Why the change in ASAT wiring?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Why the change in ASAT wiring?

Post by Dave_P »

The wiring is different between leo-era and BBE era ASAT's. BBE switching to the ASAT classic wiring. Was this done as a way to simplify manufacturing, or due to the pickup winding change, or some other reason. Just curious what brought about the change. Has anyone tried the old wiring scheme on a newer ASAT?

I'm curious too about that.
Let me deviate a little bit, but not so far of the subject : I noticed the treble pot and capacitor are very different than... say a regular Legacy or even a Legacy special. And I noticed a very different effect of the treble control (I find the legacy's much more usable than the ASAT one).
is there something I could do to tame the treble pot a little bit, change the 250 Kohm to a 500 Kohm as it is in the Z3 (and with the right capacitor off course) ?

sorry to be beside the point, maybe I should've post that in another thread

Could somebody point out the differences?

What's meant then with "all years"?

Leo era:

Current:

I took these a while ago, not the greatest as it doesn't show the whole circuit.

The cap values are the same, but the connections between the pots are different as well as the grounding.

One thing that was odd was my recent build (august 2010 order) had cloth push back wires aside from the pickups. Maybe it is in yet another transition? I don't recall seeing a resistor either.

I think the resistor is the main reason, for the tone control not working too hard. So if the full closed tone control appears unusable, that resistor does help to have a limited range, but better control within that range on the other hand. I don't know which value the resistor on the picture has, although the color code should be readable, but I expect something like the half or quarter of the resistance the tone control has, would be usable.
