Two Pre-BBE ASAT III Models
Hi all, after a long and extensive search over the last year, scouring the internet and beyond for an ASAT III of black, natural gloss, or tan body and with a maple board, my search has yielded two results. I am now the proud owner of a '91 Natural Gloss ASAT III as well as an '89 Silver Sparkle. Both have been added to the registry. I have already played some shows with the '91 and cannot wait to get the new (technically older) one involved as well. The Natural Gloss was purchased on Reverb shortly after it popped up, and the Silver Sparkle was tracked down to an individual on social media in Nashville. His father in Minnesota is who it belonged to and he was kind enough get the okay to sell it and had it sent down to TN shortly after. Took a day trip from Atlanta last weekend to go and pick it up. I've had both guitars set up by my guy and he's sent me internal/guts pics from both that I'll share here for those who also appreciate. Last pic is of the whole fleet. Funnily enough, my G&Ls that I’ve acquired go in reverse chronological order from their production, with my ‘10 Tribute ASAT Special Deluxe Carved Top being my first, followed by my ‘08 Legacy Deluxe, ‘91 ASAT III, and now ‘89 ASAT III.
Curious what the neck tint options were at that time. Even though the lighting is a lot more warm from the Reverb images that the seller posted of the natural, the neck seems to lean a bit more warm/yellow than the neck on the silver, evidenced even in my own images of...not exactly the best lighting.
Quite excited at the acquisition of both, but worth noting that the silver sparkle is one of only two other Pre-BBE ASAT silver IIIs currently on the registry.

Thanks Jos! Truly appreciate your feedback when I reached out, as well as sites like yours and Greg's for a documentation of all things G&L. I can only hope that by posting in here or just being active in sharing about my experiences that maybe it'll help aid somebody else down the road who finds themselves in a similar situation!
Best,

G&L did not officially offer Neck tinting until July 1, 1997. Here is the page showing this new option (Gloss & Tinted):rowdyruffboy wrote:

Here is the reference link to the complete document (opens in a new tab): 1997_Retail_Price_List.
I believe that both necks have clear coats of gloss or satin finishes which have aged to their current color tones.
Here is another post to check out regarding later offered neck tints: Comparison of Neck Finishes.
Hope this helps.

Nice guitars! Congrats on successful searching. I quite like the maple-bodied ASAT III that I have, from Greg G's collection:

Most excellent ASAT’s, great score!
Appreciate all the dated pictures and close ups. Those are two fine specimens.
Remember, you can never have too many ASAT’s!

Re: Two Pre-BBE ASAT III Models
I was sad to read this post.
By the title I thought someone was selling two Pre-BBE ASAT IIIs. I saw the picture, and began deciding which one I would try and snag (the natural gloss) before I read closer.
Congrats on such a great score - and thanks for giving my heart some extra beats for a few moments.

Wow Tomanche! You got a good one. I referenced his collection a ton when I set out to find these, and to this day his black III with all crinkle hardware and maple neck is one of the nicest I've seen. The burst on yours is beautiful.
John and Sam, thanks so much! There really is so much magic in these old G&Ls, any configuration, any style. Lots of love was put into them.
Dan, sorry to give you a scare! I do feel like I am hoarding just a tad, especially with the low production on these. But you can rest easy knowing they're getting some stage use (and hopefully studio soon) and definitely not just sitting in cases!

Re: Two Pre-BBE ASAT III Models
Thanks! Everything I know about G&L I learned from ggjaguar’s site, and later, Jos’ site. The ASAT III popped up several years ago online at a large, East Coast store. After my purchase, merely 2 months later, one of Greg’s triple-bound ASAT Classics (Commemorative prototype) was listed at the same store. I couldn’t justify the outlay so soon after the ASAT III (the Classic swiftly sold), but swore that the next time one of those rare protos hit the market, I would pull the trigger. Shortly after, his top-bound ASAT Classic was offered. Both of these models are so good!rowdyruffboy wrote:Wow Tomanche! You got a good one. Would that East Coast store happen to be Atomic Music? I remember Jos mentioning that some of Greg's guitars went there. I had the chance to go this past November and was shocked to see a Cavalier there. Got to play it and it sounded awesome. Also, I recently looked at the triple bound writeups on Greg's site as well and was intrigued, truly look like some of the nicest G&Ls produced, as well as the top bound ones.tomanche wrote:Thanks! Yes, the ASAT III was at Atomic Music, which has listed several of Greg's guitars over the years. I think I've bought two G&Ls from them. That mahogany Cavalier is his. The ASAT Classic Signature top-bound was from a smaller store in the Baltimore area, and I've seen Greg's guitars listed at other area shops.

Re: Two Pre-BBE ASAT III Models
For those interested in these models, one is currently (as of 11/23/24) for sale on Reverb by Atomic Music. Looks like swamp ash in natural finish, rosewood fretboard, black crinkle hardware, and Skyhawk pickups (my preference!). I have no affiliation, information, etc. The 1499 price is consistent with the few that I've seen listed in the past several years. Just puttin' out the good word.
