Hi gang,

Thanks to all of you who participated yesterday, or at any other time this week for that matter. Although being slammed and having little time, this one turned out to be not too problematic. What remains is today's LR (easy) and the nomination for next week's LR (more complicated). So lets get that out of the way first.

Since I haven't had much time to seek out anybody, I obtained the 'winner' in the best way I could think off: completely at random. We'll just see where the chips may fall. Given that we all went to Buckley's yesterday, today for sure it will be Bambino's. Usually Friday's lunches involve an extended group of current and former colleagues. Beer and food will be consumed, conversations will be had, great laughter will ensue. It is one of these moments I always look forward too.

G&L related
Featured on this last day of the week is the Commemorative I obtained from Josey Wales (Gary Maki) a couple of months ago. I must admit that my Commemoratives are about the only models I do not really play although each absolutely sounds great. This one has a maple fingerboard.




There is something very interesting about this guitar. After production started in October '91, before the end of the year 28 Commemoratives were built including 6 of the 7 Lacewood Commemoratives. This one has S/N #29 and hence one would expect that this was the first one built in '92. But you would be wrong. As evidenced by the date stamps, this Commemorative turns out to be one of the last ever built just before production halted in May '93. Go figure

Doing anything cool for the weekend?
For me, it will be enjoying the new deck and finally getting around to comparing some Blues Boys of different body woods (alder Blues Boy Contour #9, alder BB with maple top, Korina Collection BB, ash semi-hollow BB, and the hog BB featured yesterday). So enough choices, just want to see if there are any sonic differences. And last but not least, my wife and I will see the Tedeschi-Trucks Band tonight at the Paramount Theatre and Bill Frisell and his band playing John Lennon songs at Jazz Alley tomorrow. My, oh my …

Doing anything cool for the weekend?

I have no idea. A quick band practice tonight, which will have me tearing up my fingers on the upright. Tomorrow I will make my first foray into Craigslist selling, as I try to move a refrigerator and dishwasher out of my garage. One of the mornings I will try to drag my son out of bed early for some kayaking on the Severn River.

I enjoyed it alright, just like I think you enjoyed all of my SC-1 raves a couple of months ago. I have to admit you opened my eyes to the beauty of newer G&Ls, and whet my appetite for ASATs. NGDs to follow in about two weeks...

Jos - - what a stellar week and that trio is just amazing. I know that Greg G. speaks very highly of the triple bound ASAT's that led to the Commemorative, so I can imagine they must sound sweet. You have quite the collection and it's good to know that some folks are carrying the torch and amassing collections that do justice to the goodness that was and is Leo Fender, and has in many respects carried over to the BBE-era. Great stuff!

And last but not least, my wife and I will see the Tedeschi-Trucks Band tonight at the Paramount Theatre and Bill Frisell and his band playing John Lennon songs at Jazz Alley tomorrow. My, oh my …

Brock and Ken,

Entirely my pleasure. You can read accolades about a certain instrument but in the end it is only when you experience it yourself when you can figure out whether all the hoopla is warranted. With the SC's, I have found that it is true even beyond the initial expectations I had set.

And yes, BBE-owned G&L still builds good stuff. Beyond the hogs we talked about yesterday, if you ever come across a C.L.F. Centennial you owe it to yourself to play it. That is one of the best instruments (or at least mine) that has ever left the Fullerton factory.

Howdy Jamie,

Mr Trucks was in fine form yesterday evening as were the pipes of Mrs Tedeschi. The outstanding band played a 2 hour set highlighted by Midnight in Harlem (with an extended solo by Derek and the best version I have heard), a rollicking version of Rollin' and Tumblin', soulful rendition of Uptight, and boisterous rendition of Learn How To Love. And Susan Tedeschi can play a mean, and I mean mean as evidenced on the 2 soli she took yesterday on That Did It and Love Has Something Else To Say.

I'll let you know about Bill Frisell tomorrow.

Loved the posts this week & especially the pics. Had not seen one of the Commemoratives in a while. What a beautiful, beautiful guitar. I came SO close to owning one. Tim Page had one that he alerted me to & I just couldn't react in time. It was a good price, but pricey enough to require some selling on my part. And, as expected, it didn't last on the market long. They are about the tastiest looking thing to ever roll out the Fullerton doors.

I did see Dale Hyatt's lacewood Commemorative & it was indescribably wonderful to behold. Mercy!!!!

Here's part II. Bill Frisell was absolutely amazing! See the show if you can or at least buy the CD. Bill's take on the songs is fresh. He seems to be able to deconstruct tunes in ways you would have never thought. Since moving from New York to the Pacific Northwest, he has had a trio with Tony Scherr on bass and Kenny Wollesen on drums. This trio was augmented for this set with the amazing Greg Leisz on (pedal) steel guitar. Every time I have seen Bill play with Greg, wonderful things happen. Unfortunately, violinist Jenny Scheinman, who plays on the album, was missing tonight. Nevertheless, one could hear wonderful renditions of (I might have forgotten one or two) 'Across The Universe', 'Number 9 Dream', 'Please, Please Me', 'In My Life', 'Julia', 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away', and 'Come Together'.

What an evening!

Thanks for the follow up, Jos. Believe me, if Bill ever comes out to Australia I'll be there. I love the pedal steel in a jazz context. For now the CDs will have to do, but seeing jazz is much more involving if you're in the crowd. Glad you enjoyed yourself
