When you receive a newly acquired G&L...

Post by Muleya »

Okay, I wanted to do a poll, but apparently we don't have that option here. But the question is:

How many folks pull the neck off of their newly acquired G&Ls to check out the dates stamped on the neck and body?

If so, is it the first thing you do when you pull it out of the case?

Do you wait for the first string change?

Do you wait even longer than that?

Or do you just leave well enough alone?

I used to leave well enough alone. But ever since I got a Broadcaster, pulling off the neck is about the first thing I do, as well as measuring the DC resistance of the pups. Of course, I do not forget to take pictures of whatever I find in the pocket and on the heel and it has become part of documenting the guitar (including updating the info associated with the S/N in the registry). And it has taught me who is responsible for doing the necks. Not that I know the real names of the G&L craftsmen involved, but I find similar markings during certain eras.

I have never taken off the neck of any of my G&Ls. If the guitar is right, then I don't want to mess with it and risk fouling it up. And as I've said many times, knowing the date(s) is a useless bit of information. The guitar is good, or it's not.

Now that said, none of mine were off when they came to me, except one--a three bolt, and it was super quick and easy to adjust the Micro-Tilt and button it back up. (Yea for Micro-Tilt!!!)

I have to agree with Boogie Bill I have never pulled the neck off my G&Ls.My Fender Strat either. "If its not broke don't fix it". Unless there is a problem there is no need to pull the neck. IMO.

I wasn't concerned as mine was new, but an old one I would probably pull the neck before I set up.

Interesting. I actually did on both my guitars...though had never done anything like it before, so was a little nervous! But I was very curious as to how old my first Legacy was since I had purchased it used. That one was a piece of cake, taking on and off.

I just did last night on my new one when I changed the strings...mostly just out of curiousity. But the neck was in pretty tightly on this one. I had put it back together and was restringing it and the higher strings were flat up against the frets! It didn't take me too long to realize the neck wasn't fully seated. I hadn't tightened the screws all the way, as I wanted to wait to do that under tension, but I had assumed it was fully seated...WRONG! But tightening them down pulled it to where it needed to be, so it's all good now.

It was interesting to do, though. The neck was dated as of the date I placed my order...Nov 24, 2010. And I had specified a light ash body, and the sticker said "Lightweight Ash Body". I should have taken a picture of it, as I think it had my all order specs on it. The body was dated Jan 31, 2011. The neck and body on my other Legacy are both dated within a week of each other.

Like many of you said, none of it really matters as long as the guitar plays like it should! But I found it interesting, nonetheless.

I just got a brand new Legacy. Since I'm a guitar tech, I go a little overboard. First I take off the neck. On the back of the neck there were 2 inventory control stickers which I removed, and lightly sanded the heel and the neck pocket for a nice smooth fit. Then I round the fret ends, and give them a good polishing. Put it all back together and give it a set up. Tighten the tuning pegs, polish the nut slots, check neck relief, intonation & pickup height. Then I actually find time to play it! All this makes a great guitar even better.
