ASAT "Classic S" | In April 2003 the G&L Custom Creations team decided to revisit the theme established by the ASAT Classic Three, using again a third, centrally located pickup and five position selector switch. This time, however, a reverse-wound S-500 middle pickup is installed in the middle position of an ASAT Classic. The basic idea for this kind of arrangment has been long established in the Nashville session player scene, where players often install a Strat® middle pickup in the middle position of a Telecaster® and swap the 3-position pickup selector with a 5-way unit. The G&L Custom Creations Department decided to build an instrument similar to the formula adopted by the Nashville guys but with a distinctly G&L flavor. In particular, that means a Semi-Hollow Swamp Ash body, ASAT Classic MFD pickups in place of Alnico Tele® pickups, and the S-500 MFD in place of the Strat® pickup. The CCD team decided to ice the cake with a push/pull volume pot that functions the same way as the S-500's mini-toggle switch, which enables additional pickup combinations of neck+bridge or all three pickups together. The "S" designation comes from both internal designation for this instrument, due to its use of the S-500 middle pickup, and "Session" in homage to the origin of this guitar configuration. This is a Special Build Instrument and the first 100 run were built January-March 2004. In 2004-2006, one-offs of various finishes were occasionally built. In April of 2007, the second 100 piece run began production. In 2008, due to dealer and customer demand, it was added as a standard production model as a solid Swamp Ash body with rear and arm contours. In Feb. 2011, the neck pickup was changed to match the winding/polarity of the bridge pickup. |
ASAT "Super" | The ASAT Super was inspired by the ASAT Junior which emerged from the G&L Custom Creations Department in 1998. The primary design goal of the ASAT Super was to bring substantially more girth to the bridge pickup for overdriven tones, while maintaining the characteristic sparkle of the ASAT Magnetic Field Design pickups and good balance between the output levels of the two pickups. ASAT Super shares neck pickup specifications with the G&L 20th Anniversary model, while the bridge pickup is more heavily wound with lighter gauge wire. To offset the increased impedance of the pickups and maximize available brightness, the wiring of the tone control was altered so that the capacitor would be effectively removed from the circuit when the potentiometer is in the wide-open position. The G&L Saddle-Lock bridge was chosen to maximize power, sustain and comfort. This is a Special Build Instrument and the first 60 run were built May-June 2004. As of April 2007 a total of 74 instruments have been made. January 2010: Export Sales Department requests factory to build a small quantity of ASAT Super guitars for distributors in UK and Germany. Control arrangement is altered and some different colors guitars are to be made. April 2010: Production of ASAT Super guitars destined for UK and Germany are completed. Factory reports quantities and colors as follows: UK 3-Tone Sunburst, Black 3-ply pickguard - 1 unit Tobacco Sunburst, Black 3-ply pickguard - 2 units Trans Red, Black 3-ply pickguard - 1 unit Redburst, Black 3-ply pickguard - 1 unit Vintage White (matching headstock and neck rear), Black 3-ply pickguard - 1 unit Germany 3-Tone Sunburst, Tortoise pickguard - 3 units 3-Tone Sunburst (satin finish on both neck and body), Tortoise pickguard - 1 units Tobacco Sunburst, Black 3-ply pickguard - 4 units Vintage White (matching headstock and neck rear), Tortoise pickguard - 4 units [3 extra Black 3-ply pickguards supplied] |

G&L 25th Anniversary | In celebration of G&L’s 25th Anniversary, the G&L Custom Creations team designed this special guitar to feature Leo Fender’s first pickup design for G&L, the Magnetic Field Design® humbucker. These pickups first appeared in 1980 on the very first G&L guitar model, the F-100, then appeared again in different specification in the rare short-scale G-200. During G&L’s early years, many of those F-100 guitars featured mahogany bodies, the tonewood the factory craftsmen prefer with these pickups. See the G&L 25th Anniversary: Rarebird page on this site for more information. |
ASAT Trinity Special Edition | Special Edition from 2006, designed by Buffalo Brothers, Tim and Bob Page. Based upon the ASAT S-3, but semi-hollow (without F-hole) and Maple body, 25 Trinity ASAT's were made. Also featured the remaining ASAT S-3 pickguards and each had a special logo on the end of the headstock that was designed by Mr. George Fullerton. See the ASAT Trinity Special Edition: Rarebird page on this site for more information. |
ASAT Classic Bluesboy w/Spalted Maple Top Special Build | In January 2008, the G&L Custom Creations team located some very special Spalted Maple with which to run an ultra-limited production. Spalting is a unique process which occurs when ancient logs, lying in the forest for decades, even centuries, are given character and texture by natural aging processes. Any wood is susceptible to spalting, but maple is the most commonly known. The spalting process results in the characteristic "spalting lines," which look almost like the wood was drawn on with a pen. G&L decided to use this truly unique wood to build their most popular model: the ASAT Classic Bluesboy. This fine instrument has all the same features and specifications as our ASAT CLASSIC BLUESBOY with the addition of an intricately figured Spalted Maple Top. This wood is highly regarded and sought after for its incredible tone. It includes a rear contour body, without pickguard and rear loaded controls. Clear Natural finish on body with a #1 (12" radius, 1 5/8" nut width) neck finished with Clear Gloss, non-locking tuners and Rosewood fretboard. This is a Special Build Instrument and the first 60 run were built January - February 2008. |

C.L.F. Centennial ASAT Limited Edition | In celebration of what would have been our founder Leo Fender’s 100th birthday, the people of G&L Musical Instruments, in collaboration with Phyllis Fender, have created a guitar and bass to honor Leo by incorporating certain elements of Leo Fender’s early G&L designs with a modern, heartfelt approach. The C.L.F. Centennial ASAT begins with a comfortable quarter-sawn slim Heritage “C” shape neck profile with 7.5 inch radius, a favorite among enthusiasts of vintage G&L guitars for its fast, easy playability. Authentic vintage ASAT tone comes courtesy of G&L MFD (Magnetic Field Design) large single-coil pickups, each carefully hand-wound using NOS 42 gauge plain enamel wire. Complementing the vintage ASAT tone and feel is an authentic black wrinkle powder-coated 6061/T6 cold-rolled aluminum pickguard and matching control plate; these parts offered more than a sleek appearance, they helped control RF (radio-frequency) interferences received by the electronics and single-coil pickups. These thoughtful details are brought together with contemporary G&L features, such as the non-compression truss rod and the unparalleled playability of PLEK fret dressing, demonstrating the measure of G&L’s progress and standing as testament to the enduring appeal of Leo’s final designs and his company on Fender Avenue that continues to produce them today. This is a Limited Edition Instrument and a total of 50 were built in 2009. See G&L's Custom Creations page for more details and photos. |

ASAT Deluxe Special Build | There were a few prototypes built with Western Sugar Pine bodies, one in October 17, 2011. Serial Number: CLF062947. Description: Gloss Black over Western Sugar Pine, shortened ASAT Classic bridge with radiused corners, #1 Western Sugar Pine neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Light Tint Gloss finish, 1-ply Black pickguard. G&L; pickups. Special Features: "We liked a few guitars we’d made with Western Sugar Pine bodies, so we thought we’d try using Western Sugar Pine for both the body and neck. This guitar also had R&D value in that we used a shortened ASAT Classic bridge with radiused corners, reminiscent of a modded Telecaster Jeff Beck has, as well as twin G&L exposed coil humbuckers. This guitar also has a Light Tint Gloss neck finish, for which the blend was not yet finalized at the time". Another was built in March 5, 2012. Serial Number: CLF064148. Description: Galaxy Black Metallic finish over Western Sugar Pine body, Double Faux Binding in Flame Red, shortened ASAT Classic bridge with radiused corners, Red "Zig Zag" pickguard, #4 Hard Rock Maple neck with Ebony fingerboard and Light Tint Satin finish. G&L Alnico humbucking pickups by Paul Gagon. Special Features: "Brad Whitford of Aerosmith asked us to build him an ASAT Deluxe with a clear vision of what he wanted. He described a Western Sugar Pine-bodied black guitar with red binding, something like a Batmobile color scheme. Since there wasn’t any good solid red binding available, we achieved the effect by spraying a red coat along the side of the body then taping off bands as we would actual binding before spraying a Gloss Black color coat. While we were tinkering with the idea, we tried another Western Sugar Pine body with the red double faux binding but finished in a Black metallic finish that has colored undertones to the flakes. The finish reminded us of the night sky viewed from pitch black darkness of the desert, so we came up with a name: Galaxy Black. No, we haven’t decided whether we’ll offer Galaxy Black [at that time-Galaxy Black was later added to standard finishes in 2018], but the double faux binding concept led to further development and is now standard on the ASAT Bass Tom Hamilton signature model. Bet you can guess Tom saw Brad’s ASAT. Paul Chandler had sent us a variety of cool pickguard samples, including a very cool red "zig zag" one which we decided to use on this guitar. Rounding out the R&D value of this guitar was application of a Light Tint Satin neck finish which debuted in the January 2013 price list". For some prototype photos, see: G&L Guitar Prototypes. Approximately 8-10 were made and some had Western Sugar Pine, Swamp Ash or Alder bodies. Also, one of them was made for Jerry Cantrell. At least one had a Blonde finish on Swamp Ash and it's Specification Sheet lists the Model as "ASAT Classic Deluxe" and was completed 10/30/2012. Serial Number: CLF065974. |
