G&L Poly finish - what is it EXACTLY?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

G&L Poly finish - what is it EXACTLY?

Post by blargfromouterspace »

I want to finish a body for a parts-a-caster build and was under the impression that polyurethane is polyurethane is polyurethane. It turns out there are a whole bunch of different kinds, some are two pack, some aren't, there are different quality levels....Most of the info on finishing guitars available online is for nitro finishes, and I'm not doing one of them - I want this thing to stay pretty for a while.

Does anyone know the type that G&L use on their instruments? It seems pretty damn good to me.

If anyone has finished a guitar with poly let me know what you used, any help will be most appreciated.

I would say they probably use something fancy like a UV cured poly.

I have used both Dupont and PPG poly 2 part products and the results are excellent. I do wet sand and buff them. Those brands are extremely durable. -- Darwin

There are a lot of poly finishes available and I don't know what G&L is using at the moment. I still shoot my own lacquer jobs in the garage but when I do a poly job I send it to my uncle at the local ford dealer where he can do them in a nice clean high tech booth, the last two he did for me were with a waterborne poly and clear coat, I think he said it was a dupont product, He does spray it thinner then he would on a car or truck and it's very high in UV protection being an automotive product. I've been very happy with them. The strat below looks more blue then green in natural light I was going for that two tone 57 Chevy look.

Thanks guys. I was going to get the paint from an automotive paint supplier, and had wondered if an automotive clear coat would be suitable.

Westside - that strat is nice, I like what you're going for.
