Post NGD - 1993 ASAT (Pics!)
I lucked into this great G&L ASAT (or ASAT Special) and it may be the nicest G&L I've ever owned. I am assuming that it is an ASAT rather than a Special because of the black hardware - however I've heard of guitars with black hardware and brushed chrome tuners sometimes called "Specials." I'm reasonably sure the body is alder from the appearance. 1 5/8" nut, 7.25" radius (yay!) - it is a dream to play. And the sound of the pickups is to die for! I will enter it into the registry shortly. Thanks to Blues Angel Music in Pensacola, FL for another great guitar!

Thanks - I feel very fortunate to have snagged this one. The three bolt G&Ls have always been my favorites and this one is really special. I don't think the previous owner played it very often - there is virtually zero fret wear. The neck is dead straight (if you want it to be - I prefer just a bit of relief) and the electronics are clean and noise free. The guitar makes no (unintended) noise going into my Princeton Reverb. So I am a very happy camper.

Stunning beauty you have there Ken! Love the black Saddlelock and the control plate. Wish G&L would bring back the black hardware! And as others said, large MFDs are special. Enjoy!

Cheers, Dan

I'm a sucker for ASATs to begin with but that's a great looking guitar. Congratulations.

Looking at the neck and neck pocket photo i would say that the body wood is likely Maple. If it were Alder, the raw wood showing in the neck pocket would
not be same color as the neck heel. Alder wood has a red color to it.

Just my $0.02.

Very nice ASAT you got!

Correction on the color of raw Alder wood. It has red color to it, not yellow.

Thanks, Craig. This is, of course, the guitar I posted about in my "serial number with an A" thread. Interesting that it is a maple body - is that a "premium feature" or just what this particular guitar is made of?" No weight penalty by the way - the guitar weighs just 7.7 - 7.8 lbs.

It is a real beauty in person - and it sounds heavenly.

regards
Ken

Good score. I wish they'd bring back the black hardware.
Love the ASAT Special.
It's confusing that the earlier models were simply ASATs. Why did they change the name and was it before or after Leo died?

In 1992, the ASAT Special was added to the catalog along with the ASAT. See: Production List of G&L Instruments (USA) and List of Regular Production ASAT-style guitars (USA).

Here's 1992-93 Catalog Page 2:

Hope this helps.

That's almost more confusing. :P
So the only difference between the ASAT and ASAT special was body wood and the black hardware?

Yes, but wait... I recently found out that in the 10-1-94 G&L Price List that the ASAT was renamed ASAT Standard.

And, then to add a bit more confusion: in the 1996-97 G&L Catalog. the Model names were accidently swap: :o
Image

But, the 1997 Retail Price List had them listed correctly, so atleast the G&L Dealer's had the correct information:

Definitely a bit confusing. Also, the ASAT special is listed at a higher price than the standard ASAT.
Chrome hardware is more expensive? "Better" body wood maybe?

I wish they'd bring back the black hardware, also some of those cool old finishes they used to do in the 90s like the swirl finishes. Yummy.

Anyhow, I don't want to derail the thread. ASATs are awesome. OP got a sexy one.
Enjoy in good health!

I too used to wish for a return of the black hardware. Now I think it's just one more feature that sets the old G&L's apart and adds to their mystic if you will.

Great guitar!

Pretty similar to my 1994 ASAT, except mine is in Cherry Sunburst.
Mine got a middle pickup modified by a previous owner and I always thought that pickguard would have been metal too originally, as it is on my 1985 S-500. Now I know better. :)
