Could someone give me the short story on the good points and bad points of the SB-2 bass. Using it for blues and classic rock.. Thanks

The SB-2 is a simple, passive bass. It's very responsive to the player's touch, but is generally a pretty aggressive beast.
Onboard tone shaping is not what you might expect, as the instrument has no tone control. The guts of the tone is set by adjusting the volume of the neck pickup. The bridge pickup is then brought up to add flavor and color. While this might not seem like much, the SB-2 is really a pretty versatile bass.
Try one. It's the only way to really know what I'm talking about.

Thanks Ken. Any suggestions on what you would consider the "best" G&L bass? Very subjective I know, just like to hear some opionions.

Best? They're all great basses. My favorite is my L-2500. I've owned an L-2000, which is the bass franchise, but I wanted a 5'er. Same great sound, one more string.pegleg32 wrote:Thanks Ken. Then there's my old, late 80s, SB-2. Everything I described above. I've played JB-2s that were great, and L-1500s that'll rip your face off. Wouldn't want to forget the El Toro, which is a monster in its own right (but no longer made).
Yeah - I likes me some G&L basses. Pretty damned tough to go wrong with any of them!

If you're talking early, first-style SB-2, there is a volume and tone control (not the vol/vol as on the later model). Otherwise, I agree with Ken. Punchy and versatile. I can actually hear the instrument's wood in mine, which is a very good thing. - ed
