23rd October - Happy Birthday Brunch

It's my birthday today so I thought I'd jump in for lunch duty

Got up at 4:30am for work, and had technical difficulties with a video conference around 6:30, things seem to have leveled out now and I'm sitting down for breakfast. I almost always get the same thing when I work at the hospital, a slice of French toast with 2 sausage and some homefries, washed down with a hot cup of tea. Normally I order eggs if I go out to breakfast but I have learned to avoid the powdered eggs that most hospitals and hotels serve. Anyway, that's the start to my day should be out by 2:30-3pm ish, most likely I'll skip lunch in favor of birthday dinner

My 3yr old daughter woke up briefly before I left this morning, said happy birthday and asked if I would like a new toy
Absolutely I do! But I spent what I had on the '84 sc-2 so I guess that was sort of an early gift to myself, I also just received a new 10" speaker from weber for my vibrolux. So my plan for this afternoon is to clean/polish/re-string the new guitar, install the new speaker and enjoy them for a bit. Then some family activities followed by dinner. We shall see what the next few days brings in the way of new toys



How about you, would you like a new toy?

I've been reading a lot about the Fallout lately andI like that g&l is doing more with the sc body type. I would consider custom ordering one rather than going with the sc2 only because I have two guitars with the large mfd's so that ground is covered. The only thing I'm not fond of is the pickguard. It's not bad but I prefer it without, is it possible to order it with no pg and rear routed controls ? What are your opinions on the fallout, anyone played one yet ?
Hoping an LE2 will still be around when I'm ready to pull the trigger on that wish list item.

LIke you, I am interest in the fallout but would like one without the pickguard. I think the P90 would be nice although I have the P90s covered pretty well. I really like my SC-2 and that is a nice body style. Years ago I had a Fender Mustang bass, same concept, and it was not a good gigging bass but very sweet for recording. I will lay in the weeds on the Fallout until a model without a pickguard becomes available.

I like the fallout but, like others, would prefer it didn't have a pickguard.

As far as the Le-2 goes, it's been nearly 6 months since ordering began - still not even a picture. Personally, I have given up on the Le-2 & have cancelled my order. I'm sure it will be a great guitar, but there are a lot of great guitars out there.

HBD...I am waiting for the Fedex man to bring a twin to the 1998 ASAT Classic that I gave to my son...why is it that you're the last stop when your guitar is on the truck for delivery...

Anyway, we'll be spending our night the same way; hope I don't have to set it up!

Lunch today was a Lebonese galette which was very very tasty. I think the pick guard on the fallout looks great ! I 'm surprised that most comments about the pick guard has been negetive. I'm a big fan of the SC body style in general and a Fallout or your latest acquisition would complement my modest stable quite nicely. I hope that LE-2 makes an appearance as I would love to see one in the flesh .

Happy birthday Dave, I hope your wife shows up with a '66 Princeton for you! Total bummer having to eat hospital food on your day but I guess that dinner will taste amazing after it.

I always want new toys. Today I'm picking up a USACG Jaguar neck for next to nothing which will be my next project - a cheap as possible, good sounding Jaguar. I haven't ever owned a short scale guitar before so it'll be something different

As for the Fallout, I'd prefer it if the pickups were the other way around - P90 bridge, humbucker neck. I don't like the combination of humucker bridge, SC neck as I like the neck sound to be thicker than the bridge, which I like twangy, but that's just my preference. I'd also prefer a smaller pick guard and if it had the larger SC2 headstock. I do think it's cool that they're trying other stuff though, and it seems to be a very popular model so good for them.

If I came across a Fallout I'd give it a try, but it's nowhere on my wish list. The early SC models are my favorite G&Ls, and the couple of times I've gotten to try a current SC-2 I've liked them (but not enough to buy either one). A Belair Green finish might have made the GAS kick in a bit more. The Fallout just hasn't grabbed my attention. I think it's the pickguard that puts me off.

I've gotten a couple of new toys lately, so I'll be holding off on any more for a while. The last one was a PRS bass that arrived on Monday. I had been kicking myself for missing one at GC last year, and had a trade offer on another one fall through on TalkBass a month or two back. This one showed up on eBay last week at a very reasonable starting bid, and I turned out to be the only person who bid on it. It's my first PRS, and I have to say that it's just about as good as a G&L. The flamed maple "ten top" is gorgeous, and the finish is almost as good as my '99 L-1500 and '00 L-2000. The bird inlays are a very nice cosmetic touch. The thing that really surprised me is the bridge, which appears to be a copy of a Saddle Lock. I'm not sure whether it has a boss set into the body, though. I'll post some non-G&L porn if anybody's interested.

That SC-2 is a very sweet looking new toy indeed. Enjoy your afternoon testing it out with the new speaker. The speaker will need to be broken in of course - you'll need to explain this to your wife so you get plenty of quality Dave time on it.

I'm on board with the Fallout. I appear to be one of the few that really, really likes the new pick guard. I've always liked the SC-2 shape, but it looked unfinished to me without a guard. I would like the option for a P90 in the bridge position as well. I've spent too much time already doing Fallout mock ups on the AG&B generator. Cosmetically speaking, Margarita metallic with a black guard is my current fave.

Looking at the build you posted, I realize what I don't like about the pickguard: it's the curve and point down past the controls. As a die-hard fan of the original SC models, that point just seems to go against the guitar's traditional lines IMO. It's also an element of pointy-ness on a very non-pointy guitar. I think I would like it a lot more if the guard followed the lines of the original black control plates.

I personally don't like that pickguard design either.
I was forced to put a pickguard on my SC-1 to cover all the routing due to the pickup moves and changes. I really like the way it turned out.

I see where you're coming from Ken. I tend to think of the curve you're describing as kind of like an artistic flourish at the end of a brush stroke, and a nice counterpoint to the 'teat' on the headstock. If I was more into the '80s style G&L's it would probably bother me for departing from tradition. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Philby, I am with you on Margarita Metallic with a black pickguard. I did not like the Margarita at first but after seeing it on a couple of guitars with the neck and pickguard of my preference I would get something in that color if I was to buy 5 more guitars. (Does that make sense?). Mine would be Margarita Metallic, 1-ply black pickguard and either a maple or ebony fretboard.

The shape of the Fallout pickguard did not bother me at all until I read this thread and the naysayers contaminated my mind.

My list of good looking pickguards is very short. In no particular order, the traditional S-style, the traditional Tele/ASAT Classic. That's it for perfection. There are some variations that still look good but these two are perfect.

The Fallout pickguard reminded me of the Fender Thinline in some way. If it was the point stopping me I would have Pickguard Heaven make one according to my template with that rounded. I would want a 3-ply cream pickguard. Generally I like the look of the Fallout. The pickguard doesn't bother me although I will notice that point from now on.

What my eyes go to is the bridge humbucker ring. I know having it results in a matched size to the P90 but I think it makes the pickup disproportionately large in the SC body. There have been mismatched sized large pickups on guitars for years. It is not uncommon to see a P90 with a humbucker sans ring, regardless of where the two were positioned (bridge or neck). IMO a humbucker on an S-style guitar should not have a pickup ring like the HB Legacy models. The SC body looks like there is less body real estate than the Strat/Legacy and definitely less than an ASAT. So the Fallout would be the one G&L I would make a couple of changes to. That makes the Tribute Fallout very appealing as a sort of lab rat.

Toys, I have purchased two guitars in the past 35-day period. I am going to think about a Fallout Tribute though.

They've only built a couple of bass models. Mine is their take on the Jazz, which ends up being very close to a G&L JB. They were made for about five years in the early 2000s. The one I would really like to score is their "Bass IV", which was built from the mid-80s through the early 90s. Those have three pickups along with a dummy coil under the bridge, which makes every switching option hum-cancelling. They get very little love or attention, except from reggae/dub players. They have a couple of signature models out now IIRC, which retail well up into the thousands.

I'll try to get some pics tomorrow evening and post them in the General Music thread.

Had a weird streak of mishaps yesterday, both of my video conferences in the morning had tech problems, then the ice tea I picked up on my way to the office tasted like coffee (I hate coffee ) ended the evening by locking my keys in the car (actually my wife did that but hey it happens) in the parking lot of the restaurant with a tired/cranky 3 yr old

Still it was a good day overall though. Had a nice dinner, ran out of time to get the speaker installed but I did clean up the SC-2, despite the pics she has a few dings and some checking as well as some grime on the neck. Got the grime off, the paint is smooth and shiny, put on a fresh set of strings and she's ready to go for later today when I, hopefully, get that speaker in. Keep your eyes open for a tone report in the near future.
