RIP John Mayall - July 22, 2024

Post by DanDoulogos »

John Mayall spent more time on the piano than on the guitar or harmonica, but he was a great blues guy, and one of my first exposures to him came from the first band I played in where both the drummer and other guitarists were blues fans. This song was one of our first "standards"

RIP John Mayall.

Yes, that is Clapton on guitar and in a lot of the photos.

during the 1st couple years of the pandemic I spent a good bit of time delving back into original recordings of many of the fore fathers of the blues, thanks to youtube. i also tried to catch up on some of the seminal mid-60's blues and rock recordings that i was too young to appreciate back then.

this included the Mayall/Clapton "bluesbreaker" "beano" record and also the Mayall/Peter Green "a hard road" record.
really important stuff and a good listen. Thanks, Dan, for "Steppin Out"! that les paul/marshall combo tone was legendary, especially on the bed of Mayall's hammond B3/leslie

RIP JM

My Cousin Randy Resnick (Guitarist) toured w/ Mayall (1974?) in Europe and Japan.

The lyrics in the track above include mentioning Randy, Red Holloway (Sax), High-Tide Harris (Guitar) and Larry Taylor, Bass.
Randy takes the 2nd guitar solo I believe.

I house-sat for Randy, and a guy they met while in Spain on tour visited the US. We went to Mayall's home in Laurel Canyon.
He had a full-on cast on his leg- Apparently, he jumped into his swimming pool from the roof whilst "having fun" and broke his leg.

He was a cool host, and even played some blues on the piano for us.

John Mayall was instrumental in expanding the popularity of the Blues. He always featured stellar musicians, especially guitarists, and leaves a great discography behind.

As a side note: Randy (an amazing genius-level guitarist now living/ working in Paris) was ummmm..."Let Go" by John, because he didn't wnt to clean up his act as far as his stage appearance- Meaning he only wore T-Shirts & jeans on stage, whereas Mr. Mayall preferred a more "dressed-up" or Rawk Star look. Apparently, (at least that's what Randy told me!)

I really dig a lot of Mayall's tracks, some good stuff! (Never dug Larry Taylor bass work especially- sorry! Don't bug me about it! )

RIP John Mayall, a great BluesMan.
