Strange pickup

Post by MarcE »

Hi, Does anyone know this bridge pickup? What brand, rubbish or a good one or better than the original Humbucker?
It was on my G&L F100 when I bought it secondhand. There's no brand or type on it. If rubbish, I want to replace it.

After 2,5 hours of search, no idea how to find the complete url to my pictures in the GuitarsLeo-Gallery.
So, maybe you can follow this links.

Thanks in advance.

I have no idea on the bridge pickup but it is not a G&L pickup.
Since you bought the guitar used and it has been modified, I would check out the wiring to see if any other mods have been done to it.
Check out the Album: Instrument Manuals and Wiring Schematics in our Gallery.

Does this guitar have the stock MFD neck pickup? And how do the pickups sound together? Do all the switches work as expected? See the instruction sheets
in the Gallery.

I'd like to see some more photos of your full guitar, too.

Hmmm - maybe DiMarizo's old P-90 sized humbuckers from the 1980s? I think that the set screw polepieces seems to be a DiMarzio thing on their higher-output pickups (like a Super Distortion/Super II, etc.).

I can confirm with certainty that it is a DiMarzio Super Distortion Humbucker in the P-90 size. My 1972 Les Paul's previous owner had one installed in the bridge position in 1979, until I replaced it with a Lollar P-90 a couple of years ago. I pulled the DiMarzio from storage just now to look at it, and it's identical top and bottom. Mine has no markings as well. The SDH was THE replacement pickup in the 70s. It produces a lot of output (designed to overdrive the amp's preamp), and I think it sounds good. It will sound different than a G&L humbucker; it depends what you want. You can adjust both rows of pole pieces, and that can accentuate different frequencies to taste. IMHO, it's a viable alternative to the G&L pickup, especially since it probably fit the original rout. If you decide not to use it, it may sell for a decent price on Reverb or eBay.

I only replaced mine because I finally bought a humbucker-equipped guitar (Ibanez Artist 2622/Steve Miller) and wanted the Les Paul to return to its dual P-90 tone.

Many thanks for the help! :D In my opinion all the switches work as expected and the guitar sounds great, altough I'm not very interested in super distortion. I thought, maybe it's better to have it in it's original 2 humbuckers state.
I don't know what to decide. Meanwhile, thanks to your info, I think I've found something like it here: https://reverb.com/item/16721116-dimarz ... ion-pickup And here: https://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/3152807 ... Cream.html
Here some pictures of my G&L. Bought it somewhere begin the '90 but never played much on it (It's not my only guitar) :).

And after reading these customer reviews I think it will stay were it is. :-) Only... it should have been a black one.  8-)
