Lunch Report: 2012-06-18

Since it's 4am my time and my lunch report would be late late late, I'm entering it now.

Yesterday dinner:
My wife made me bierocks. They (and she) rule. Ground beef, cabbage, pepper, and roll bread dough. That simple. That awesome.

SB/SC mania! I've owned an SB-2 I bought from GregG a bit over a decade now. Here's my exact bass:

This CP Thornton Legend Special is definitely my favorite. I like everything about it - the tone, the neck, the workmanship - everything. Really an incredible guitar, and I feel fortunate to own it.

God damn it Ches - you and Jay posting pics of those CP Thornton guitars hurts, they're beautiful! That'd probably be my favourite instrument too if I had one.

when I was a little kid, my parents forced me to take 4 years of accordian lessons. I really, really hated the accordian.

Now, I would really like one to noodle around with!

My favorite musical instrument is the guitar and I own plenty of them. But as a kid I always wanted a drum kit and no, I still don't have one.

Today my fave is an avocado green student rhodes, I need to go note by note and adjust the sustain bars/tines and pickup distance. There's a pickup for each key and two screws that move and dampen/undampen vibrations.
It's amazing how much the instruments character can change with just a few (well ...more like 219... [73 * 3]) turns
of a screw. I've got the bass notes 'barking' pretty well and the upper register is smoother .
Running with some echo and envelope filter on the aux sends of the mixer is giving me a nice spacy soulful
lounge sound.

Hammonds are amazing contraptions.

And ya gotta love BIG pipe organs...there's not enough of those around.

Thanks for grabbing the reins, Brock. Wow, one of the greatest basses EVER!! I like everything about the SC series.

A close second to guitar is the saxaphone. They add something special to almost any kind of band - jazz, blues, rock. And even ole Boots Randolph had a great run with his sax in country music back in the 60's & 70's. One of the best concerts I ever went to, Boots teamed up with Chet Adkins for a duet called "Yakkity Sax & Yakkity Axe". Brought the house down. So, it is one special instrument in my book, but I've never done anything about trying to learn to play one. A guitar just seemed more portable, more widely accepted, and more quiet when played in the house. I also was able to learn 2 songs on a guitar in less time than I could get the reed working on a sax. Little did I know that 50 years later, I'd still be trying to learn my 3d song on guitar! LOL!!

Fave all time guitar is the same as Ches's fave: my Cp Thornton Legend Special. Best sonic range, most comfortable, nicest touch, best neck, finest construction, beauty to the core, most ergonomic design, best balance, & has good stage presence [not that I get on a stage often]. The only things it is NOT are that it is NOT anywhere near the most expensive guitar I've ever owned and it's not the most beautiful ever. It just looks, feels, plays, & sounds great. I love it so much that I've commissioned Chuck to build me another one with different pickups & with a rare quilted mahogany top. Due in August.

I've sold damn near everything else to pay for my CpThornton GAS. Chuck builds a fantastic guitar, and I have ZERO desire to shop for anything new. Kind of a "yea/boo" situation! LOL! Here's my current trio, the Legend Special, a Fusion, and a flame maple capped Legend. All 3 are quite different but feel very familiar.


Walter Becker (Steely Dan) just bought a similar Legend, but it had a wrap around bridge. I think that's Chuck's first prominent artist, other than Jay.

As for the organ . . . this one isn't a B-3, but the Leslie is on the other side of the room just whirring away! I took lessons for years as a kid. I wish I had kept at it.

Yes!! I have a couple fretless (L2000 and modulus j-bass) in mind for making some drums/rhodes/fretless/guitar
tracks to consecrate the new studio space.
I'm just rising from a nap and my crossed eyes at first saw "Rhodes, fretless electric bass, steel drums and guitar" ...I was trying to hear the steel drums in the mix as my eyes came to focus ...LOL .

I haven't posted any gratuitous SC/SB porn in a couple of weeks, so here it goes:











The SC-1 and SC-2 are both from 1982, in their original cases. For those who haven't seen an SC case in person, their slightly narrower width really stands out, as do their square corners. I don't know the production dates for the SB-1, but as several folks pointed out the last time I posted this picture it may be the prototype. I'm hoping to learn how it was listed in the production logs.

It's hard to pick a favorite instrument. If we're talking a specific piece of wood, metal and wires, it would probably be this SC-1. My favorite type of instrument would have to be the string bass. Mine is nothing special - just a plywood Czech-built student model - but it's my link to all of the wonderful tones and drones that I can hear in my head but not quite translate to my fingers:



I'm eternally grateful that my G&L GAS doesn't carry over to the string bass.

The only SB/SC gear I have is this flamey neck.





It lived with the old L-1000 body (marked for ebay ,unloaded) for a while...now it awaits
a homemade Korina body that might be finished before the end of the universe.

I do not have a SB but an L-2500 and after owning several bases this one is the best I have had so far. I also have a new SC-2 which is also one of my favorites.

I have many favorites but one of my very favorites in the Hamer Newport. It is extremely resonant unplugged.-- Darwin
