Brad W. Traweek's 1997 ASAT Classic 4-Bolt Prototype
This heavily-customized ASAT Classic is the very first non-Invader G&L to feature a four-bolt neck. The guitar was built by Plant Foreman Ed Sebest in order to demonstrate that the four-bolt concept was viable for the entire lineup, not just the Invaders. (See the FAQ on this site for the details regarding the introduction of the four-bolt neck.) The guitar has what is essentially a birdseye #4 Invader neck (1-11/16" wide at nut, 12" radius). As for the cosmetics, Ed really went all-out on this one. For starters, it has an ash body with wood binding and a quilted maple top (!!), finished in cherry sunburst on the front and gloss black on the back. (Note that this same "black back" treatment later appeared on the 1998 ASAT Classic III). Also notice the custom clear pickguard (to show off more of that gorgeous top!), the "tummy cut", and the fact that the guitar has no serial number.
