Jeff Sutton's 1992 Comanche V Signature
Jeff says: "After years of looking, I finally found a Commanche V to add to my G&L collection. According to Paul Bechtoldt, my guitar was built in mid '92 with a body and electronics left over from late 1990. It sports Leo's sig on both the headstock and the body, and as such was probably an 'employee' guitar that was sold outside of normal G&L sales channels."
"The guitar is lightweight grainy ash finished with clear coat, has an aluminum enamel finished pickguard, and sports Sperzel locking tuners. The neck fit is impossibly tight, and the guitar is very resonant and plays great. The 'dual 3' pickups (Leo's term for them, according to Bechtoldt) are amazing; the guitar sounds alot like a good MFD pickup equipped guitar, but it is dead quiet due to the humbucking arrangement. After playing this guitar for a while, I can really see why Leo was so confused that players preferred his old designs over his G&Ls!"
This particular guitar's standard headstock and 1992 build date indicate that it is likely an "employee" guitar built from surplus parts. The Comanche V is a "rarebird"; see the Registry page on this site for more information about this model.
