At some point Leo had done some work on this concept and we've started it up again. We used five S-500 pickups, with two pairs configured as humbuckers. The five-way does the usual thing, the mini-toggle does series/split/parallel of the "humbuckers" (G&L bass fans know this as K-wiring on an L-2000) and a push/pull pot does the pickup expansion duty as the mini-toggle would normally do on an S-500. PTB system is standard S-500, at least so far. We're using the outside coils on the split and got some pretty authentic S-500 tones. I think we counted 19 combinations, though quantity isn't important, quality is. And yeah, that's a lot of screws, but R&D ain't supposed to be pretty. We happened to have this Greenburst S-500 around so we decided she'll do. Didn't mean to be all fancy about it. ; )

Inspired by the classic surf sound born in Southern California, the new G&L Doheny™ takes its name from the iconic beach in the heart of Orange County where '60s surf pioneers became legends. Since those halcyon days, both music and surfing have evolved far beyond their roots, and so has the the performance of the gear.
Doheny takes the bolt-on offset-body into new sonic territory with newly developed Magnetic Field Design™ jazz pickups, the first on any production G&L. Naturally, these new pickups will invite comparison to Leo’s jumbo MFD™ ASAT® Special pickups, given they employ a narrow bobbin aperture and broad coil splay. But Doheny's MFD pickups are more about jangle than twang, just as they should be for a guitar like this. With a classic jazz bobbin aperture wrapped with traditional Formvar wire, these pickups just might be the approach Leo would have taken had he been with us a few years longer.
So what’s it like? The sound is rich in harmonics yet surprisingly full, the result of carefully researching and applying Leo’s creative work across the decades. The Doheny pickups deliver the experience fans have hoped for, with their flexibility maximized by the PTB tone system that allows echoes of yesteryear while delivering more output and range for today’s music. Took this out for a ride tonight. It was a Doheny prototype and it hangs out in the studio. The pickguard shape was being tested using pickup fiber sheet material to cut to shape. It has no finish and roughly sanded, as we couldn't wait to start using it

That one was a bit aggressive, wide open it it wants to get face-melty and wooly. Mule 2 in front is much more user friendly. I want to have that humbucker push but be able to have that MFD single coil sparkle and spank on tap.

This upgraded version of the DF Vibrato System brings an even higher level of performance to Leo Fen Date: 12/31/18 DFS VIBRATO SYSTEM
The DFS Vibrato System made its debut on the 30th Anniversary F-100 and Legacy models and is optional on other USA G&L guitars.
This upgraded version of the DF Vibrato System brings an even higher level of performance to Leo Fender’s design. Careful R&D revealed that improvements could be achieved with subtle design changes and materials selection. The result is a more focused attack, enhanced harmonic complexity and improved sustain.
Bridge Block – The bridge block (on the underside of the bridge plate) is now CNC machined from solid 1018 cold-rolled steel. This block is the primary contributor to the the DFS Vibrato System’s improved sustain and well as fostering greater harmonic content of both individual notes and chords. The material upgrade is capitalized on by modification to the string retention holes to allow more length of the string to be captured by the block, allowing more string energy to be harnessed and transferred into the body through the pivot posts and back to the strings through the saddles.
Bridge Saddles – The DFS Tremolo System utilizes a new bridge saddle that is based on Leo Fender’s original design. The string’s “contact point” on the saddle has been refined to improve intonation, reduce string wear, and enhance attack. Leo would expect that I don’t just copy an old logo that’s a little jacked, he’d expect me to “fix the damn thing.”

On this first prototype we have a conventional neck plate but the heel has been moved inboard to accommodate the 24-fret neck. That’s what I wanted for v1.0. Do the minimum messing around to a Rampage to make this work. Next I’m gonna combine the scalloped neck access like a ‘90s G&L Climax with the body edge radius following around the body heel. Four countersunk screw ferrules like we use on some basses. That’s my plan, anyway. The goal isn’t to have the best fret access, but make it a lot better without ruining George Fullerton’s awesome double-cutaway profile.

I’m gonna do something conventional to put some beef back in it but meanwhile, Ron got this Fishman setup and this guitar went from meh to rock star. I’ve been raging for like an hour and the guitar is making me play way better because I’m grooving. The neighbor even came by thinking I had some gunslinger but it was just me in full spandex attack mode. Fishman did some good work here
