ASAT Z-2 Special Edition
Tim says, "They've a kick butt "twang monster" sound. Fat bottom end to it, as one would expect with MFD's."
Here's an interesting "behind the scenes" story:
The tortoise binding was HUGE pain in the rear to work with. The first batch of binding purchased reacted chemically with the glue and would either "cloud up" or "melt!" Arrgh! It almost killed the whole project. The second batch of binding was "brittle" and when you use it on an acoustic guitar, with smooth easy curves ~ no problem. But with a horn cutaway sharp U-Turn on an ASAT it would crack and snap! Imagine binding a body and getting all the way around to the horn and having it snap! Then you have to RESTRIP it off and start over! To say the guys at the factory wanted me dead would be an understatement! We were having a heck of a time finding a way to make it work. We called the production guy at Taylor guitars (he plays a G&L!) ~ and since Taylor makes acoustics, and G&L makes electrics ~ there was no competitive problems to overcome. Taylor provided the information on the brand to use, the kind of glue, and the "magic" you need to put it on ~ (a) buy this brand which has been cured, (b) soak it in warm water first, (c) use this type of glue ONLY, etc. etc. It worked! But the boys swore off Tortoise binding from then on out. I can't blame them for not wanting to use tortoise again ~ and it's good evidence of why sometimes going "outside the box" can be more work than it was worth! G&L had to do ALL THAT just for 10 guitars!!!
Tim goes on to say, "The guitar was a great guitar, but wasn't a huge success as I never saw the reaction to it as I thought there would be. I've two different studio musicians who record with big name talents and they LOVE the instrument. But, hey it wasn't for everyone."
