S-500 USA Neck Profile

Post by MChvro »

Hello dear G&L community!

This is going to be my first post and I hope to be participating frequently here, either asking questions, supporting others or sharing NGD and or other cool things.

Anyways, I am wondering if some of you could help to clarify the following.
I recently decided to transition all of my Fender guitars to G&L. My playing style and taste have changed over the years, and having the very positive experience of owning a G&L ASAT Classic S 2006 model a while back as reference, I knew the MFD pickups were going to deliver the sound I was looking for, and I wasn't wrong!

Anyways, so 1 of those guitars is a 2023 S-500 USA with a very nice and solid neck, very different to my previous G&L as well as my current Tribute Comanche, and the spec sheet says it is a Modern Classic. So the 1st impression was "wow, and this is the standard neck profile?" since the carve or shape screams attention to detail.
This made me feel confident to buy an ASAT Classic online. But when it arrived, despite being spec'd with same neck profile it felt very different. At first I thought, OK, so maybe it is just a tolerance difference? But it was clearly substantial.

So I started by measuring the fretboard width at the 1st and 12th frets. 1st fret was pretty much equal, but I noticed a difference of around .7mm at the 12th which motivated me to continue taking measurements of neck depth.
The results, the ASAT classic is within spec in the upper range of tolerance, and the S-500 is completely out.

ASAT: 1st fret, aprox .823" - 12th fret, aprox .873"
S500: 1st fret, aprox .897" - 12th fret, aprox 1.02"

I do like both necks despite feeling completely different, but I am wondering if maybe the spec sheet on the S-500 had a typo for the neck profile?
Is this maybe a Classic C as opposed to Modern Classic?

Checkout this post: What are the USA neck size options, past and present?.

I suggest you contact Memo Romero [G&L's Service Manager] and ask him to lookup the S/N of the 2023 S-500 in the factory logs to get the specifications of the neck. His email address is : repairs@bbesound.com. Ask if this guitar was a Built To Order or a Fullerton Deluxe model.
If it was a Fullerton Deluxe model then the neck profile would be the Modern Classic as there are no options for neck profiles.

Hope this helps.

Looking forward to hear what you find out.
