L-2000 Trying to consider all options.

Post by dragonbass »

Howdy Folks! In case you missed my intro thread, I'm Al from upstate NY. Nice to meet You!

About 20 years ago i bought a 1984 L-2000 bass. The body has 1 small ding in the face near the right of the middle pickup and the neck was jacked up on it. Truss rod isnt busted, but it doesnt work properly. It wont hold tension overnight and the neck is slightly bowed. Also the headstock seems to bow up under tension, kinda like its a little spongy or something. I seem to remember the shop telling me they got it in partial trade and that they were told it had sat in it's case in a closet for years. The electronics are all fine and as they should be. I bought it because i liked the looks of it and was told that they are awesome basses. I'm also a sucker for a good fixer-upper and this seemed to fit the bill nicely.

Fast forward to today. Life got in the way with work and kids and for a number of years i ended up being caretaker for my better half, who passed away from cancer this last December. I now have plenty of time to obsess over my favorite obsession. I think i may be driving myself a little :shocked028: crazy.

I have found an SB-2 Tribute neck in excellent shape with tuners that is already drilled for a 3 bolt neck. Will this work? Are all 3 bolt screw spacings the same? It seems my best option price wise and work wise, as it would just mean fitting it to the body.

Do you guys know of better options? or have any advice/insight on grafting an offshore SB-2 neck onto a Fullerton made L-2000 body?
I'm a big fan of using already made/vintage parts and don't want to put more into this than it's worth, so i'm a bit hesitant to just order a new made neck. What would you do?

Hey Al,

I do not believe Tribby necks will fit USA necks, you can find threads here and on bassesbyleo.com or talkbass.com about neck options. Pocket width is different. I recall Warmoth may have compatible necks. Maybe Musicman or Modulus graphite necks, but would research those more. Not sure if custom G&L necks are still possible, send email to G&L and see the reply.

Good luck and happy hunting… :searching:

Hey Sam,

Thanks again!
Thats the type of advice i'm looking for. I was afraid that the pocket size would be different and thats whats stopped me from buying the tribute neck. I've looked here, on Basses by Leo and Talkbass, but am finding very little in definitive answers on this exact dilemma. Thats why i started asking question here.

Near as i can fugure my best options are:

1) Hope to find and actual L-2000 neck that needs a new body. (Not much luck there)

2) Contact G&L and from past threads i've seen (if they still do it) are starting at $500 for neck and fitment and i have to ship the whole thing to Fullerton.

3) Contact J&L Musikraft and have one made to fit and do the finish work myself.

I don't want to part this out, or get rid of it really. But i'm beginning to think this may be a lost cause for me. Much as i hate to say it. I was hoping to save her and put her right so maybe some else will enjoy her too after i'm gone.

See this post: G&L Factory Neck Replacement and then
contact Memo about getting a replacement 3-bolt neck (with modern truss-rod) for your bass.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Craig!
I would love to go that route, but i'm not really comfortable shipping this heavy bass cross country. I'd probably be happy with an SB-2 neck, if i could find out if it will actually fit decently. I've seen a couple threads that say it's been done, but no more info than that.

In my research tonight, i found this. Generated by AI on google:

The heel width of a 1984 G&L L-2000 bass is 2.5 inches (63.5 mm).
The heel length is approximately 3.875 inches (98.4 mm).

The G&L Tribute SB-2 bass features a standard 2-1/2" (63.45 mm) width neck pocket for the heel. This is consistent with other popular bass models like the Fender J and P basses. The heel length is 3.875" (98.4 mm), and the pocket depth is 5/8" (16 mm).

Of course it would need fitting, but it looks to me like they may be compatible. What do you think?

Well. The minute i started asking for measurements on the SB-2 neck, the seller ended the sale. c'est la vie.

I did however get a lead on Talkbass to a gentleman who fixes warped necks and comes highly recommended. Not sure if i can mention his business here and found no references, so i won't. It sure would be a dream come true for me if he can save this neck. I believe in preserving history. It's what i really wanted, if it was at all possible.

Thanks Craig!

I did find the neck date tonite and entered it in the registry.
I also found "DEDOLEX 11-28-84" in the neck pocket wriiten in pen. Would this be who assembled my bass?

Well, i sent an inquiry to Memo Romero on the 5th about looking up my serial number to find any info he may have on this bass.
No response so far. Anyone know how long it usually takes?
