Welcome back!

Thanks to all who responded yesterday - I appreciate it and I enjoyed your posts. I apologise for not getting back to some of you - its been busy as and I'm pulling double duty today on the reports today as tomorrow will be spent outside all day in a paddock with cows, horses, sheep etc... the above shot will give you some idea of what it'll look like tho that photo is from up north a few hours and I'll be bout an hour south of Auckland...


Ok - Got a lot to cover so lets get started...

Lunch today was some kind of veggie dish my good friend Barry made along with some Lemon Honey Ginger Tea. Not sure exactly what it was but it tasted Fab. Barry's from the UK - he's an actor, an astrologer/ wizard and a total kick to hang with.

Here's another cool Leo-era ASAT from 1990. I bought a couple months back off ebay - it was listed as possibly being a Prototype.
SOme folks think so, others don't. I'm unsure but could care less b/c it has heaps of Leo-Goodness, is light and resonant(maple body)
plays/sounds great and has some MOJO to boot. I got the case here locally for $15 - Sweet - eh?






1990 seems to me to have been a magical year for G&L's - I've owned 4 ASATs from that year and all were outstanding.
Do you have a favourite year? If so, why?

Next up -

I've met some really cool people since moving here and have made some dear friends. I have to say Kiwi's are very warm and friendly - at least the ones I've met! Funny tho, a lot of them think I'm Canadian - Probably b/c I've been here awhile and I've lost some of my American accent. I meet folks from all over the world here and not having had travelled much prior to my arrival I find it really interesting. I've met a few Americans as well and one has become a close friend and a mentor to me.
He and his wife teach Yoga and they are wonderful teachers. They headed up an International Yoga Conference earlier this year in NZ and one of the local news stations did a story on them.

Any of you older cats make Monterey or Newport Pop, Woodstock or ??? Got stories - let's hear em!

Well, not so much older (I'm a tender 46) , or much of a story...but growing up in Seattle allowed
me a few cool experiences. I got to know Jimi's Dad (met him on Hole #3 at Jefferson golf course),
and got to check out some of Jimi's older instruments. No strats there at the time but there was a
Acoustic brand 'Black Widow' semi-hollow electric. The ones that Semie Mosely had a hand in the design,
with the snap-on pad on the back. I think there was a bass there too, short scale IIRC...don't remember the brand.

I went to school with Stone...he was always smiling and clowning around ( and I imagine still is ). I taught him the first position D and Dsus2 chords when he was just learning how to play.

It sounds like they had alot of fun on the recent BRAD tour.

I've heard some good Heart stories from local folks who partied hard in the 70's.
We were remodeling a duplex about the same time the Wilson sisters were remodeling their
capitol hill property and I almost got the pink bathroom sink and toilet , that would have made
for an interesting rock and roll themed powder room...with MOJO !!

Apparently those PA bins were built by a local NW carpenter/sound guy/audio enthusiast ,
and some of the cabs (probably the upper) were loaded with dummy speakers. That makes sense
considering it's all right there behind them .
Somestupid with a heavy finger pushed what drivers were there toooo hard and it caught fire and went up
in flames. I think it was at discovery park.

Heart is playing the puyallup fair this year...not my scene....good to see them playing their songs
live still...really great material.
Didn't you do a show with Spot playing Barracuda ? ...that was fun vid to watch.



Not sure who else is in the band with them currently...I heard the 'heart by heart' band was a bit of a mess. My friend was FOH engineer at a casino with them a couple weeks ago and he said it was too much guitar all the time ....ouch : /

I see that guitarist is playing one of those 30,000 year old guitars...what is name ( it's early, I'm lazy)
of them?? Have you played one since you've been in NZ ? Those bodies are sooooo cool looking ,
they got add some snap to the notes being so dense and relatively stiff I imagine.

hey, woodstock etc was before my time, well I was 6! Never actually made it to any festivals over here either. most line ups now dont really do it for me now plus I hate the sound at outdoor gigs.. it doesnt really work in Scotland with the weather!! Been to afew outdoor shows , stadioms, castles etc but no festivals.
Loved the Statler Brothers.. loved the song in "Pulp Fiction" never saw the performers before

KF, Beautiful ASAT. Did you install the neck pickup?

I was too old for the hot spots in the 70's. We had never even heard of drugs although we did get into the cold ones when we were playing. We even dressed up for gigs with sport coats and such. We had to be respectable or mom wouldn't their daughters near us!

I really like a lot of 1990 G&L's as well. Fit and finish was spot on.

That Asat will haunt me until it's back here.It's one I let get away.

No year for G&Ls. No year for any of my axes. If I am buying something production I tend to make it mine as much as possible, and my stable only grows incrementally if at all. So I tend to gravitate towards new anyway. Construction methods only improve with time, fortunately. There is also that whole passing fit where I rarely go to a company for more than 1 or 2 instruments, then more on. I don't buy into their sound, or any brand loyalty. I go to who makes what I want and get it, every time. Recently this has lead to some music mans in the make on both sides of the frequency spectrum.

Alvin Lee, indeed.

I don't have a favorite year, but I would say I am partial to the mid-90's Legacy bodies, up until about 2000. I like the 3-bolt neck; after about y2k they start getting bigger and thicker.

Alvin Lee was terrific at Woodstock. But so were Canned Heat and Santana. And the group that really tore it up was Sly and the Family Stone. Pure soul, pure energy.

The absolute nicest guy I've ever met in the biz was Glen Campbell. I got to jam with him for about 15 minutes back in the summer of '67. Ann and Nancy went to a rival High School, I used to book Ann's band for our dances; she's my age. Sweetheart, driven.

And I did run into Courtney Love and her entourage one time. Rude, foul-mouthed, obnoxious: there's a
reason her band was named Hole, and that's what she is.

Favorite year: I don't have one favorite year, but the four G&Ls I have from 1986 are standouts. I am also partial to the 'hog bodied L1K and L2KE basses from '80 and '81. The one guitar I keep circling back around to as my favorite is a '98 ASAT Classic. That seemed to be a magic year in terms of innovation (the first Custom Creations) and overall fit and finish of production instruments. I am still kicking myself for letting a good deal on a '98 L-1500 pass me by earlier this year. If it shows up for sale again I will pull the trigger immediately. My '00 L-2000 fretless is in the same league as the '98 ASAT Classic in terms of fit and finish and overall playability.

I didn't reach concert-going age until the early 80s, and never made it to any festivals. As far as experiences with professional musicians, I used to jam occasionally in my teens with Fountains of Wayne lead guitarist (and current ASAT player) Jody Porter. He was a couple of years younger than me, but my best friend's brother played in a band with him so we saw each other pretty frequently.

I like the later Leo-era stuff, 87-91.

Went to a few big gigs at County Stadium in mid to late 70's... Pink Floyd Animals tour, The Grand Slam Jam, which was Nugent, Heart, Foreginer, etc...
Saw Heart again later with (insert drum roll) The Joe Perry Project opening.
Woodstock - To me the best Guitar moment is Pete Townshend gently tossing the SG he just played/abused into the crowd when The Who finished...

1984 is my favorite G&L. Bi cut necks, smaller headstocks, black crinkle hardware. The L1000 was still on the prowl, as was the El Toro. I could maybe be persuaded to another favorite Leo year, but at present, 1984 is the one.

...and the first-style SB-2. How could I forget that?

I have a friend who went to school with him too and she said he was pimpin' some rockstar threads & hats back in the 6th & 7th grade...
I ran into Mr. Hendrix one X-mas eve in the coffee isle of grocery store in Skyway.... I looked at him and politely said "You're Jimi's Dad" - he just grinned.

Great Heart Vid & info - didn't know Ann could play flute! I used to do deals with Rick Erickson who as you probably know was Heart's amp tech for many years. Yeah, I saw a clip of the heart to heart band and yeah it was kinda sad...

I haven't tried one but I'd like to! Indeed - Char is made of pretty dense swamp ash and she really cuts thru live - I can only imagine how these sound!

John - yeah outdoors shows can really sound crap not too mention crap weather which Seattle is known for. The best outdoor gig I attended was Pear Jam's Drop in the Park show back in '92 - had a blast.
Would LOVE to visit Scotland - just watched Ken Loach's lastest The Angel's Share - great flick!


Darwin - Thanks! No - I got it that way... I don't really dig the sound tho - its a Scahller but I don't think that matters much... I can't adjust the height much b/c the high E will fret out on it. - am thinkin of turning it round ala Peter Green and/or removing it, slapping a sticker over the hole in the p/g and wiring it up like Fender Esquire.

I hear ya - I learned long ago not to let a good deal go even if it means paying the extra $(See below...) I believe you make up the diff in the long run and avoid that terrible feeling of regret.

Brock - 1984 - good to know.... I missed a cool blonde SB-2 at the Midway Swapmeet back in 2003! I was selling there that day and had walked around prior in the morning so as not miss any deals. By 11Am or so its a pretty safe bet that all what's there is already put out. I don't know how it happened but a friend and his wife show up late around Noon and say Hi to me. I'm thinking he's wasting time if he's expecting to find any deals (which was the reason for his being there - he ran a Music GO round store at the time)
Bout 2 hours later he swings back around with a black G&G case grinning ear to ear... found the SB-2... got it from 2 teenagers for....
$75 That was the 2nd bass I missed there - 1st one was a '76 Sunburst Stingray with heaps of MOJO for $175.... Ouch.

I have been hiding out for many weeks now. I lost my job a couple of months ago and have been spending a lot of time trying to find employment again, but it is a frustrating effort.

I have been in a couple of hobby cover bands over the last few years, this current configuration has been stable for about a year. A couple of the members are very eager to perform out, but opportunities are not abundant. There are places that wants us to <i>pay them</i> in order to play at their venue. In spite of that we have played out a couple of times. We had a friend shoot videos of a performance we did back in February and I put up a few of them on youtube. One of the videos I put up is the band playing "Creep," and another happens to be a song by a group originally from New Zealand, and a third is an original written by the other guitarist. I am on the left on guitar as the so-called lead guitar.

I remember Berlin well from the 80s. I really liked their first album which had a very European sound but I was surprised to find out they were from Los Angeles. I have seen the band in concert a couple times and they were very good live. Earlier this week you brought up the song "Train Kept a Rolling," and you mentioned the Yardbirds so I have to link to this video from the movie "Blowup":
