Re-Stringing my Bluesboy

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and to G&L guitars, but I've been playing about 35 years. I've owned many guitars and have dealt with most types of tuning machines, but none like those on my Bluesboy. They are non-locking and have an open slot instead of a hole to pass the string through. I assumed that I should lay the string in the slot with some slack and shoot for about three wraps around the post. Problem is, the stings often pop off the post as they approach being tuned to pitch. This has frustrated me to the point that the guitar now sits in its case, unplayed and unstrung, 'cause I'm tired of fighting it. Am I doing something wrong? Seems like such a simple thing but this guitar has me beat. Thanks for any advice on how to re-string this bad boy.

First of all, welcome to the board Jeff.

You need to stick the end of the string into the hole down the centre of the post, having first measured and cut the sting to a good length and bent the section of the string that will be going into the hole to a 90 degree angle, then wrap the string around. The tuners are vintage style tuners, and I HATE them because changing strings becomes a real chore. There are a lot of people here who like them. I suggest changing them to locking types to take the frustration out of string changing. You'll be able to sell the ones you take off on the marketplace section.

I love those tuners. Cut your string 2 inches beyond the post--shove the string down the hole and then bend it at a 90 degree angle at the slot before winding it tight. I've never had a guitar stay in tune so well.

Hey, thanks guys for the quick replies and for the great advice! It looks like my problem was operator error after all. I followed your advice and the re-string was no problem, although a bit time consuming. I saw some Schaller locking tuners in StewMac that might be a nice upgrade, but they're on backorder (the chrome ones anyway). Too late to ask Santa for a set this year, but might be something I pick up once they are back in stock.
