No NAMM appearance?

Post by Nubs »

I haven't seen anything about G&L being at NAMM this year. Anyone else hear anything?

I kept searching NAMM 2016 G&L and didn't get any hits.

Better question, is there anything new planned for G&L USA for 2016?

I also read previously that they were also considering an overhaul redesign of some of the Tribute models.

G&L, again this year did not host a booth, just like last year, see: Is G&L At NAMM.
And liike last year, G&L hosted tours and visits at the factory for dealers and dealer reps only.
BTW, G&L is only a few miles away from the Anaheim Convention Center.

For anyone who visited the factory during NAMM, was there any mention of new 2016 USA models?

I don't see why many even bother with NAMM. It's an industry only event, so it's not like customers and end users are going to be all over the place. It's almost more to show off to the rest of the industry and make connections.

While it's relatively easy for non-members to get into NAMM if they really wanted to, the show is for manufacturers to showcase their products to music retailers and distributors from all over the world so they can make large numbers of sales to many people who each have direct contact/relationships with large numbers of consumers.

Brief rant:
Having worked NAMM for the last 8 years, I almost applaud G&L for being a no-show.
NAMM is fiilled with "Guests" , "Artists" and many V (for "Visitor") badges, and in my experience, they sometimes outnumber the real Buyers, who do their business on Thursday/Friday, and leave Saturday and Sunday for the "masses", who can make it hard to get to the restroom!

Not that it isn't all in good fun and all, but after hearing "How much is that strap?" a gazillion times, it gets tiring when the objective is to pick-up distirbutors and retailers, not do retail sales, which is almost (except for special arrangement) not allowed anyway!

And even with all the great & new gear on dispay, just try & play some amidst the din of hundreds. eventhousands of shredders of all types. There are some good moments of course- I've heard Jeff Berlin, Marcus Miller, etc play, and there are live performances each day.

But NAMM (IMO) primarliy benefits NAMM- In today's marketplace, a Manufacturer can show his goods to potential & existing customers by means other than traipsing to Anaheim and paying the exorbitant rates for a booth, and maintenance, etc.
One motivation for attendees from out-of-state is the weather. It always seems to hit 70 degrees in Disneyland when the East coast is sub-Zero. And in all my years there, it only rained, lightly, briefly-once!

Mesa, e.g quit displaying at NAMM among others, and the G&L/BBE booth was pretty low-key anyway. A highlight for me a few years back was seeing the CLF L2k when introduced, and then getting mine about 6 months later!

Also, G&L sells pretty much everything they build, probably built to order, so they don't feel the need to put on Halloween costumes and offer catered food as does EBMM (fun, though!) or keep a stiff upper lip, like Rickenbacker does (-:

Anyway- my .02.
G&L products, for those who know, need no hullabaloo to get off the ground.

NAMM is a 501(c)(6) organization, so the benefit is to the employees and artists working the show. I agree with everything else you say, particularly that spending thousands a day for a tiny booth and enduring the circus that is NAMM seems rather unnecessary in this age.

YEARS ago, NAMM was an Industry-only type exhibition, where the attendees & exhibitors wore suits & ties, and sat down to wrote stocking orders for the gear introduced. Those were the old days.
Although that is still the concept, it has become a circus & celebration, wherein all types of wanna-be Industry-types & performers wangle their way in, with no intent or means of buying, just there to hang out & shred the new gear, lining up to meet Rock-stars, and gazing at the Dean girls, etc.

I get it, it's fun!...

Different e4xperience though when you are contained in a booth (ours is even fairly large; mid-size Hall C), there to do business, not have a wing-ding!
I'm across from Mfr's booth where there is shredding galore and believe me, by Saturday/Sunday- ENOUGH! You can't hear a **&^% thing anyway, even with the decibel-police patrols!!

We wanted to vacuum our booth, and we were told we can't; it costs $150 for the Convention Center's staff ONLY to do so;
that's a Union thang..

$10 pretzels, $5 Cokes, no place left to sit & eat your $12 taco combo- I'll pass, as I have this year & last, much like G&L!

I call my Customers, both those who go to NAMM & the increasing numbers that do not, & write business anyway!

I'm not bitter, it is what it is- But I can't help but chuckle when I read posts of those who yearn to get into NAMM to PARTTT-Y! 8-)
