ash body more vintage?

Post by skipster »

I've just read about a billion different posts about swamp ash. Would swamp ash sound more bluesy and bell like than alder? The reason this is a problem is because the G&L legacy (U.S.A.) was too much bass and mid range. Would swamp ash remedy this? What would it do? If i specifically ask for the light, not dense ash, would it help? I really like Jeff beck and he's very high end oriented. Is it the phrase "The lighter the brighter" correct?

Hey skipster,

I always have found Alan Ratcliffe's page on tonewoods very helpful. You'll find great tonal descriptions on Alder and Swamp Ash there.

Hope this helps,

I think you're on the right rack thinking ash is brighter. My Ash legacy has more highs & a deeper low end... much less mids than my alder / rosewood fretboard Legacy (which is all about darker midrange).

There's probably always exceptions to the rule, but when I'm tired of the midrange tone, I always reach for my ash / maple neck legacy. Reacts very well to the tone controls for pure smoothness too. (and my ash is a heavy bugger too - 9.2 pounds!)

You might check out this post in the G&L Knowledgebase, General G&L Questions sub-forum: Is my PTB circuit faulty?.

It might help you with the PTB system for dialing in your Legacy.

Hope this helps.

 I highly recommend the link Craig just added... It really changed the way I operate my Legacy's controls & it's fantastic. (It seriously should be included on an instruction sheet with new guitars.)
