Maple Neck With Binding

Post by Parker Hinson »

This could either be really sick or the lamest thing ever but does anyone have any pics of a vintage all maple neck with neck binding? Even a rosewood neck now that i think of it. Im in the process of ordering a custom legacy and dont wanna leave anything out without seeing it first, Thanks in advance!!!

while i like bound necks i personally don't think they play as easily as non-bound necks but that's my preference. from greg g's site:

here are the choices on the site. I like the feel of satin but much prefer the look of the vintage tint. if you sweat a lot or don't prefer a "sticky" neck then you'll probably be happiest with satin. is there a shop near you where you can try different neck finishes whether G&L or not?

Vintage Tint Gloss: Has a hue of an aged finish. Can work well for both a vintage or modern look. Not recommended with Wood Binding on a Swamp Ash body (doesn't match well).

Light Tint Gloss: More of a subtle hue than Vintage Gloss, adds character and warmth to the look. Versatile.

Clear Gloss: A great choice for use with a Natural Gloss finish.

Clear Satin: Standard on most models, satin is smooth and easy playing.

Jon, I'm totally with you on this. I reckon I'm going to give my ASATs with the GOT the sandpaper treatment to get the satin feel.

I wonder if they're going to offer a vintage tint with satin finish? I know that you can now order any finish with the frost (satin) top coat - it's be neat if they did that with the necks too

yeah I actually work at a guitar shop here in Bakersfield so I will check it out tomorrow.

Can anybody explain to me the difference between finish and tint? I absolutely love the vintage gun oil finish and would like to know the upsides/downsides to it and if its possible to have that + another type of tint/finish like Jamie suggests?

although i'm sure there are better explanations my understanding has always been that a finish is the end result or surface "finish" (gloss, semi-gloss, satin, etc.) of a piece of wood and that tint is "coloring" that can be added to a finish in order to achieve a particular look. although you work in a guitar shop and since you're in Bakersfield, you might want to take a trip down to Buffalo Brothers in Carlsbad. they have a good selection of G&L's and are extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of these guitars.

Hope this helps.

I don't think bound maple necks look right. Sort of like black shoes with brown trousers. Or a navy jacket with black pants. As to finish, I've only ever had the standard glossy finished maple necks. Never had a problem with them. Cool pics that were posted, though. I love the light blue Z3!
