2011 G&L Legacy USA - Nitro finish?

Post by Zeidon »

Hello,

I am looking for a G&L nitro legacy guitar and have found this on reverb: https://reverb.com/item/5595330-g-l-leg ... tro-finish

However, I am not sure if this guitar is finished on nitro as it it from 2011 and the spec sheet does not say nitro. Could you guys help me to know if it is really nitro as the owner believes?

Thank you!

I would think that if the finish were Nitro it would call that out on the spec sheet. You know what they say...buyer beware.

Agreed, see here for example of spec sheet with clear indication the finish is Nitro...

This is a guitar that is advertised incorrectly. That guitar does not have a nitro finish as per the build sheet.

It seems we all agree this is not a nitro. I am still not 100%sure because of the 2011 special edition "thin-skin". I do not know if the spec sheet said nitro back then.

Nice legacy anyway!

Thank you very much guys!

AFAIK, those 2011 G&L Nitro Thin Series Special Build were commissioned by Pro Guitar Shop who was a G&L dealer at that time.
You might contact G&L Customer Service (look under Repairs and tech support on that page) and ask them to look up the serial number to tell which G&L dealer it was shipped to and whether or not it has a nitro lacquer finish.

The photo looks like the body finish is Polyurethane. Nitro finished 2-tone sunburst finish would have the old style narrower band colors.

Hope this helps.

Greetings everyone!

New to the forum for the express purpose of learning more about my Legacy. BECAUSE

I'm the one with the guitar ad in question. So far, this forum hasn't really helped me determine/prove/dis-prove the guitar is nitro finished. The smell on the other hand is another story.

First! I AM NOT trying to cheat anyone. I'm simply going by what I was told when I bought it. I also had to google "why does my guitar smell sweet?" to confirm the sales pitch so-to-speak. I don't believe the individual who sold the guitar to me was disingenuous with an ulterior motive: I still got a fantastic guitar out of the deal. However, it does appear to be a more desirable trait and thought I could make better use of that fact. I honestly believe, based on research, it is a nitro finish but it's not why I bought it.

Second, I'm not selling the finish. I'm selling a fantastic guitar, in mint condition, for a reasonably fair, market, price. I just happen to lack the proof on paper.

Third, I considered the difficulty in advertising the guitar as having a nitro finish even though the build sheet (from 2011) didn't make any reference to it. As such, I also tried to find a comparable build sheet from 2011 that did. My only resource thus far is my good friend who is a vintage guitar historian and collector; Gibson and Fender certified luthier; very familiar with vintage guitars; one hell of a shredder - tell me it was nitro.

I've decided to pull the ad until I can either talk to someone at G&L, or they chime-in on here.

It's possible that the Spec Sheet might be in error on the finish. I suggest you contact G&L support, see link in my previous post.
They should be able to confirm the actual finish type from the factory records and if it is in error get you a corrected copy.
Like I mentioned in my previous post, the only 2011 Nitro finishes that I am aware of were commissioned by Pro Guitar Shop, so ask G&L Support if was shipped to that dealer as a special build.

Hope this helps and let us know what you find out.

Okay... I just got off the phone with G&L (Crap! I'm lousy with names).

They had this to say:
It was built on 7/7/11 and shipped to: Dallas Used Guitar in Grapevine, TX
It absolutely COULD be nitro. As plainly stated to me: EPA regulations are VERY strict so they never promoted, or disclosed the use of nitro it was a "hush-hush" operation they kept very little records of. [DAMMED C.A.R.B. at it again!]

So I get the impression that it was a "secret squirrel op" that didn't make it to the build sheet. The only other way besides the smell that IKO would be to rub the finish with a solvent which I WILL NOT DO.

It does/not help me a whole lot except to say that build sheets from 2011 and earlier likely will not say nitro on them. Nor would they be advertised as such unless... "N/A" means "Nitro Applied" ;) LOL

Time will tell as the finish ages. In the mean time, enjoy your sweet (smelling) guitar!
