Lunch report Wednesday September 18, 2024

Post by DanDoulogos »

LUNCH: Chocolate flavored Whey protein with water. I've lost 30 lbs so far, going at about 10 lbs a month, but I'm only about half way there. Hope you guy are all eating better than I am. ;)

G&L TOPIC: I see there are a couple of Broadcasters up on Reverb this week. Thinking seriously about picking one up, but I know I am not set up money-wise right now. So I am hoping they find a good home who can appreciate them. I wonder how different, if they are that different, they are from a US ASAT Special - seems like they should be pretty near in sound etc. Anyone who has any firsthand experience with both should feel welcome, and even obligated to share their experience with the class.

NON G&L TOPIC: The silent creeping in of vanity sizes in retail.
It is only because I have been watching calories these past few months (and meticulously indulging my OCD-like commitment to quantifying everything I can about losing weight these past few months, that I came to see something of a weird discrepancy between my tape measure and the waist measurements of most of my pants.

This all started a few months back when I needed an accurate Body Mass Index measurement to see what kind of danger I was in health-wise (spolier warning: Plenty of danger) so you're supposed to measure your gut circumference at the point where it is largest. Mine was embarrassingly closer to 50 inches - did I say embarrassingly? I meant humiliatingly.

I then compared that to my waist measurement - which I didn't bother taking, since I already knew my waist measurement to be the current size I was wearing in Jeans. So that number put me well into the Morbid Obesity category. They say Morbid, because you're straight up more statistically likely to die than you would have been if you didn't eat so many desserts.

Well I'd read elsewhere that if you think of what you need to do as "lose some weight" - you're not really hitting the bullseye. What "they" say you should really be focused on is getting that gut measurement down to something less terminal. A rule of thumb they give is that you will no longer be at an elevated risk once the largest circumference of your waist is equal to (or less than) half your height in inches. As a former 68 inch tall man, now 67 inches due to gravity and aging - that meant I had to get the "fat" measurement at or under 33.5 inches.

I was at that time wearing... "stretchy" jeans that owned up to being 36" when you pulled them hot out of the dryer. But they were already 38's by the time you stepped out the door. I thought to myself, well, I only need to loose, what? 2 inches or so off my waist? Shouldn't be that hard.

When I measured my gut it seemed way bigger than it ought to if my waist was 36" So I measured my waist. It wasn't 36" it was closer to 40". The label said 36, but reality said - nice try.

That was when I discovered that many clothing manufactureres have (for years!) been intentionally "vanity sizing" their clothes. The idea being that you're more likely to buy a pair of pants (in this case) that fit you and show a smaller waist measurement than a pair of pants that fit you showing a much larger, and more accurate waist measurement. Not only that, you'll end up "liking" these brands because they "fit you better" etc.

If you want to feel good about your waist measurement - don't measure it with an actual tape line. The extra 3-5 inches you find will only depress you that much more. Call this a public service announcement.

Last Topic: The Jim Dunlop 741 Slide Capo.
So I was watching one of my favorite guitar players - Joey Landreth, playing slide rather well on his Suhr - using a weird capo that raised the strings high enough to play slide comfortably - and act as a capo for quick key changes between songs. I had a time and a half trying to find out what that was. I looked for capos, and I liked for normal-to-slide conversion "whatnots" etc. but for the love of me, nothing I found looked right.

Then one day I just typed in "slide capo" to a google search and came up with the dunlop 741 Capo slide. It looked right, but I could never find a still photo of him playing with enough visual resolution to confirm that this was the actual product he was using. I seemed to have more than one thing - and that made it more difficult to determine what was what.

Well, I bit the bullet and but one - and tried it out. It actually works quite well - though I am not much of a slide player. I did learn a few delta blues tunes from Robert Johnson back when I was first playing, but I haven't played a lot of slide lately. Notwithstanding I thought it was a fairly useful tool -and it was on sale the day I bought it. I wonder if anyone else has tried one, and what their thoughts were. I'll say this -it was a bit tricky to put on the first couple of times - not a lot of instructions, and just shy of intuitive - it took a few tries I'll say it again.

This I will say, I makes a decent er.. slide-capo. I really don't play enough slide to need one, but I can see it does lend itself to quick key changes - you can play in open G, and in less than a few heart beats, you can be set up in open A - without having to do much. Great for playing out, but still a bit over priced for guys like me, for whom it is essentially a vanity item.

Let me know if you've every seen one, or even better fiddled with one.

have a great day guys.

Thanks for the lunch report, Dan. Lunch today was ersatz grilled cheese with pesto and tomato, and a couple other things I won't mention because I don't often eat that stuff! More often, I sauté veggies in a Mexican, Cajun, or Italian theme, served with rice, pasta, or tortillas.
Broadcaster vs. ASAT:
My first ASAT was a 1988 maple-bodied with rosewood fretboard. Nearly a poor man's Broadcaster. I loved the tones of the jumbo MFDs. Later, I acquired a Broadcaster at a reasonable price. The maple body is a significant tone contributor; thus, in my opinion, that's the advantage of a Broadcaster over a non-maple body ASAT. Then, there are changes to pickup windings, body depth, etc. over the years. Otherwise, an ASAT Special delivers all the goodies you need. The Broadcaster simply has cache.

Hey Dan, thanks for the LR!

Congrats on your progress so far, that is excellent work - and I do mean work to lose that much weight.
I'm right on the line of healthy, not-healthy with weight and waist. I travel a lot for work so that doesn't help.
It's tough to take a customer out for a steak and break out a protein shake.

I've never played a Broadcaster but I imagine, as Tomanche does above, that an ASAT special will do everything a B-caster does.
But that's not the reason we buy them is it? I've wanted a Nighthawk for the same reason - even though I know a Skyhawk is exactly the same guitar.
For that matter, my '87 SC-3 has Skyhawk pickups in it so why do I need anything else?

Because it's there and we like it. Reason enough for me. :D

Best,
TJ

hi Dan, thx for the lunch report, i squeezed in a 10 min lunch with a bowl of soup and a slice of pizza.

congrats on the weight reduction! that helps alot of things, especially self image. downside (or upside) is eventually you need to buy new clothes cause the others are falling off. i haven't noticed the vanity cost thing but it doesn't surprise me, i buy most of my clothes at costco for great prices. there, i think you get what you pay for.

i haven't obtained a broadcaster yet, but have toyed with the idea. i like asat's and have owned several. some have commented here that they think the maple body makes a difference in the tone of the broadcaster. i have an early '84 skyhawk that is black with gold lettering and has a maple body. i got it for $750 with the ohsc and all parts. that may have to do. sure sounds and plays great.

I have been fooling around with slides for years. I've always considered it an experiment but i'm starting to develop a little proficiency. I use a dunlop glass slide #718, short and relatively thick, sounds nice with the electrics. I have a ceramic Billy Gibbons slide, a couple of steel ones and a brass one, for the acoustics. I think my favorite slide instrument is an SG so far. I use a gretsch resonator gtr, made in china. affordable. I tune it in open G and have been learning songs on that. Haven't seen the slide capo, sounds interesting.

have a great weekend!

Hey Dan,

Day (or two) late but glad to see yer LR!

No lunch today, business meetings and airport travel. Diet Coke and a bag of peanut M&M’s. Of course had basically same on plane. Yum-yum!!

On the Broadcaster vs Special have to echo tomanche. I do find the Broadcaster a little sweeter. Couple be the maple (syrup) body, but I wonder just how different the pickup windings are.

Weight wise I’ll be yer moral support Dan, as I’m trying to lose some weight as well. I lost a LOT of weight a long time ago and kept it off until last couple of years. Ankle surgery, work schedule and some general laziness have put on a little weight but I’m getting it off.

The capo-slide converter is new to me but I like it. I have a few slides I like to use from a few ceramic slides to a Will Ray Stealth Slide that the capo-slide will be fun to try. Just ordered a new Will Ray Fat Boy stealth slide. Will look for capo “sale” somewhere….

Thank you for the input. I was unaware of the Maple body. I am a big fan of maple bodies, so that only made the jonesing for a broadcaster that much worse! Gotta get me one.

TexasJack

Thanks for the encouragement. I've lost 32 lbs since June 9th. I'm looking about 2.5 lbs a week. It's not the fastest weight loss, but it's doable. I have a 20Km ride three days a week, and do some standard daily exercise. When I was studying Aikido several years back I did a lot of body work and I was in great shape. It's nice to see the flab coming off, but I lost a lot of muscle in the past 15 years. I probably won't get all of that back - but I'm satisfied to just be healthier. Thanks for the encouragement.

You have correctly surmised what I believe to be the correct state of guitar purchase ownership - always room for better and more.

Tea and a pizza? Sounds like a functional meal to me! Thanks for the encouragement. I have already felt the bittersweet pangs of all my pants suddenly not fitting at the same time. I had to stop my wife several times over the past decade from throwing out some of my old jeans. "They no longer fit you!" She was right, but I managed to keep a few - just in case I smartened up and lost some weight. Turns out, I was right!! But that means I only have three pairs of pants that fit right now, and two of them are sweats. I'm wearing 34" vanity waist jeans right now (actual waist measures at 36"). I need to get down to a (real) 32" if possible. I'm on target for December, so I probably am just going to use a belt for the next few months! These are problems I am fine with having, compared to having to suck in my gut to tie my shoes!

I have a few slides, I like my ceramic one the best, for sound - but I like the brass for "feel" I have an all nickel Epiphone resonator that I picked up for slide, and it sounds great right in the old delta pocket if you catch my drift. I learned a few Robert Johnson songs a couple of decades back - still have the tab for them, but just haven't played enough to get that back. Those Chinese Gretch guitars are fairly decent. I've seen a few, and they sound great. Haven't played one personally though.

Good to hear from you. Life on the road has a lot of highs and lows. peanut M&Ms go with both, so you're doing great! If you're anything like me, the hardest part of losing weight is gritting your teeth and just driving a stake in the ground: Today I will take hold of this and do it. I want the results, but I can't get them just dreaming about it, I have to do it. I know for myself I spent easily two and a half years thinking about it and hyping myself up to give it a real effort. Everyone is a little different, but when it comes to weight loss - it comes down to wanting it "enough" to overcome your own sloth. I had been putting it off for months, because it is hard. Then one day - June 9th to be precise - I decided enough was enough. I knew full well that I had been procrastinating for years -and that the only thing stopping me was ME. I had a long talk with myself and the Lord, and decided I didn't want to stay there. How does it read? Where the tree falls, there it lays. I figured I was already half way down that particular fall, and that that day was as good a day as any to turn it around. I don't think I had any particular strength of character any different on that day than any other. Rather I think I just gave up on putting it off for a better day - since no better day was coming. I was willing then to do on a less than better day - and that worked. :D

I still think that capo-slide was overpriced for what it was - but I don't regret getting it. I can see it being something I could use if I put my mind to it - that was good enough to justify myself in buying it.

Everyone
Thanks for commenting. A forum like this shouldn't be a quiet place. Glad you guys chipped in to make some noise.
