Finish advice

Post by shepherd »

Looking to order my first BTO guitar. Plan on a Doheny v12, maple neck, saddle lock.
Can't decide between a Whiskey finish or the 3 tone sunburst. Both look amazing, but also there seems to be variability probably due to photos, lighting, etc.
I know it is subjective, but just curious if anyone has an opinion/experience with these two finishes?
Also, is the clear red no longer an option?
Thank you.

Whisky is nice, but personally I like sunburst finishes; 2-tone, 3-tone, cherry. That's just me. You should get what you like. I would peruse Craig's posts of BTO and CS guitars that G&L posted on Facebook prior to shipping. You might get ideas from them or even see a finish that isn't listed on their site.

I like a sunburst over a straight finish - unless the face of the guitar is figured, then it depends on the figuring. Color-wise, I prefer an ebon fretboard if the body is darker - ideally an ebonized maple neck with fret marker inlays colored similar to the finish on the body. So tasty.

That being said, I agree with TSH - look through Craigs BTO posts - you'll likely find what you're looking for, and probably find some stuff you didn't know you wanted to be looking for.

Yes, thank you Dan. I have an all black Skyhawk with ebony, and a lovely green ASAT with rosewood, so the maple is for sure. I love the look of the 70s Musicman Sabres either sunburst or Walnut with a maple neck. Sorta trying to recreate that magic.
