NGD - G&L Legacy

hi,
after some searching, i managed to find a G&L Legacy at a local shop not too far from home. tried it out and liked it. although new, it had surely been there for a while because the frets were a little opaque but i put new strings on it after fingerboard and fret cleaning and it’s fine. sounds really nice. i never played a strat-type guitar and i must say, the feel and single coil sound is soooo satisfying.

i was honestly looking for a more recent model, maybe a fullerton, with a 9.5 radius but they had this one which i think is a 12”, but it felt good so i went with it.

i am posting some pics because other than the documents shown and the serial number, i don’t really know the year. i think maybe 2011. can anyone help dating it? i will try contacting HQ just out of curiosity.

build quality is great. compared to my LP jr tribute dc, a definite step up. i'm sorry if the pics don't show up. admin, please let me now if i have to modify this post.

Based on the serial numbers around it in the registry, it looks like it is from 2004.

just a little history: i am new to guitar playing. right now just learning very simple basic stuff, so buying a guitar was a little intimidating. i decided to go to a local shop rather than buy online mainly because i felt it was better to help out a small family run business that because of the covid lockdown surely had taken a hit. so after contacting the distributor and finding this place i went and bought. i was told it was an ash body and that date-wise it was around a 2011. so like i said, i don't have a lot of experience with guitars but i wanted to venture into G&L territory. figured i would end up with what a "modern" Legacy has going on now: 9.5" radius, neck profile, etc.

but since i was taken by the sound and general feel (which is fine btw), i made somewhat of an impulse buy. i think the saleperson was pretty sly, although i understand, just doing his job. i think that is why the spec sheet "couldn't be found".

so i am overall happy with the guitar and will definitely make it work and all, but i am sure it wouldn't have happened had i ordered from an international online shop, and could have returned it for whatever reason.

so lesson learned. no more "mr. nice guy" towards these brick and mortar businesses that, as they say here in italy "caress you with one hand, and slap you with the other", just to get a sale and you out the door. it's a new world for us consumers and for them too, so the way they choose to conduct business will define whether they sink or swim, but enough of the complaining about how hard it is. if they do things the right way, in the end they'll manage, if they don't it's no one else's fault but their own.

Alder is the standard body wood for Standard finishes for the Legacy. 3-Tone Sunburst is a Standard finish.
Take off the trem back plate or remove the output jack cover and look for unfinished wood. If the unfinished wood has a red tint to it, it is
Alder. If the unfinished wood is light colored then it is Swamp Ash. Here are some examples of Alder and Swamp Ash unfinished bodies:


As mentioned before, see the Serial number significance post, and you will find this:

In February 2011, serial numbering was updated to CLFXXXXXX and the serial number applied onto
a metal plate in place of the waterslide decal on the back of the headstock.
This was started with serial number CLF061000 and numbering was issued in sequence. In addition, the factory includes
a "Custom Build Specifications" sheet for each instrument.

So, your guitar was built earlier than 2011 and will not come with the build specifications sheet. And as member Challenger said:

poduction date is July 30th 2004, it has a 1-5/8 nut width and a 12" radius, the body wood is alder. the pickups are the CLF100 Alnicos made in Fullerton Ca. USA. The neck is rosewood, the profile is a classic C.

One clarification: the neck is Maple with a Rosewood fingerboard.
