WHAT??? No ASAT Bass??

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

WHAT??? No ASAT Bass??

Post by LarryNJ »

Pardon me if I'm behind the times. There are always changes & revisions, etc.

BUT THIS!!!

My first G&L Bass- ordered to spec, was before the current changes to G&L- "Fullerton" BTO, etc.

It was an ASAT BASS (Yes-Bass- Guitarists are a necessary evil ;They DO NOT hold down the bottom, which is what makes sh** happen, we know that) End of rant.

It was Premier Finish Blonde w/ wood binding-awesome- A birds-eye maple neck, no fret markers.
https://photos.shutterfly.com/full/113484722121

I of course wish I still had it, along w/ my other G&L Basses. They were all perfection in bass guitar production, really.
A LPB SB-2, a Graphite Metallic M2K, and the most magnificent L2K-Custom Creations Special Blonde, only 50 made, can't even find any info anywhere on it it's so rare -and it was SUPREME above all.
Boy, was I stoopid to sell these. Especially the Commemorative L2K Believe me. Try & find one. I'm talking BLACK Crinkle hardware, even the back control cover...

Now then-Back to topic-

Let me be brief:

WHAT THE HE*** happened to the ASAT Bass (besides low sales #s I mean). And before I get back to my AM coffee- let me say to those who would DARE utter "Neck Dive"- You're trippin, and need better posture, and/or a 3" strap. Really; get over it.

The ASAT BASS was an absolute classic in design and style. I suppose maybe the Custom shop could or would build one, for say, about $10K and a year wait, oh. well.

Thank you for your time. :happy0065:

They are there (on G&L's website), just hidden in plain sight. ;) :searching:

Here you go:
https://www.glguitars.com/build-to-order-bass/
https://www.glguitars.com/product-category/4-string/

No, don't look here  :
https://www.glguitars.com/product-category/USA-Basses/

And, yes, the G&L web people have a lot of work to get their new website up to the current 2024 specs per the G&L Dealer Price Lists and
fiix their lists of "By Model" and "Popular" categories.
I have given up on sending them feedback and suggestions, since the list I sent them a few months ago is still not done. :silent:

Check out these links here (guitarsbyleo.com):

Production List of G&L Instruments (USA)
3/1/2024-present Build To Order Specifications & Options
Current G&L Specifications and Options

Hope this helps.

LOL!

Craig, thank you, YOU DA MAN! :happy0065:

I too cannot keep up with the nomenclature of the G&L product mix.
With the Tribute series becoming more popular (as are many of the offshore counterparts of USA builders- MTD/Saratoga; Lakland/Skyline, etc etc)
It makes the task even more confusing.

I mean, I GET IT, but still long for the good ole days. When I called a Dealer for my ASAT in 2009 -Jeesh, time flies-
I picked the available options and that was that.

The other sad thing is $$$- No I won't go there, Bass prices have skyrocketed like everything, & I guess the G&L USA line is still a good value.

Recently I priced out a SB-1- Nothing extreme, mind you- Stuff like fret marker delete and I was sticker shocked at the quote.
For some reason, my specs had to be classified as Custom Shop, and it was quite a bit more than I had hoped. maybe later.

Glad to see the ASAT bass is still here. Yes, its an L2K but it has an excellent vibe IMO, and...

NO IT DOES NOT NECK-DIVE :shocked028: :fighting0030:

(Mine didn't).

I think your best bet is to look for something "used" or on a dealer's lot on Reverb or Ebay that gets really close to what you are looking for. Recently G&L seems to have removed many of the options that used to be available on build to order and has made them Custom Shop only. It ends up a lot more expensive and a very long wait.

So true.

My ASAT and SB-2 were what is now called built-to-order now I guess. It's pretty sweet to spec a bass out- The necks, fretboards, and finishes that G&L
offered back when I ordered were pretty tight, and Man, when those basses arrived- What a treat. Both came with nice G&G HSC's too; I guess that
is past tense now too, 'cept as an option?

No doubt there's surely some nice units on the market, prolly priced OK too.

However- If and when I can get another G&L (probably either an SB-1 or Kiloton) I'd love to spec it out.

And BTW, my ASAT took about 3 months then IIRC, and the SB-2 was here in a month!!! :o

My time frame on an SB-1 when I inquired fairly recently was...about 6-8 months; maybe more I think

In 2023 G&L did remove many of the Options from the January 1, 2023 Build To Order Price List. Reference post: 1/1/2023 BTO Price List changes ....

However, in 2024 G&L restored most of those options and added some more, too. Reference post: 3/1/2024-present Build To Order Specifications & Options.
As I understand, they also rolled back prices, too, but you will need to contact G&L dealers to find out what current prices are.
One of the big surprises to me was that they added the CLF Research models to the BTO model list.

Hope this helps.

There's a great deal of things to check out on the G&L site, and at first glance, it seems like there are quite a few more build options than "before".

I see Black hardware (nice) Black Binding; more.

Also, the "other" Made-in USA builder (You know who I mean :shh: ) recently started letting buyers make certain choices.

It's all good.

Thanks for correcting me Craig. I hadn't checked in a while since I bought my Bluesboy a while back. Good to know that the options are back.

We've made several in the standard production line in the last week. They still exist, they're just not a super common order item.

I have 2 in the works in the Custom Shop currently as I type this.

I stand humble and corrected. How could I even think that G&L would kick the ASAT bass to the curb??
The 'ole "Anti-Satellite" ( read: telly) guitar shape --I mean BASS -shape is a national treasure, up there with Mt. Rushmore etc.

I would love to see the Custom-shop ASAT (basses) they prolly ROCK.

Anyway, I dedicate my post to those who appreciate the mellow single-cut character of the ASAT BASS (and guitar I suppose).
