Help Locating ASAT Photos? **Found Them Now An A/B**

This is driving me crazy.

I have been trying to locate a thread that contained some pictures of a member's guitars. I think there were four total and they were all ASATs. One has a very nice grain in the maple cap that the member originally thought could be spalted maple but it probably was actually a pronounced non-spalted maple grain. The member is in Northern Europe, maybe the Netherlands. The guitars were uncommon and each was quite beautiful. The photos were high quality as well.

Anyone recognize who I am thinking of and know where that thread is?

those are beautiful guitars indeed. i think that bluesboy is just a swamp ash with unique grain pattern.

Definitely B. I've never personally seen birds-eye figure in ash, but I imagine it must exist. I have seen curly ash (same wavy figure as curly/tiger/flame maple), and ash burl (a defect that gives a very unstable undulating figure). Ash isn't always the straight, clear grain we're used to seeing on guitars.

i agree it is more like b. birdseye exists in most woods, it is a defect. more common in maple.

It's good to investigate this. I always wondered what top it was, because you don't see them like this very much.
Looking at the examples of Michael, it looks like ash, and that's what I assumed originally. Well, whatever it is, it's still my favorite G&L.

as i said, it looks more like b. what is a? ash? the examples don't show anything similar.

"A" has to be maple. As for "B", oak and ash can have very similar appearances depending on the species.

Maybe the gray text does not show up as well on other monitors. B is Ash.

I was joking about the oak because the grain is similar.



Based on certain aspects I was thinking it was probably maple.

Most ash is straighter grained with distinct dashed patterns and the grain shapes usually have a diamond characteristic to the form.

Maple has a smokey pattern to it like the soft lines of smoke coming off the tip of a cigarette:





I also see "eyes" in this guitar similar to the eyes of birdseye maple.

Yet the lower portion of this Ash guitar is softer and more smokey like birdseye maple:



And then there is this wild pattern (Ash):

Different grain patterns can be from different cuts and positions in the log, as well as age of the tree.

I love all these different grain patterns - that's what I was saying in the "body wood cuts" thread - G&L ought to promote all this wild wood - it makes guitars that are as individual as can be, and it appeals to artists (musical), and it doesn't really change anything at the production line or cost them any more to make the guitar! Bonus for both sides!
