LR Friday September 6, 2013 - Earshot Jazz Festival

Fri Sep 06, 2013 7:14 am

Hi gang,

Last day of the week already!

Lunch
Mama's Mexican Kitchen. Yes, again. The only reason I already know at this early hour is because I'll attend a farewell lunch for a colleague of mine. You never know whether she'll readi this, so: All the best for your future Abi. It was a pleasure working with you!.

Seattle is a wonderful place. It is small enough to still be considered a village (at least by me) with a lot of freestanding houses, but big and populous enough that a lot of stuff is happening culturally. For instance, there are several concert series every summer: Chateau Ste. Michelle, Marymoor Park, and Zoo concerts, although with the kind of thunderous weather we had this week I wouldn't want to be at an outdoors venue now. And I don't even count the concert series at many of the nearby casinos. Then there is the Gorge, White River Amphitheatre, Paramount Theatre, Moore Theatre, Showbox, and a slew of other 'ordinary' concert venues. with (almost) all of the big names coming through. And whereas my wife and I usually go to 8-12 concerts each summer, this year was not interesting enough. We saw Counting Crows at Ste Michelle, Hall and Oates (I love LFDH) at Marymoor, John Mayer at the Gorge, and nothing at the Zoo. I'll have to fix my concert dependence this October and November by seeing 30 jazz concerts in 45 days attending the Earshot Jazz Festival. And there is a lot of good stuff on the calendar. The Keith Jarrett Trio performing one of only 4 concerts in the US this year, Philip Glass, Brad Mehldau, Dave Douglas, and a kind of artist residency by Bill Frisell performing in 4 different settings; amongst them one with Charles Lloyd. And lots of artist from regions like Cuba, Brasil, India/Pakistan, Africa, and Europe. A wonderful eclectic program I'm so looking forward to.
Non-G&L question
For those playing gigs, any exciting engagements on the horizon? And for those merely attending gigs, any exciting ones you look forward to? And pop quiz: what does LFDH mean?

As I wrote yesterday, unfortunately no Savannah Bluesboy 90 talk about yet. That one will have to wait until a later stint. Lets skip the G&L question and see if I can come up with a suitable replacement ...

Yesterday I mentioned the Hyatt estate in connection to the logs Dale had. As it turns out, I had the opportunity to make a deal for Lacewood #1 with Ken Hyatt, Dale's son. For reasons outside mine and Ken's control it unfortunately didn't happen. But strangely and completely independently from these events, I got the chance to get Lacewood #26. Some of us might remember Gary Maki (JoseyWales) posting his happy tidings he had been able to score this exceedingly rare instrument on eBay. At the time I was in the Netherlands for business and missed out on the auction. Still, built for shop foreman John Rodriguez, assembled by Gene Englehart, one of only 7, here it is:

Not withstanding these date stamps in the pocket and on the neck heel

which are both from before Dale Hyatt retired on November 4, 1991 this is one of the first BBE-era instruments finished on November 11, 1991. This instrument is just drop-dead gorgeous both visually as well as sonically (which unfortunately I am not able to demonstrate). So here is just some more porn.

One interesting detail is the neck plate:

Notice the hyphens!

OK, that'll be it for the week. Or maybe not. Still contemplating another one tomorrow. But maybe I should keep that one for the next Open Mic.

Jos, that Lacewood is stunning. Triple bound, gold plated hardware, how could it be any better? You sure have an awesome collection of Asats. How many more can you come up with. Ken is also well on the way. I am fortunate not to have GAS.

We do have an interesting year coming up. Several places have told us they want to book us every month, and we continue to pick up new ones. What do you do? I am not a kid any more. We try to behave like kids but it is always a 2 day recovery. So it will be interesting. I seldom attend concerts. I do buy live video performances as they are my favorites. Most of my heros are gone. Great week by the way Jos-- Darwin

Beautiful looking guitar. Unfortunately, its been another busy week for me. I just did a quick read to catch up on the lunch reports. As expected, it looks like had had a fascinating week of reports and a wonderful collection of guitars.

It's been a slow year concert-wise for me. But in a couple of weeks I'll be seeing Steve Morse and Joe Satriani. Looking forward to that.

LFDH == Live From Daryl's House.
Love it too. He's had a broad range of guests. He and his band certainly are versatile.

Darwin, there is some rare stuff still out there but that all has relative low priority, higher prices, and low probability to run across. But I'll tell you what I am missing for sure right now. You might have noticed that beyond the Z-2 I do not have any Z-pup ASATs, i.e. Z-3 and/or Will Ray Signature. And I'm still looking for a nice ASAT Classic Custom. In all of these cases I'm looking for certain years (2004/2005 for the Z-3/Will Ray and 2008 for the Classic Custom) and appearance. Want to talk about your gold hardware semi-hollow Z-3? ;) :happy0007:

But in short, it isn't that many anymore. 'til you hear about an ASATCat that is .... Or other oddities. Ugh, does it ever end?

And Jeff's the winner. :happy0065:

My favorite episodes in no particular order: Diane Birch, Smokey Robinson, Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren. Most of these I have watched more than once. Incredible soulful band that really turned me around on my opinion of Hall&Oates and Daryl Hall in particular. I think they perform better versions of their '80s hits right there in that barn than the original. And I loved Tommy 'T-Bone' Wolk and was so saddened by his passing in February 2009. The new guy is good, but doesn't have the same charisma nor is capable of tying in the food theme that runs in parallel to the music.

P.S. As an example, I only learned like 2 weeks ago Daryl wrote Paul Young's hit 'Everytime you go away' which was huge in the Netherlands in the summer of '85. As well as my introduction to a guy named Pino Paladino, but that is a separate story ...

I watched that a few times, I think it was the one with Todd that I realized I was watching people eat a roasted pig ,
not what I will spend my time with.

Sorry ... Music should be sacred ( No, I'm not religious) more often than it is ,oh, and Life too...everyone sucks the big one. bye all...No more LR's ( or LFDH's )for me.
..."oh weeeeeellllll"... to quote PG

Very nice end to a great week Jos!

Lunch: Jimmy Johns Ham and Provalone with oatmeal cookie, BBQ chips and pickle.

Non-G&L Question: No gigs really scheduled. Jamming with Nick Jaffe next week, that is exciting!

G&L: I figured Gary's Lacewood would end up in your collection. Nice to see it is goo company. ;)

I agree Elwood, not sure roasting a pig undermines it however. What do I know? I had a Ham sandwich for lunch. That said, I did wash my hands before picking up my SC-2. :happy0007:

Besides, the sacred and the religious meet far more seldom than they ought.

That Lacewood is beautiful, Jos. A lot of Australian woods are incredibly attractive to look at, and come at a significant premium.

I can't afford big concerts at the moment, they're so expensive here. It's rare to pay less than $100 for a concert, and they're more often than not held in a sports arena that sounds absolutely terrible and you're seated so far from the performance that you may as well be watching it on TV. I get out to "grass roots" gigs in bars though, and see some good, some bad and some ugly stuff.

I do have some exciting stuff coming up in the next few months with the soul band I play with at a very good local venue that is nearly always full BUT has a tight steep staircase to load in/out on. I ended up quitting the country band a couple of weeks back, which felt great. We were playing far too many '80s rock songs for my liking in depressing venues, and even though those gigs paid for 3 new guitars and a significant percentage of my rent in the last financial year it was getting me down.

Thanks for an entertaining week of LRs

I'll try to explain someday with some wicked Vegan Death Metal lyrics against the heaviest G&L sounds you've ever heard.
It'll be about a year, so lots of time to reflect until then.
There was another guy who washed his hands alot..I think the Stones mentioned him in a song.

alright, back to writing that album.
play healthy,
