G&L MFD Tele Single coil polarity(smaller ones)

Post by whitecloud »

I have searched this forum after sifting through both Knowledge base forums and came across this thread
http://www.guitarsbyleo.com/FORUM/viewt ... ing#p94439

and this particular comments

"You should check carefully with Bare Knuckle re magnetic and winding polarity, to keep the combined pickups in-phase and hum-cancelling. They do talk to their customers well.
The G&L MFD tele-style back pup is magnetically "South-up", i.e. the North end of a compass needle points at its polepieces. So you want any new neck single-coil supplied magnetically North-up.
I'm not sure whether BK supply MQ's with 2-conductor+screen wiring. If so, then you have all options open.
But I recall an ex of this forum (one Louis Cyfer) fitting an MQ, and having a perfectly successful discussion with BK about polarity etc."[/i]

What I am trying to determine is the polarity and how these MFD pups are wound. I have a Tribute ASAT Classic with 2 MFD's and an incoming Tribute BLuesboy. I will keep
some of the MFD's in both or either guitar but will swap some as well. This information is critical when I contact and discuss what I want with any particular winder. So I am checking to see if the above intel is correct. Oh and I am not at this time going with Bare Knuckles as I have some others in mind Thanks in advance

See this post: P/U volume problem in Mid position!.

If you are going to use your Tribute ASAT Classic to replace the neck pickup with a non-MFD pickup you will likely need to mod the bridge MFD pickup as mentioned in that post.
Your Tribute Bluesboy will already have the modded bridge pickup, so if you change the neck pickup with a non-MFD pickup you should be good to go.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. So it's unlikely that I wouldn't have the modded MFD in the Bridge, I see you got conformation both USA and Tributes Bluesboy's are modded and if in question check to see if it is yellow or red ground/basplate. What I don't get is so many have issues putting a non G&L hum-sized pickup in the neck especially since most have 3 or 4 wires. If after adjusting stock humbucker and still unsatisfied first try my BG "Pure90" hum sized P90. This pickup has 4 wires, 1.bare and black=ground, 2.white=hot 3. red 4. green the last two never have used in the guitar it was in assume a coil split but kinda odd for a P90. If I run into issues and out of options with that, next would stock humbucker back in and swap 250k pots for 500k and put in ,470 resistor so the bridge MFD sees a 250k value. This hoping to brighten up the neck bucker. So now lets address my ASAT Classic Tribute BSB. What I don't get is if we know how the stock MFD polarity and I inform the winder they also offer to 2 hot leads for that neck single coil so wouldn't it be a matter of swapping wires until we're good and w/o modding the Bridge MFD(which I won't do)?
Some if this info I is on the thread inserted below and are NickHoren's comments and again thanks for your time

BIG TIME EDIT:, with all the back and forth comparing all these threads that are somewhat pertinent I got a bit flustered and confused IT IS the Bridge MFD pup in my ASAT Classic BSB not the neck pup that I might want to swap out. Want to at least have one MFD bridge so kinda want to keep it in the BLuesBoy
Sorry for the confusion
