RIP David Sanborn

wow, so sorry to hear about this loss to the music community, David Sanborn (on 5/12, was 78, prostate cancer), consummate cool '70s and on up alto sax player, lots of great records and performances with so many great musicians. got to see him a bunch in Philly when i lived in center city in the '80's, Kool Jazz Festival, Mann Music Center, Academy of Music (with Robben Ford), often played with Hiram Bullock - amazing guitarist, and the last time i saw him, he (and also Joshua Redman) opened for Ray Charles in New Orleans at one of the Jazz and Heritage Festival weekends in 1999.

I wasn't really familiar with his work.

Maybe the better way of saying that is that I heard a lot of his work but never knew whose work it was.

Spent some time this morning just watching through several videos and reading up on Sanborn. Wow!

Sad indeed, like Dan said we’ve all heard him but didn’t realize how much he was involved in many productions.

Losing too many influential players from a lot of genres.

I am not very familiar with his work but I used to love his show Nighmusic. He had the most varied array of guests. He sat in with many of them.

He was "represented" as a smooth jazz, Kenny G. type of performer, but OH SH**!
He could play with the fluency of Coltrane and the melodic style of Sonny Rollins.
Really- one of the greats of the Sax who made a popular name for himself in the music biz. Not an easy accomplishment.
