My first Legacy!

Post by nabo1er »

Hello!

What can I say. After years of drooling over pictures, I finally brought a Legacy home.
It is a used Legacy of undetermind age (with a serial 29039 I would guess around 2004) that plays as beautifully as it looks! :searching:

I was thinking about changing the nut to a bone one, would that enhance the tone or should I just let it be?
Another question I had is what is the favorite string brand out there in Legacy land? I normally use 10-46 DR's Black beauties but maybe I need strings that are clearer, sharper. Do I make sense?

Thank you all for looking!

Here's a post that might be of interest: Re: Nut Material ?.

Hope this helps.

Agree. Beautiful guitar.

D'Addario for me too; especially their flat-wound strings. So smooth. I have some Ernie Balls too which I'll be experimenting with next.

Hi all,

thank you all for your responses. I will try these strings soon. I had tried the flat wound a while back on my Epi Dot but didn't really like them. But then again, I was just starting to play.
I am really happy with my purchase and will really enjoy lots of moments with it.

Cheers!

I've used D'Addario XL110 or EXL110, Ernie Ball Slinky, D'Aquisto and DR Pure Blues (all .010-.046) with good results. Out of these, if you want a little more clearer/sharper tone out of your strings, the DR Pure Blues might do it. Easiest "upgrade" you can do to a guitar is trying out different strings. :D

+1 on DR. I especially like the Hi-Beams, but the Pure Blues and Tite-Fit are great too. I find DR strings to be very piano-like and I've been using them for years now. Are the Black Beauties coated strings? Coated wouldn't be my first choice for a Legacy or other "vintage sounding" guitar and while extended life sounds like a good idea, I like my metal bare. Good hunting.

As for strings, D'Addario XL110 on my Legacy and ASAT. I use them on my Grosh as well. The Hamer and PRS Archtop get D'Addario as well, but I put the 11s on those.

Bone nut - if you like the way it sounds and plays, why bother.

I use Fender Super Bullets 9-42 on all of my G&L guitars with the DF Vibrato. I think the bullet end really does aid in tuning stability.

Thank you all for the replies,

The more I play this guitar the more I want to play it! My son, the active hum freak, is pretending not to like them but I have a hard time getting his hands off my Legacy! :x The coated strings will have to go. I have played enough that the coating is all gone anyway and black dust has setteled on my otherwise pristine pick guard. I'll try D'addario's and see what I get.

I so agree. Changing strings can give you the fastest change of tone ever!
Gotta go! I hear my guitar crying for its daily strumming! 8-)
