Thursday's LR - June 27,

good thursday(and night) wishes to all,

I'm listening to Fly by Night...love the crispiness in ths album.
Before that was Caress of Steel, next up is probably Hemispheres.

D and Dsus4 , (first chords in Fly by Night) were the two chords I showed Stoney from Pearl Jam when he asked me to show him some things...the boy has done well !!

I wore out the LP's and then the cassettes when I was out and about.
I wouldn't mind a little warble once in a while...these remasters are soooo tight .

What albums rekindle that spark in your soul ?

I hope someday to make some recordings that might sooth rough times for others.
( I'll admit when I crank Master of Puppets...I'm probably the only who feels soothing relief,
I make sure the cats aren't around)

I'm about to start swapping tubes in the MK l Boogie...I'll let y'all know if I find the bad one (fingers crossed).

G&L porn to follow...But I had to keep the train rollin'.

I want to do a medley of train songs...Hendrix,Jimmy Cliff, etc.
I'd love some help compiling some possibilities.

Good album! My favorite Rush stuff, is everything up through "Hemispheres", when they were very much a progressive hard rock band, bordering on being a full blown metal band. Want a workout? Play "La Villa Strangiato", or my fave of the "Hemispheres" album:

Moving Pictures was the last Rush album I bought.

Camera's Eye and Witch Hunt has a nice loose mojo to it.

Yuppers! I played in a band with a drummer, who wanted to do "YYZ" (I would have gladly played that song), unfortunately, none of the other band members wanted to give it a try.


Good Luck with the tube swap in the Boogie, Elwood. Hopefully that's the problem (most of the time it is). Don't forget that most Mesas run fixed bias in the final/power amp section. As a result, using matched tube sets is pretty much a must, to keep from cooking out tubes. Randall Smith did that (made the amps fixed bias) on purpose, so that a tube change was easy (no screwing around with adjusting the bias) as long as you bought his matched tube sets. You see, back in the 70s & early 80s, hardly anybody sold tubes as matched sets, so anytime you changed the finals in a guitar amp, it had to be re-biased, to even out the electrical load between the tubes, and prevent any tubes in the set from getting overstressed, due to handling the lion's share of the electrical load, and burning out (this was also the case for tube radio transmitters and transceivers - you needed the neutralize the finals when you changed them to avoid them possibly going into out of control oscillation, and wrecking the radio). You bought Randal Smith's matched tube sets, and you were good to go. Nowadays of course, getting matched tube sets is pretty easy to do.

But of course! Martin Barre is a VERY underrated as a guitar player. When I was a young 'un (during my college days in the 80s), I used to enjoy playing "Nothing is Easy" off of the Stand Up album (which is still my favorite 'Tull album), on guitar - there's some great lead guitar playing on that song!

I have a Boogie F30, ok, it's not in the same league as your Mk I, but I simply bought a full retube kit on eurotube and it brought a new life and voice to my amp (without rebiasing of course).

That's the problem with music - all too often people miss the really good stuff on albums, because they won't buy the album, or can't/won't get past the "if it's not a hit, it's not good" mindset. Sorry, but IMO the hits (both past and present) we get exposed to (oftentimes for the umpteen millionth time on classic rock stations [which really gets old]), are often some of the weakest songs on an album. But, they cater to the least common denominator (and as a result best match up to the "one size fits all" model), and as such are judged the most radio friendly.

Martin Barre is such a solid musician, really great.

I'd like to put up a big vote of appreciation for Peggy, too; one of the meatiest and most enjoyably musical bass players of the 70's (and ever since!) Lots of big-hearted good feeling in his playing; plus he's always in his own real character and that's good to listen to, a gent and not a "star".

Thanks for the Jerry Garcia and Dead links! My vinyl Workingman's is still around, just saw it in the mid of my house move. Their reputation is sometimes now so coloured by the irresponsibility of that era, but really there is some great music performance going on.
Garcia is so sweet, isn't he? Great abilities of managing tender tone with confident delivery, imaginative and grounded in a wide awareness off music he loved. Opened my mind to new musical attitudes and aspirations all those decades ago, and it's good to be reminded of it now; that experience has stayed with me ever since.

One of the questions I had considered was What bits of past recordings are just magic in your eyes?

There are a couple on dead albums that I am fascinated by.
Of course the peak of the solo at Terrapin Station (was that mentioned yet?),
....and the sound amalgum on Anthem of the Sun (tenderfoot for quadlibet?).

Others that come to mind right now are the intro to Have a Cigar. Some very bizarre engineering
of the rhodes, bass and ?? alot of tasty phasing.

...and Fripps "meow" guitar on "Cat Food".
Discipline, the whole album ; pretty much is an amazing thing. I like it

I'll put up some dead related stuff in a misc thread. This one is geting pretty heavy with all the Vids.

One of many treasured moments of Garcia again - the mexican / diminished solo in Ship of Fools. One of my biggest melodic spine-tinglers of young musicality. Garcia could be so expressive thanks to being so humble, never a smartass.
