New, non owner here

Howdy Folks,

Little about myself, I am Kyle, bassist of moderate ability and professional hack guitarist. ( if you are interested in seeing how hack my work is here http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... dID=963521 ) I enjoy music from across the board, as long as it wasn't mainstream after 1990 abouts. Due to this diversity I try to play about every style, this shows up in my music, amongst other odd mind babies of mine. My favourite band is probably Rush, infact I am seeing them again, along with a show of Iron Maiden w/ Dream Theater this summer.

I am a crazy canuck, and currently live in Hamilton, Ontario. I am a recent alumnus of McMaster university in Civil Engineering. I finished my undergrad in December and am currently working in an aggregate lab. Next week I begin my masters of applied science, where I will be conducting a thesis revolving finite element analysis of geomaterials (soils). Should be a fun time.

My axes are carvins. At least the ones I care about. I have a LB75 and a C66C, as well as a DC135 that lives in a case. I do not have a guitar amp, and instead run a GNX 3000 into my fender BXR bass amp for the time being. I am saving up for a Mesa Mark V amplifier, and will probably buy a 212 from avatar to go with it.

And why am I on the G&L forum you may ask? Well that is a tricky one. I recently started taking up chicken picking. I am tired of working on shred speed, bored too, so it is time for a style change. I tend to hop between styles in my practicing, they all benefit one another in some way anyway. So the quest for chicken picking ability has led me to an impasse. I would like a new guitar just for chicken picking. What would one chicken pick with? A telecaster. Fender instruments are not for me, I have been spoiled with perfection by Carvin (my C66 can literally go under .008" action without buzz, i found that out thanks to canadian seasonal shift har har!), which lead me to the quest for the perfect tele. It needs a wider neck, fenders are far too narrow. It preferably has a flatter radius (min 12).

So I go to a music store and it deals G&L, another 'good' not overly popular brand I've heard. Never played one of theirs in my life. I picked off an ASAT classic to 'try' asked for a pick and sat down. Didn't even plug the bugger in, as if it can't compete on feel alone with my C66 why bother right? Fastest I have ever adapted to a different neck, within 30s I was playing without snags, even on a 7.5" radius, unheard of!. Had I not bought an engagement ring that afternoon (ow my pockets) I surely would have left with that guitar.

So now that the initial wow has worn off I still realize I need an amp first, and to get better at chicken picking of course (any recommendations of songs , exercises etc will be used excessively!). When the time comes I plan to make a custom order, in trans orange, the #3 wide neck with a 12" radius, locking tuners. Not sure if ASAT or ASAT special, but if they will get me a special w/o the pickguard I will be singing. I am hoping that by the time I order they will have SS frets, but if they do not, I still don't think it would stop me from buying one.

An interesting tidbit about my guitar playing is I play with Agate and Jade picks. I have one of each. The jade is modeled after a dunlop 'sharp' and the agate was supposed to be one of those also, but the tip was botched. I got them to make it to a point too, and not is is a cross between a traditional and a sharp, my go to pick. I of course took special care to eliminate any over picking before I went the agate route, I don't want to imagine how fast mine could scratch up a finish, they are literally pointed.

Welcome to the forum! Love the C66. Been eyeing one of those myself. How do you like it? How was the order process? Concerning the amp, have you considered the Carvin's? Once again welcome!

Well he's trying to introduce himself and you mistook that for post-failure geomaterial models? I guess your assumption would be that one can model properly the transition from continuous to discontiguous behavior in said geomaterials... That is a challenging problem.

See what I mean? Those darn geomaterial failure models! No MFD's.

You guys are fun, for now, I ignore any of that, I am sure it will all make sense in time, we don't get much of it in undergrad. I wanted to go into structures like all sane people, however I chose the adviser I liked, this lead to going into geotechnical. The draw was the heavy modeling and analysis, as I can design fine, analysis is lacking in undergraduate studies. Not to mention I am a masochist when it comes to being challenged. Love 'impossible' tasks. Big fan of powerlifting too, although my lifts aren't what they were before flat feet (which I have fixed I have arches again!, and de quervains tenosynovitis ((also mostly fixed!)) I do some crossfit style training too.

I have never had an issue with Carvin orders (except them shipping them without telling me, but I usually call day after my card to make sure and true up if need be). The c66 is an interesting beast, spec wise not much thicker than a DC, but it feels more real, less wide too, but its weird, feels much bigger. It has stock pickups in it, C22B and J. I love them, decent harmonics, good tones, not thick or thin, very applicable everywhere, even some mild quack when split. It has Stainless Jumbo frets, I love jumbos and consequently play with a very light left hand. I have never played a comfier guitar, but you need different axes for different things.

As for Carvin amps I was looking into the X-100. For the price it cannot be beat, but I would rather go all out and ignore price and get what I think would be better the first time. Permitting it gets passed in my live demo. Another thing that dissuades the Carvin is I cannot try the amp before I buy it. Due to the diversity of music I play (classic rock, Iron Maiden, Rush, country, Satriani, and the list goes on) I want to get an amp that I think will be able to handle the whole table plausibly. The Mark V with its 3 voices / each of the 3 channels from demos sounds like it could do everything I need it to and then some. I live in an apartment, so another awesome feature in my opinion is the 90/45/10W switches, it will most likely live in 10W mode and still never get cranked inside, but it will be able to get close. The X-100 has 100/50/25, 25 won't get anywhere near topped out inside.

So essentially the Mark V presents me with a low watt practice amp, great voices and lots of them, as well as the ability to play out if the whim strikes, although I prefer to play out as a bassist, I am more technically proficient on a bass (although my recordings may not represent that as they are guitar centric). I also have an easier creative flow when bass playing, more familiar with the neck (damn B string on guitars always throwing me off) etc.
