G&L Pickguard Replacement Options

Ok so I've been looking to replace my standard pick guard with a black one. Unfortunately it's proving to be much more difficult than I originally anticipated.

I first tried getting one off the G&L store. What I thought was the right pick guard for my guitar turns out it isn't. I apparently ordered a guard for the ASAT Custom, not the ASAT Classic. So I'm still waiting back from them so I can return it. I didn't even open the package.

I next tried hitting up Chandler Music as suggested. They are asking me to file out a form and take the pick guard off to send it to them to make one. I have no idea how much it would cost or what the turnaround time is. But if they don't have them readily in stock, chances are it's going to be expensive and time consuming.

I also tried reaching out to this Greasy Groove place to see if they can help. I took the pick guard off, created an outline drawing for them, and sent the outline as well as numerous pics of the guard next to a ruler so they can get an idea of the scale. Bottom line is that they can do it, but it'll cost me because they don't readily make them either.

So am I S.O.L. in trying to get a black pick guard for my guitar that's reasonably priced? I really don't know where else to turn. I don't mind waiting a while to get it, but on the other hand I'm not interested in paying $100 for one.

As I mentioned before, the pickguard you ordered from the G&L On-Line Store was for an ASAT Classic Custom model, not an ASAT Custom [see Production List of G&L Instruments (USA)].

Try searching the forum using the Search link as I am pretty sure there are one or two more options.

I just ordered a couple of pickguards from Chandler a few weeks ago after putting it off for for a long time thinking it was going to be a hassle. All they needed from me was the number on the back of the pickguard so they knew which template to use, and which material I wanted and that was it. Looking at their ordering page a black pickguard for an ASAT Classic (exactly what I ordered, coincidentally) should be $27.

I have not received mine yet so can't comment on whether it fits or not, I'll check back in when it gets here.

I am working with Chandler on a custom guard, and as Blarg said, they are very helpful, and all you need is to match on the Pickguard Heaven guard guide.

I think everyone is forgetting something important. I'm a lefty. Pick guards and/or other parts don't come so easily to us.

First, I have already removed the pick guard which was surprisingly simple to do. I love the fact I didn't have to remove the strings to do it. Very cool!

Anyways, there is no number on the back of the guard. It's plain black with no markings at all. So I wound up sending them a tracing & measurements. Apparently that's not sufficient for them so they want me to mail them my pick guard so they can make their own. Not sure if I want to do that. Plus I have no idea what it will cost.

they have a price list ... you should be able to figure out what you want and what it cost's .... should be around or less than 60.00 regardless

Wouldn't the left guard be the same as a righty, but with the bevel and screw holes coming from the other side?

Not necessarily Ken. Some backsides of pick guards, especially the multiply, are unlike their fronts so it is not like you can just flip them around and redo the bevels. You really have to cut them as the mirror image of a righty.

Chandler does not supply the pickguards for the Tribute Series instruments, only for the USA models. The Tribute pickguards are sourced by the Indonesian factory
which builds the Tribute models. That's why there is no Chandler number on the back of your Tribute ASAT Classic pickguard.

One thing that you probably were not aware of is that the Tribute ASAT Classic neck pickup is located closer to the neck than the USA ASAT Classic's neck pickup.
See: asat classic pickguard and Difference in pickup position of the ASAT Classic vs Tribute. So, you definitely will need a custom made pickguard
for your Tribute Lefty ASAT Classic.

I suggest you contact the other pickguard resources I mentioned in my previous post and see if they will accept your tracing and measurements. You might also search the Internet
for custom pickguard suppliers, too.

Please keep us posted on which resource you end up using.
