after 2008 which has a tinted neck is safe to assume that it was applied using the current method
of mixing the tint with the clear coat and then manually sprayed onto the neck. The 2011 Legacy in the picture has a
Vintage Tint neck.

Hope this helps.

I did find this on the G&L website, it shows Light Tint (rosewood fretboard so only the headstock shows the tint), Vintage Tint and Clear Satin finish,
but it does show the differences side by side: ASAT Classic. I am still hoping to get more pics from Dave.

Hope this helps.

Yeah I saw that on the website but it was hard to determine the diffence by just the headstock.
While we are waiting for the pictures from Dave, does anyone have any pictures of a quilted maple redburst guitar? Ihave seen the flamed maple top with the redburst finish and it looks sick but I haven't seen any quilted maple with the redburst. I have seen pics of the quilted maple top on other finishes so I'm specifically looking for the quilted redburst.

I received a comparison photo from John Toner and have post it in the
G&L Knowledgebase, General G&L Questions sub-forum: Comparison of Neck Finishes.

Hope this helps.

Thank you John and Craig! Perfect picture that's exactly what I needed!

Now here's a somewhat random question that I hope someone can answer for me. Say I get a custom s-500 with redburst finish, is it possible to request the back if the guitar to be all black instead of the burst? All of the pictures I have seen have the burst on both front and back of the body.
Thanks in advance!

Yes, it should be possible to request that and in some cases that is the way it will be finished, see this post in our G&L Knowledgebase: Can you explain the Bursted finishes on G&L instruments?

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much Craig. Now Im just hammering out the details before I order my s-500.

Craig I read your post regarding switching pickup covers that stated this "Regarding replacing pickup covers: because the pickups are wax potted, you might have to gently heat the existing cover with
say a hair dryer (don't use too high of a setting) before removal. Just enough to soften the wax to remove the cover."
I understand this clearly, however what about when you put the new covers on? Do you need to apply new wax and heat it to make it stick?

And lastly, I assume the tone knobs on the s-500 just pop off like normal tone and volume knobs?
