2015-present MF/GC Exclusive Tribute & Placentia Series ...

Post by Craig »

Musician's Friend and Guitar Center have these exclusive G&L Tribute and G&L Placentia Series models:

Tribute Series models (Made in Indonesia):

ASAT Deluxe ‘Carved Top’ Irish Ale
Image

Note that the specs on the MF/GC website are not quite correct.
Here are the actual specs:

ASAT Deluxe ‘Carved Top’ Irish Ale

Body wood: Mahogany
Neck wood: Hard Rock Maple with tinted gloss finish
Neck dimensions: 1 5⁄8” width at nut, 12” radius
Pickups:
· Neck: G&L CS4250C (Ceramic 8 magnet, 5,000 turns per coil of 42ga wire) humbucker with chrome cover
· Bridge: G&L CW4470C (Ceramic 8 magnet, 7,000 turns per coil of 44ga wire) humbucker with chrome cover

For more about these pickups, see: List of pickups used in G&L guitars.

ASAT Deluxe Carved Top P90
Image

Note that the specs on the MF/GC website are not quite correct.
Here are the actual specs:

ASAT Deluxe ‘Carved Top’ P-90 (Musician's Friend/Guitar Center calls it "G&L Tribute ASAT Deluxe Carved Top P-90 Electric Guitar Orange Cream")
Finish: Butterscotch Blonde, rosewood fingerboard
Body wood: Alder with top binding
Neck wood: Hard Rock Maple with tinted gloss finish
Neck dimensions: 1 5⁄8” width at nut, 12” radius
Neck shape: Modern Slim C
Pickups:

· Bridge: G&L AP42105CR P-90 single coil with creme cover
Controls: 3-way toggle pickup selector, volume, tone (with push/pull for tone expansion*)
(*) What this switch is doing is placing a .0022uf capacitor across the pickups,
which lowers the resonant frequency of the pickups by approximately 2KHz.
Think of the “Wah Pedal pulled back ½ way” sound. Or the “Woman” tone
if the woman wasn’t tipping the scales at 200 pounds.

Bridge: G&L Saddle-Lock™

Steve Araujo, G&L Guitars wrote:“Placentia Series:
The Placentia Series is a new addition to the G&L family specifically developed to address new players wanting to get a high quality yet accessible G&L guitar or bass.
Why “Placentia”? G&L Guitars is located on historic Fender Avenue which runs between Fullerton and the City of Placentia. The range itself offers iconic G&L designs,
as developed by Leo Fender, but using some more traditional parts. This new range supplements our highly successful Tribute and USA ranges.”
This Series is exclusively sold by Musician's Friend and Guitar Center as Limited Editions.

Do you think this is the end of production for these really nice guitars?
Glad I got my sunburst when the getting was good.

Can you find out what the prospects of these coming back out is?

Thanks.

You will need to contact Musician's Friend and Guitar Center, as this (and the others listed in this thread) are exclusive only to them.
I don't know if they ship internationally, you need to contact them.

This is really too bad, as these are awesome guitars.

I'm so glad I got my vintage flame burst when they were all in stock. I absolutely dig this awesome guitar to the maximum.

Consider trying to find one if you can and don't hesitate if the one you desire comes up. Just my suggestion. Good luck.

I picked up an Irish Ale HB3 from MF and love it. Best $350 I've ever spent on music. Can't believe the build quality for the money. My first G&L, and VERY impressed.

Coming from the underworld (OK, the lower world of bass), I admit to some confusion re the 5-position switch and the push/pull toggle. I've Googled the best I could, came up short on explanations, and decided to bite the bullet and do the unmanly thing and ask directions.

So, here's the table where I'm trying to complete the 3rd column (with some initial guesses; please correct if in error):

Switch Position / Toggle Position / Pickups Selected

1 / Down / Neck
2 / Down /
3 / Down /
4 / Down /
5 / Down / Bridge

1 / Up / Bridge and Neck
2 / Up / All 3
3 / Up /
4 / Up / All 3
5 / Up / Bridge and Neck

Thanks in advance for your help and patience.

The push/pull expansion function is the exact same as it is on the Comanche and S-500 models. See: What is the expander switch used on many of the models?.

The mini-toggle switch is for pickup coil splitting, changing all pickups from humbuckers to single coil pickups.

They both can be used independently and together, to get you a variety of pickup tones.

Hope this helps.

Am I to understand that the limited edition olympic white Legacy Tribute does not come with the CLF 100 alnico V's as specified? this is no small detail. This was the sole reason I bought this guitar. VERY frustrating.

Yes, but if the pickups were built to G&L's specifications as they are supposed to be, they essentially would be the same as the Fullerton factory built ones.

The reason I added this post regarding the MF/GC Exclusive Tribute Models was to correct the frequent errors found on MF and GC's web pages regarding these exclusive Tribute models
and to also add specific details about unique features of many of these guitars, which I was able to get from the G&L designer, and are not listed on MF/GC websites. I had also contacted my G&L Sales
contact about these errors in the past, in hopes that they could get MF/GC to make the necessary corrections.

If you are not happy with the Tribute Legacy you got, you should contact MF or GC where you bought it and ask them to either return it or exchange it for one of the standard G&L Tribute
Legacy models they stock, as those standard Tribute Legacy do have the CLF-100 pickups built in Fullerton, CA. For the current Tribute Series model specifications, see: July 1, 2015-present Tribute Series Production Models....

Hope this helps.

My 11 year old son has been saving for several months to buy his first guitar. He recently purchased the Legacy Tribute HSS in clear red shown above. GC/MF had a fantastic sale price for their Guitar-A-Thon sale. I did help him out a little financially so he could get the Legacy instead of a Squire Strat. Anyway, we couldn't be happier with this purchase for his first guitar.

Although the pickups are not the US made pickups, I could not distinguish any difference between my US Legacy pickups and the Tribute pickups. I plugged both guitars into the same amp and they sounded nearly identical. The humbucker has a pleasant warm sound, although there is no coil slit option. But, we are OK with that.

All my G&L's are US made (I have eleven) and I've had a G&L in my collection since before the Tributes existed. I've always heard positive comments about the Tributes but never had the urge to try or own one. I guess I have been a USA made snob when it comes to guitars. Anyway, with this recent purchase, I can honestly say that I'm proud to have the Legacy Tribute HSS as part of our household collection. It is an incredible value and outperforms many other makes in the same price range.

I saw your video post of the unveiling of your son's Tribute Legacy HSS. The look on his face was pure joy!

If not mistaken, the coil splitter function is a push/pull switch on treble pot. If not there, try the other tone or volume pot.

And thanks for confirming that the these single coil pickups match the Fullerton built ones.

Craig, I checked all three knobs on the Legacy Tribute HSS. None of them function as a push/pull to split the humbucker. I guess that detail is actually correct on the GC/MF websites.

These Are well built guitars. it sounds quite good cranked through the old Champ. l look forward to getting my hands on an ASAT as well. thanks for taking the time to respond.

Hi All,

I ordered one of these and it hasn't been delivered yet.

G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Limited Edition Seafoam Green
https://reverb.com/item/43236080-g-l-tr ... een-guitar

Can someone tell me the differences between it and the not "Limited Edition" version? The guitar also looks like Mint Green in the photo. Is that the same as Sea Foam Green? LOL
This guitar is not coming from MF or GC, so is it a different type of Limited Edition?

I just like to have the correct info on my instruments.

As I understand, Speciality Traders is an authorized G&L dealer and they also buy NOS, B-stock (demo models, returns, and such) from other G&L dealers and offer
them to their customers at discounted prices. The Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy LE is likely to be from buying some Musician's Friend and/or Guitar Center overage stock. This LE model was build in Indonesia to G&L's specifications. The body wood is Poplar and the pickups are made at the Indonesia factory to G&L's specifications. The model name MF/GC used for it was "G&L Limited Edition Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy Electric Guitar Mint Green".
The US G&L factory does not offer this model in their product line, which is essentially an ASAT Classic Bluesboy Alnico. When registering this guitar in our G&L Registry use "Tribute ASAT Classic BluesBoy Alnico LE" for the model name and Mint Green (Tribute Series) for the body finish name.

Can you tell us what kind of sale (new or used) and what warranty (if any) they offered to you?

Hope this helps.

Hi Craig. Thank you for the reply!

They sold it to me as "New." It appeared new when I opened it. I assume I've got the New warranty from G&L. I hope I do. They are authorized dealers. So, there was a problem with it... the volume pot wasn't working properly. I contacted them and they asked me to open up the cavity and see if anything was amiss... I did that and didn't see anything. I even sprayed DeOxit into the pot. I work on and repair guitars, so I know my way around the "electronics" part of them. It was just a bad pot. Bad wiper? Idunno the exact problem but it "skipped" when I turned it up and down. I asked them to send me another A250K pot and I replaced it myself, today actually. They even gave me $10 back for my labor. :)

This is what I have learned about it:

Serial number: 190606793
Production year: June 2019 (serial: 06793)
G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy
Crafted in Indonesia (by Cor-Tek)

Neck Pickup: (7.87k, 4.0H)
Bridge Pickup: (7.04k, 2.88H)
Weight: 8.33 lbs

Compared to my Fender Affinity Tele, the neck pickup is much darker, but does not have as much deep bass (warmth). The top frequencies are not there at all either. For now, I much prefer the Affinity Neck pickup and may eventually find a replacement for the G&L neck pickup. I got the humbucker, because I wanted that warmth. So far, I'm not hearing it in the G&L. But the guitar plays like a dream. It wants to stay in tune! I like the feel of the neck after I gave it a coat of Watco Rejuvenating oil and rubbed it down with 0000 steel wool.
