Large MFD's and ____________; Project Config Q

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Large MFD's and ____________; Project Config Q

Post by Halowords »

Through a series of misfires, I ended up with a few project parts. One of which is going to be a Bubinba w/ Maple striped 25.5" neck that will have sharktooth inlays on an ebony board. Pretty cool, eh? However, I don't think that will look too cool with anything other than a Jackson or Ibanez SuperStrat type body.

Being a consummate overthinker, I'm thinking of using it as an excuse to try something different. Specifically, instead of a P90 guitar, I'm thinking of playing around w/ some of the large MFD pickups. If I try this, I'm thinking of pairing it with a humbucker or, well, I'm not sure. I guess I could make a project w/ nothing BUT MFD's. They sound kind of like P90-ish pickups, but I'm not sure what they might blend well with, or if I try MFD's & a humbucker (or single coils), where the MFD might stand out better. I'm thinking MFD in the neck a/o middle and a bucker in the bridge, but wonder if the MFD would be too bright relative to a humbucker to work there.

If nothing else, any insight on the MFD's and how they might work best (as stand-alones or in conjunction with something else)?

Can't speak for the large MFD, but a small one in the bridge pairs up beautifully with a neck humbucker.

I say give a bridge HB/ neck MFD a go if that's a config that appeals to you, just be sure to get a low/mid output humbucker otherwise you may have difficulty getting them to balance.

Well, what I'm kind of tossing around is maybe a Charlie Christian pickup. So I'm thinking the CC for some of the really squeaky clean stuff and something like an MFD (or a P90 or humbucker I suppose) for some slightly/moderately hotter stuff. Alternately, I am/was thinking of an MFD for fatter single-coil stuff and paired with a coil-splittable 'bucker..

Too many options I suppose. That said, the notion of a fat (and hopefully less-hum-inclined-than-a-P90) warm yet still kinda chimey single-coil with something else for the dirtier playing. So Blarg's suggestions makes sense with the MFD in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge, or a smaller (hotter?) MFD in the bridge (ASAT, maybe?) and a nice neck humbucker (or even a CC?).

The big MFD isn't very noisy at all, I have no issues with it in a room with a computer and fluorescent lighting. The large MFD also isn't what I would call high output overall, comapred to buckers at least.

If I am understanding correctly, the smaller MFD's are higher output and the larger ones are a bit fatter like a lower-output, less-bright P90. Is that at all accurate? Are the "glassier" than the larger ones? Does one clean up and get chimier better, handle overdrive, or stay quieter better than the other, or is the smaller MFD just a bit more trebly version of the same general concept?
