Remembering a great 1980 Canadian song

Post by sam »

Had an earworm grab me the other day so been working on an old favorite from the 80’s.

The Kings from Vancouver had popular song This Beat Goes On (Switching to Glide). I was living in northern Indiana at the time, so proximity to Canada may have helped me hear this song, not sure if it was played in other areas of the country. Who else remembers this song?

Great pop song IMHO! :alright:

Ah, the eighties and the onset of digital music in the form of CDs.

I recall the song, but I had to look up the band (the Kings).

Seems they put out a few albums, but this is the only song I was ever familiar with. It truly is ear worm worthy.

Catchy, yes. And I had no idea they were Canadian or from Vancouver. I mean, how could I miss a band with a member named Mister Zero? I was nine in 1980 so I will use that as an excuse.

I was waiting on my Canadian compadres to show up.

I was a teen at the time and radio was “king”, appropriate word here I guess, and every now and then something would come on that was just fun.

You guys have anything lately that took ya back to younger days?

Now that you mention it, in my late teens and early twenties I actually listened to a lot of Canadian bands. Most you would not have heard of as they didn't break in the US for the most part. I liked a band called the Headstones and if you are fan of " Mayor of Kingstown " you would know their former lead singer.People look different with and without hair it seems.

I like Chilliwack’s album ‘wanna be a star’ from 1981, the MTV era, notable for the song ‘my girl’. (gone gone gone she been gone so long…), but every song on the record is catchy , well performed and produced. Basically the record kicks ass. I still give it a listen, they were so talented!

Paul - do not recall the band but love the Headstones name.

John - Boy do I remember that song, it did get some airplay.

Speaking of the lead singer. I forgot to mention Tom Cochrane was lead singer of Red Rider, then went on to solo fame with his single Life is a Highway.

Round the same time there was a band called "Queen City Kids" - they had a couple of hits on Canadian radio.

Here is a gem from 1981: https://youtu.be/v-BSXNaO9BI?si=P9MYVRbdsjWD9PG_

But this was my favorite tune from the band - always thought it was a little haunting: https://youtu.be/jRkhRjXJBKg?si=ac2ke4R4fzyHfp4N

At the time they seemed on the verge of breaking out of Canada and onto the world scene - they certainly captured the dope of the pigment for their day. I never understood why they didn't go further than they did.

I remember this band named Parachute Club which is from Canada from the early 80's. I had this CD which I liked and played it a lot back then.

Dan - I dig that band. How some make it and some don’t is a mystery

Kit - I remember Parachute Club but not the songs. Will have to spend time on iTunes and YouTube

A while back I had to find a new BBCode to play YouTube Videos inline because the existing 2 video BBCodes no longer worked.
I updated the Tutorial on posting videos to reflect the change, see:
Tutorial: Posting YouTube videos .

Here is the video you posted using the current ytv BBCode:

Here is the code:

Code: Select all

Hope this helps.
