Replacement Neck for Legacy

Post by Michael-GnL-Michael »

Does anyone know what necks will fit a 2010 Legacy?

I know that they are not available through G&L.

I need to know the years and sizes that are compatible.

Obviously 4-bolt #1 2010s, however, would all of the 2010 Legacy necks #1-#4 fit?

If anyone has a maple fretboard neck with the satin finish for a Legacy I would like to either buy it outright or trade my rosewood/satin for it. It is an aesthetic preference for the body color of my Legacy I would like to improve upon.

I have also considered buying another Legacy with a maple fretboard/satin neck that would look fine with a rosewood neck to swap them out, again I need to know which years to look at and if the neck size matters.

I know of these neck-related posts in the Knowledgebase:

Craig is there a 25" radius neck made by G&L or is this a typo in the Knowledgebase?

Historically as early as 1980, G&L has offered neck options on its guitars and basses. The options on the F-100 included fingerboard radius (7.5- or 12-inch) and fingerboard wood (ebony or maple). The 12-inch radius was a no-cost option on all G&L guitars (except the student SC series) beginning in 1982 and 1983.

In 1984, three neck options were offered:

#1 (1 5/8 inch nut width, 2 13/64 inch butt width, 12-inch radius)
#2 (1 5/8 inch nut width, 2 13/64 inch butt width, 7.5-inch radius)
#3 (1 3/4 inch nut width, 2 13/64 inch butt width, 12-inch radius)

From 1986 to 1991, the options were expanded to:

#1 (1 5/8 inch nut width, 2 13/64 inch butt width, 12-inch radius)
#2 (1 5/8 inch nut width, 2 13/64 inch butt width, 7.5-inch radius)
#3 (1 3/4 inch nut width, 2 13/64 inch butt width, 12-inch radius)
#4 (1 3/4 inch nut width, 2 13/64 inch butt width, 25-inch radius)
#5 (1 3/4 inch nut width, 2 21/64 inch butt width, 25-inch radius)

The #1, 2, 3, and 4 necks were no-cost options and the #5 was a $25 special order.

Beginning in 2009, G&L has expanded their neck shape offerings. See the Option pages for details on G&L's main website.

Michael,

I believe that you are incorrect on one point: G&L will make a replacement neck for you. However, they do require that you send them your existing body & neck.

Contact your local dealer, they can give you the details.

Really?

This would be only because I want a maple fretboard instead of rosewood.

Thanks.

Yes. They don't want their necks just floating around out there. Look at what people do with Fender necks. New necks aged and sold as vintage. New necks put on crap bodies and sold as Fender's.

So, that's the deal.

I recently posted a response to this post: neck widths.
Any G&L 4-bolt 6-string guitar neck will be compatible. There might be some minor issues
with the fit of the neck into the neck pocket on the body depending on the dimensions of
this specific body. There could be a small gap between the neck and the walls of the neck
pocket or the fit could be a little too tight and the pocket would then need to be opened
slightly. In the case of the fit being too tight, G&L recommends having a qualified service
tech install the new neck.

Yes there was two optional necks with the 25" radius. From 1986 to 1991, G&L did have the #4 and #5 necks and
they both had the 25" radius fretboard.

Here's the page in the January 1, 1988 Price List showing this:

Hope this helps.

Do they keep the old neck and, if so, would I be paying for the labor and a neck offset by a trade-in credit?
