G&L knowledge freaks please help!

Post by GOONBASH »

here are a few pics of the tuners off my G&L Legacy, which seems to be an early 1993 model judging by the serial numbers that bracket it in the registry.

so here are my questions;
i assume by what i've read that these are Sperzels because of the single 'locator pin' whereas Schallers would have two 'locator pins' is this correct? (the tuners only say 'G&L' on them they do not say sperzel or schaller)

i want to change to locking tuners so i will probably just use the same brand so they drop in with no modifications.

if these are Sperzel, Sperzels are sold in a 'graduated' and 'non-graduated' version. by eye the ones on my Legacy look staggered (graduated) as though the high E is taller than the low E, but i dont have anything accurate to measure with. but the Sperzel 'graduated' locking tuners say they are graduated so that you dont need string trees, but on my Legacy the stock tuners seem to be graduated but i also have a string tree. did my Legacy come with staggered height (graduated) sperzel tuners and a string tree?

so which locking tuners do i order for a drop-in installation? and if it is the graduated sperzels that i should order, do i keep the string tree?

please help, thanks.

I cant say whether they're Sperzels or not. I recently replaced the standard tuners on my '97 ASAT (they look virtually identical to those on your guitar) with 'graduated' Sperzel locking tuners and left the string trees on - it doesn't hurt to just leave it there, that way you aren't going to lose it. I had to drill another hole for the 'locator' pin as it was slightly further from the post than that on the stock tuners. The actual hole for the post to poke through was the right size, definitely not too big.

I'd recommend the 'graduated' ones. You will be able to notice a big difference in the heights of the posts when you have them in your hands. The tallest posts are for the E and A strings, the shortest for the B and E.

Happy modding!

thats strange, the low E and A seem the shortest on my guitar, and the b and high E look the tallest, could someone have put them on backwards??? someone owned it before me. my guitar body was also drilled for 11 hole and 8 hole pickguards, but someone on this forum told me that G&L never used an 11 hole. i am starting to wonder if the guy before me had cut an 11 hole strat guard to fit and maybe had locking tuners on it, and then took all that off before he sold it to me, and maybe put the stock tuners back on in reverse order. there are no extra holes drilled for the tuners though, so if he did that he must have used a drop-in tuner replacement. i am thoroughly confused!!! HELP!! haha.

Yes , if E and A were shortest they were on backwards.

Definitely possible someone had a different setup they did not want to give up, as long as it wasn't advertised with the other stuff I say no harm no foul. Although a few extra holes would have been good to know about (however the guard should cover em no?)

i am not too worried about the extra guard holes, afterall i am modding the guitar myself and i got a good deal on it. what i want to know really is what locking tuners will drop-in. i tried a friends gotoh magnum locker that he is going to put on a strat and when i set it in my tuner hole it seemed like it didnt stick through high enough compared to the g&l tuners plus it would have required drilling an extra hole for the set screw. i dont really mind drilling a little if i have to but don't both schaller and sperzel make locking tuners so one of them might just drop in if i can identify what i have on there now that are in the pics above? i am borrowing my friends calipers to measure with tonight so i will check for sure to see if the tuners that are on there now were put on in the wrong order.

after using the digital calipers i dont think they are staggered height. i took each tuner out of the headstock to measure and the difference between the tallest and shortest in overall length (measured from the back plate where g&l is inscribed to the tip of the post) is only one tenth of a milimeter which is easily within measuring error tolerance. and the difference between longest and shortest (measured from the side that butts up against the back of the headstock to the bottom of the notch cut in the post where the string would go through) is only one half of a millimeter. staggered height tuners would have much more of a difference between tallest and shortest, right?

i would still like to know if anyone can tell by the pics if these are schaller or sperzel. that way i have a better idea what locking tuner to order.

thanks for any help.

It appears there aren't too many "G&L knowledge freaks" around here anymore.

In any case, those look like Schaller tuners. Here's a link to the StewMac Schaller page:

Ches, is correct those are Schaller made tuners. I've never seen Sperzel tuners with the G&L logo on them. Every G&L logo tuner I've seen have been Schaller tuners.

Not according to these pictures. Scroll down to the headstock shots:

They may brand other manufacturers, but I don't think they brand tuners on G&L's.

Hey Sprinter! Haven't been around here much at all. Looks like most of the old timers are AWOL. Glad to see you're still around.
Hope all is well -

I looked at those pictures and you can faintly see the Sperzel name etched in cursive. I certainly don't know for certain that ALL, but these are...

Looks like I misunderstood your original point. I read your comment to mean they would have put the G&L logo on the tuner. Looks like you meant they brand them with the Sperzel name. Makes sense.

Another vote for those tuners being Schallers. The locking Schallers SHOULD drop right in.

Yes, your picture is a Schaller. The locking 2000P, M6L 1 pin Schaller from Stew Mac will drop right in. Schaller puts the G&L logo on. Sperzels in recent years are labeled Sperzel on the G&Ls. -- Darwin

The lighting was perfect in those shots! I read his original post to mean Sperzel would have put the G&L logo on the tuner. I used your shots to show they didn't. You guys always have the best pictures!

I have an incoming Legacy and I'd like to get a set of Schaller locking tuners for it. It's complicated by the fact that I need a lefty set. There are a couple of sets on Ebay part # TK 0974-L10 "Schaller Locking Lefty Chrome". I'm not sure these are the correct ones as the Stewmac site doesn't list the Schaller part #.
Does anyone know if these are the correct ones ?

btw it's a three bolt '96 or '97 Legacy with standard G&L tuners if that helps any.

Thanks.

edit: turns out those ones will require an extra hole to be drilled for each tuner, and I don't really want to go there.

The TK 0974-L10 at AllParts.com are the lefty version of part TK 0974-010. But in both cases they have tabs. And I believe you want the ones with a pin, which I couldn't find. They only seem to cary the right-handed version (TK 0974-011); 0974-L11 seems to be non-existent. :(

Southpaw, I have been down with the flu. Yes, you have to make sure you get the right tuners for direct drop in. Fender newer Schallers are all 2 pin. G&L uses one pin and if it has a G&L logo it is a Schaller. The Stew Mac ones drop right in. If the tuner is labeled Sperzel, the one pin Sperzel locking will drop right in. Jos pointed out that there are also some that have tabs with a screw used for mounting. You problem is indeed to find the correct left hand model. I would send an e-mail to Stew Mac and see if they source them. The Schaller locking are staggerd but the Sperzels are not. Hope this helps Paul.-- Darwin

I just posted What tuners are used on G&L guitars? in the General G&L Questions sub-forum of the G&L Knowledgebase.

Hope this helps.

That is a Schaller tuning machine. You can buy Schaller locking tuning machines from Stu-Mac that will fit your guitar with no modifications.
