Hey there G&L guys. I have a guitar I got in a trade several years ago, know very little about, and now need to sell. Can you help me out by sussing some of the details? I checked the serial against the db, and I guess I'm not doing something right but I can't find anything around it in a giant range.
I'm hoping you guys can look at it and give me some details. Model is just ASAT no classic or anything like that? Any way to learn the year? Finish name? Neck wood? Are those original pick ups? Those aren't the original tuning keys right? Was this the bottom of the line or something higher? Any details or thoughts would be nice. Suggestions on value for when I toss it on Craigslist would be nice too.
You can find all the photos here:

Thanks in advance,
SiD

Re: Questions about my G&L ASAT that I'm selling
It looks like it had schaller locking tuners on it at one time, body and neck should be maple by the looks of it. Standard 3 tone burst. It is an ASAT with no 'model name' as that was the only one at the time. I may be mistaken but the pickguard isn't original, I am pretty sure the original guards were also black crinkle (aluminum), like the control plate and bridge.
There is no bottom or top of the line from G&L, all USA models are par for the course, none of them get special treatment. It is not one of the big companies with 50 intermittent lines to jack up the price of the USA top line ones further. G&L didn't do imports at all until much more recently.

Re: Questions about my G&L ASAT that I'm selling
Okay so it's not a "special" or anything like that. Why can't I find other guitars in the serial db with serials near this ones? You mention it was the only one made at the time, you have an idea on age then? So someone swapped the pickguard out as well eh? Thanks for all the info. I've gathered this is worth a bit more than the 90s Mexican Tele I traded for it a few years back?

I think that it is a 1995-1996 ASAT Special. It has the large MFDs and looks clean. Yes. I think that it is worth a lot more than the Mexi Tele that you traded for it. Nice guitar-- Darwin

Re: Questions about my G&L ASAT that I'm selling
Actually it is called an ASAT Special and is likely built around 1996 or 1997. It looks stock with the 3-ply plastic pickguard and the tuners on it now.sidmuchrock wrote:Okay so it's not a "special" or anything like that. I think that a previous owner installed some other tuners which used a screw to mount and then put the originals back on.
See Page 2 of the 1996-1997 G&L Catalog in our Gallery.
And, yes, I would say it is worth more than the 90's MIM Tele you traded.
Hope this helps.

Re: Questions about my G&L ASAT that I'm selling
Looks nice though I see a fair few dings in in the head and body - I don't think that it has a maple body, it looks more like ash, which I believe was the wood of choice in '96/7. Pristine ASATs sell for around $800-850, so you can expect a bit less than that.

Correction: Re: Questions about my G&L ASAT that I'm selling
The model name is "ASAT" not "ASAT Special". The ASAT Special has chrome bridge, control plate, and knobs. The picture of bothCraig wrote: Actually it is called an ASAT Special and is likely built around 1996 or 1997. It looks stock with the 3-ply plastic pickguard and the tuners on it now.

models in that catalog were swapped.
Here is a search string link which will get you the serial number [range of G046100 to G048000] listing of instruments registered in our G&L Registry: Registry search link.
I think the body wood is either Maple or Alder. The nut looks to be the optional Graph-Tech nut.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I'm gonna toss it on local craigslist here and see if I can find a new home for it. Guitars sitting in cases in storage closets are sad things.
Cheers!

You should correct your desription regarding the pickups--they are not Seymour Duncan--they are original G&L MFD pickups.

Thanks for the pointer, but I'd rather not mess with shipping or someone being miffed by a scar that they think is significant that I didn't highlight in a photo.
